Headliners, Theatre Royal Winchester

IT was a fitting tribute to 120 years of news in Hampshire.

Seventy talented youngsters from 2Groove took to the stage at the Theatre Royal Winchester yesterday for Headliners, a new show dedicated to the century and a bit of history of the Daily Echo through song and dance.

How well the cast, aged seven to 18, managed to distinctly depict each era, taking an appreciative audience through the decades in dance form.

There was a routine for everything from the Charleston in the roaring 20s to the swing and jitterbug of the 40s and from rock n roll in the 50s to hip hop for the new millennium.

My particular favourite was an ensemble piece of excellent jive to Rock Around the Clock. A dozen dancers were involved in the tough-to-time piece and did not put a foot wrong.

The delightful and colourful costumes really stood out and made the show, particularly the Star Spangled Banner outfits.

The few singing routines also went down well, particularly four lads taking centre stage with a medley of Beatles songs.

Yesterday's two shows, sponsored by Silks Hotels, owners of The White Horse in Romsey, definitely get a thumbs-up from me.

Full marks to Kim Smart and her talented troupe who showed not a hint of nerves and put on a fine show to continue our 120th birthday celebrations.
