FIRST performed in 1968 as a school production, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's ever-popular musical is now a summer season show at Bournemouth Pavilion.
Based on the Bible story, Joseph is his father's favourite and a bit of a dreamer. His eleven brothers resent him, especially the fancy coat Dad gives him, so they sell him off to merchants who take him to Egypt where he languishes in chains.
His recovery and return complete the parable.This lively production features three Saturday night TV favourites. Craig Chalmers and Antony Hansen from BBC's Any Dream Will Do play Joseph and Pharoah.
Tara Bethan from I'd Do Anything plays the Narrator with bounce and panache. The show opens with an over-long, seven-minute, pre-recorded overture, followed by the first of three renditions of the best number Any Dream Will Do.
Craig Chalmers is an engaging performer, but not every note rings true. Costumes and lighting are effective, as are the strong backing vocals plus a 40-piece kids' choir.
Unfortunately, there is no live band, and the samey, pre-recorded musical backing sometimes gives a cheap karaoke feel to the sound.

Unlike the truly great musicals like West Side Story with its compelling storyline, outstanding songs, electric dancing, and passionate drama, Joseph is light and at times limp.
Most of the numbers, like fast food, are enjoyable yet instantly forgettable, with a curious blend of Egyptian country and western, gospel and calypso.
The highlights are a Parisienne piece and an Elvis Pharoah complete with majorettes. A colourful family show, running until August 16.
