Our heritage sites are under threat

BEAUTIFUL arches, historic chapels and old wreck sites are just a few examples of Hampshire heritage that is at risk, according to a new report.

It claims that 18 sites around Southampton, Winchester, the New Forest and the Isle of Wight are under threat.

The medieval Tudor House Museum in Southampton, Merdon Castle in Hursley and Golden Hill Fort on the Isle of Wight are just a few of the buildings that may be in jeopardy according to the Heritage at Risk report by English Heritage.

Two of the buildings in most danger are Fort Fareham in Fareham and the remains of the Old Quarry Abbey on the Isle of Wight.

Both of these Grade 2 listed buildings are at "immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric", the report says.

It is not just on land Hampshire's heritage is under threat but under the eastern Solent site where the sunken submarine A1 lies the report cited "extensive significant problems".

English Heritage chairman Lord Bruce-Lockhart said: "The results of our first Heritage at Risk report show that everybody must live near, walk past or know of a heritage treasure at risk near them.

"We hope that our Heritage at Risk register will galvanise the nation into action before it is too late and help us save the best of the past for the future."

He blamed ploughing, scrub and tree growth, lack of funds, neglectful owners, burrowing animals, inappropriate development, vandalism and natural erosion for the problems.

Hampshire County Council's Cabinet member for heritage, Cllr Margaret Snaith, said: "It is vital that we do all in our power to preserve these sites, it is what the people of Hampshire expect and deserve.

"We have some real treasures across the county and I think it is one of the things the people appreciate about the area."

Fort Fareham? Bit late to worry about it now - it's an industrial estate!

It's a good job nobody has sent any money on the Tudor House Museum recently.

Enough of the joking - most of us want to stay as we are - the whole of Southampton is OUR TOWN/CITY and systamatatically is being dismantled. Firms are being removed abroad; land literally, as with Scotland, land sacked and left thousands to die. Alright, this is not us at the moment - but this could happen with the whole of the British Isles sold to overseas. I cannot believe that outsiders are putting up prefab structures, - yes, they look all glittering and shiny but will never replace the historic buildings of yesteryear. I still cannot get my head around at the sell-off of our historic buildings - how can we allow this to happen to Southampton? but then this is the creeping invasion of our shores - romatic impressions but this is what is happening.
