Southampton - official Cardiff City supporters club for a day!
SAINTS Trust chairman Nick Illingsworth will be joining thousands of others in Southampton cheering on the Welsh tomorrow.
Illingsworth will be backing ex-Saints boss Dave Jones' Cardiff City in the FA Cup Final against bitter rivals Portsmouth, as a large part of Southampton, for one day, becomes an extension of the Welsh capital.
It will be a nerve-racking day for many Saints supporters, who will be hoping they don't have to endure wild scenes of celebration just a few miles down the M27.
Illingsworth expects there to be a great deal of support for the Welsh side tomorrow, even if that somewhat goes against the nature of being English.
"Football is all about local rivalries, be it Saints-Pompey, Liverpool-Manchester United, or Celtic-Rangers," he said.
"The fact of the matter is that most Saints supporters will be praying for a Cardiff win, that's the nature of football."
However, despite his support for the Bluebirds, Illingsworth admits there are some Pompey fans who he feels deserve their success.
He is not expecting that to matter to the vast majority of Saints fans, though.
"We must remember that, although we don't like Pompey doing well, they more than anyone had to sit in the shadow of their local rivals for some 50 years.
"They had to do that without ever really being above us in terms of league position, attendances or anything.
"There are supporters there who are genuine football fans, who love their club and have stuck by it.
"Half of me says, for those loyal fans who were going when there were only about 8,000 people watching them, that they deserve it.
"But the other half of me hopes they get beaten.
"The nature of football is you want your local rivals to be beaten and you want them to be beaten well.
"But some of their fans do deserve it if they win.
"But if Cardiff City do win, I will celebrate like its 1999."

How sad. A grown man behaving like a 9 year old. Yes, we will all be fairly pleased should Cardiff win but we're not going to lose any sleep over it! For the Echo to actually print a story about it shows how low their journalism standards have shrunk.
Grow up.

Dear oh dear. There speaks the spokesperson of the Saints Trust. Is it any wonder the Trust is such a useless fans organisation?

Having read the words attributed to Nick Illingsworth, I can now understand why the vast majority of Saint's fans do not take him seriously.
Illingsworth says he will be backing Dave Jones, the former Saints manager!
Where was his support when Jones was being sidelined by the club, and needed all the support he could get?
With each quote about how long Pompey were supposed to be in Saint's shaddow, the period is increased. Now he claims it to be half a century! If Nick was Pinochio, his nose would reach Pompey by now!
Although Pompey were formed after Saints, they reached football's top flight, while Saints were still in Div 3(S), won the cup while they were there and also back to back Div 1 Championships.
History is great, but it is the present that counts, and if Nick and his followers had been united in their support of Saints, instead of causing so much in-fighting amongst Saints fans, maybe, just maybe, Southampton would still have Premier League football at St Mary's instead of languishing near the bottom of the Championship, narrowly avoiding relegation.
As far as his support for Cardiff City is concerned, if he does as good a job for them as he has done for Southampton FC, then I think that Dave Jones will think that Nick has offered him a poisoned chalice!
Personally, I hope that Southampton have turned the corner, and will soon be pushing for a Premier League place.
Why? Because I am a Hampshire sportsman, who wants what is best for the county that Nick and I live in, and do not want to see top flight football concentrated in London and up North!

To be honest I'm just glad its not another all big 4 clash, if I have to sit thru another 1-0 glamour final i may stop watching football altogether.
It will be nice to see a final where it may well be the only chance either teams get of a 'big' success, maybe we will see some passion.

My Wife is a Swansea girl and her dislike of Cardiff ranks as high as my dislike of Portsmouth. She is a keen Saints fan and has recently shown a lot of interest in Bristol City who also dislike Cardiff. She therefore has no liking for either finalist. Therefore there will be no telly, radio or newspapers at Schooner House this weekend. I of course will be quietly cheering on the bluebirds.

I am really pleased we stayed up, that is the most important thing for a saints fan, not whether Pompey lose the cup. In fact I would be pleased if Pompey won then we both have reasons to enjoy the summer break, watching HAMPSHIRE play cricket at the Rose Bowl! (PS. What a crap article - you should be ashamed echo, but then I wouldn't expect anything less!)

What a sad state of affairs, when The Echo can't find a person more representative of the Saints fans than Illingsworth.
It is such a shame that his mentality had not matured at the same rate as his body!
It would be interesting to know how many people that feel he is their representative on Southampton FC matters!

Well said mush, although I'm a staunch Saints supporter and have certain views regarding PFC I agree about keeping it local. Over the years, even when both of us ("unfashionable teams" as they were often labelled) were in the top flight we have been basically ignored in favour for the "big clubs" in the Capital and 'oop North, that was even the case when it came to County Cricket.
When I was just a little boy I wanted all local clubs to well, during my late teens to early 30's that changed to an aggressive hatred for PFC, but now in my forties I've grown-up and mellowed and prefer the banter, which is how it should be and although I obviously want Saints to be more successful than Pompey (I would love us both to be in the Prem, I miss the derbies)I am split on who I want to win on Saturday. If PFC win, it raises the profile of Hampshire and keeps the Cup in England, if Cardiff win, it means we wont be bombarded with PFC fans posting on this site (IN CAPITAL LETTERS) gloating over the victory for years to come!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, on a slightly related matter, do you recognise many of the following names, they are from the Pompey line-up back on Saturday 22nd Jan 1972 in a Div 2 match versus - coincidentally - Cardiff City at Fratton Park (so tempted to write Nottarf Krap but I wont).
John Milkins, Fred Smith, John Collins, Bill Wilson, Eoin Hand, Colin Blant, Norman Piper, Dick Reynolds, Mike Trebilcock, (insert possible joke about surname here) George Ley, Nick Jennings, Albert McCann. Mr. R. Tindall was the manager. The City manager was a certain - MR JIMMY SCOULAR
I went to the match to watch Pompey play (I was only 10 at the time so I didn’t know any better at that age) with a family friend who was a City fan and who was also a Train Driver - so I suppose the real attraction was I that could travel there and back in the front of the Train!
I have the matchday programme in front of me, it cost 5p and it was called the POMPEY JOURNAL, I cant remember what the score was though, got a feeling it was 1 - 0, but not sure who to.
Got a feeling its going to be a 1 - 0 job on Saturday but once again not sure who to!
Good luck - I think!!!
C'mon City!
Its **** uncomfortable sitting here on the fence!

The City manager was a certain - MR JIMMY SCOULAR I went to the match to watch Pompey play (I was only 10 at the time so I didn’t know any better at that age) with a family friend who was a City fan and who was also a Train Driver - so I suppose the real attraction was I that could travel there and back in the front of the Train!

My sporting order of priorities is:
Portsmouth FC, my team.
Hampshire, my county,
England, my country and
Unite Kingdom teams, because they are part of 'an extended family'!
I didn't see the game you mentioned, because I was not in the country at the time, but well remember the late Jimmy Scoular, a formidable right half, renowned for his 'jousts' with Peter Doherty!
As you remember a Pompey team, my first outing to The Dell was to see them v QPR when a certain Joe Mallett played for QPR and later joined Saints.
I remember George Ephgrave, claimed to be the tallest goalkeeper in the league, Alf Ramsey, Bill Rochford, Eric Webber, Don Roper and other names that escape me now - somehow I don't think that the late, great Ted Bates featured in that match.
Anyway, enough or the ramblings of an old phart!
Keep up the banter! Get Saints fans to unite behind the Chairman, whether they love him or loathe him, because it will need a united effort to get Saints back on track!
Good Luck!

Having read the words attributed to Nick Illingsworth, I can now understand why the vast majority of Saint\'s fans do not take him seriously. Illingsworth says he will be backing Dave Jones, the former Saints manager! Where was his support when Jones was being sidelined by the club, and needed all the support he could get? With each quote about how long Pompey were supposed to be in Saint\'s shaddow, the period is increased. Now he claims it to be half a century! If Nick was Pinochio, his nose would reach Pompey by now! Although Pompey were formed after Saints, they reached football\'s top flight, while Saints were still in Div 3(S), won the cup while they were there and also back to back Div 1 Championships. History is great, but it is the present that counts, and if Nick and his followers had been united in their support of Saints, instead of causing so much in-fighting amongst Saints fans, maybe, just maybe, Southampton would still have Premier League football at St Mary\'s instead of languishing near the bottom of the Championship, narrowly avoiding relegation. [/quote] Sailor Sam is spot on. I'm a die hard ( bored stiff) saints fan - But I'd rather the glory go to Pompey tomorrow because they are Hampshire team and I don't care about all the rivalry stuff. Good healthy banter is good - just slagging everybody off does nothing for the reputation of the fans, good of the game or the perception of the game when viewed from foriegn climes. All the best for tomorrow

When you are mature, you will appreciate that you have more in common with supporters of another football club than things that divide you.
That is why, as a mature Pompey supporter, I can wish a mature Saints supporter, all the very best for the coming season because, having suffered problems supporting Pompey for decades, I can appreciate how he feels with the problems his club now faces!
There comes a time, and you may reach it in years to come, when you reasise that giving opposing fans a load of 'yah boo' is rather juvenile!
I note that you did not give your location, so assume you live in Cardiff!

Who cares?, United devalued it several years ago.
No big teams want to win it any more. The league cup or whatever Spurs won is on the same level.
The only people who gain are the ones flogging merchandise.
Who is changing shirts , that's worth the most tomorrow.

There's alot of senseless drivel on this forum.I certainly think that some of the Pompey fans would be better supporting their club than posting on here judging by Redknapps recent comments on MOTD about the poor level of support that the team has received.Stop trying to frustrate on here and get behind your team, even your manager thinks you're not doing enough, PROVE HIM WRONG!You have a chance tomorrow of reaching a dizzy new height- failure will mean a mediocre season. Nevermind what our club is doing, be wary of WHAT MAY HAPPEN TO YOURS!All the blue fans thinks a win is a forgone conclusion, it isn't, YOU'RE OUT OF FORM!However,i offer good luck tomorrow.
SOUTHAMPTON FC-THE LAST TEAM ON THE SOUTH COAST TO PLAY EUROPEAN FOOTBALL. tongue firmly in cheek maybe, but will it change tomorrow.........

So so jealous.. You scummers are hilarious!
Fa cup winners this year, UEFA cup winners and Champions League qualifiers next season. Barcelona, Read Madrid et al at Fratton for the 2009/10 season... Just think you'll be out of business by then!
Play up Pompey! When Sol goes up to lift the FA cup we'll be there, we'll be there!

Nice one Rocket. The sort of intellectual response I'd expect from a council estate resident like you.
We've got James, you've got Kelvin Davis, we've got Defoe, you've got Stern John,
We've got Campbell, you've got Darren Powell,
We've got Muntari, you've got Viafara!!
We've got Kranjcar, you've got Surman..
Laughable!
Losers! At least you won't have to worry about trying to get Wembley tickets anymore.
Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be, Pompey are going to Wembley (again). Que Sera, sera.

Wonder how many skates will be on here at a,2pm tomorrow because none of you are actually going you just talk the talk and b, sunday morning when you get out of your mum and realise portsmouth lost.
Can't be pleasant when even the manager publicly says the portsmouth fans support is horrific.FACT. You want to try going to a home game kid..........
