Poortvliet: We can learn from Le Tiss
Matt Le Tissier
Matt Le Tissier

JAN Poortvliet has invited Matt Le Tissier to train with his squad this week, so the players can learn from the Saints legend.

Le Tissier is due to join in Thursday's session at the club's Staplewood complex.

It will form part of the 39-year-old's preparation for his final St Mary's appearance on Friday, in Claus Lundekvam's testimonial against Celtic.

Le Tissier brought an end to his own 16-year career in 2002, but has been persuaded to put his boots back on for his good friend's farewell game.

Poortvliet revealed he jumped at the chance to get Le Tissier to take part in training ahead of the match.

He believes there are a number of areas, including set pieces, his young squad could learn from Le Tissier.

"I asked Claus to phone him and to get him to come here on Thursday to train with us," said the Saints head coach.

"Maybe the players can learn a lot from his set pieces and he can give them an example of everything.

"Matt was a great player and we can learn a lot from him and I am happy he will be there in the Friday game."

Poortvliet joked: "If Matt says sorry coach, I want to start' then maybe I have to start him, too!"

i'd rather Matt sat down with the likes of Dyer and BWP and explained about, behaviour off the pitch, loyalty, how to face adversity other than running away, desire and finally give something back rather than take all the time. the problem is they see ronaldo and lampard as role models.

I would offer Matt a part time coaching roll at the club.

If he did, perhaps the first Mrs LeTissier could sit in for the part covering Loyalty!

I'd hate Matt to have a role in the club at this time. And in recent times. He's a legend. Let's not tarnish the legend. There's politics and budgets (for good reason); things outside his control.

Yes, Chip Eater's idea is a great one. If the lads are smart enough to listen, they will benefit.

And Echo, let's sort out the "Lowe out" stuff.

Mr Lowe's plenty to prove in my book. But he's the boss.

It's going to be a very long and boring season if every time any one comes on your website, there is anti-Lowe material. Got the message. Many times.

If you don't Echo, I for one won't bother to visit your website.

I'm all for media freedom. But I don't purchase a newspaper everyday which says the same thing. Not even The Sun's Page 3 looks the same. Does she?

Let the anti-Lowe boys and girls put their hands in their pockets and pay for their own website where we can visit for their comments when we want to.

Philip, while I sympathise with your sentiments regarding the anti-Lowe material, because it is boring, repeditive and, for the most part, crudely misinformed - however, such a move would be regarded as censorship, and we do live in a free society (more or less).
That said, bringing Rupert up out of context should be resisted, and those that do it should bear in mind that mindless, irrelevant posts (and most of them are mindless and irrelevant at the very best) do nothing to advance their cause.
In short: do shut up, you're boring us to tears.
Finally: all page 3 Sun girls like Barbi dolls with implants to me. Okay if you're into plastic I suppose?

I'm all for media freedom too, so if you don't like the negative comments perhaps its you who should fund another website.

By your own standards it would also be a long and boring season if this became a Lowe fan site, learn to be more tolerant and ignore the comments you don't like!

On JP himself..how good is he?

We are in need of another center back to be on the safe side. I just wondering why has he not brought any up and coming players from the Dutch league. More so, an up and coming center back. Surely they would not cost too much and it just a thought. But dose this reflect on what little influence he has back in his home land? If not a center back, I would of thought he should know of a little gem or potential gem we could snare from Holland. For a Dutch guy it would be a dream move. It would be a home from home move playing and training, and playing in england to boot.

The club would need money for that! Also, not so sure that i would want to leave somewhere in Holland for the wonderful delights of chav infested Southampton. It's just a thought but how do we attract players to our club when the facilities of the city are potholes that are so deep that when it rains they count as lakes and West Quay?

Lets face it Eva, while I agree that LeTiss was easily the best player that Saints have had in many a year, he is about the only one that you could mention that you would include in a sentence that used the words talent, ability and quality. Your club's decline can be measured from the time he hung up his boots, regardless of who the manager or chairman was.
With regard the comments that Dave made, would you disagree that, in his later seasons at SFC, he was overweight?
Didn't you think that spending a lot of time with Mike Osman in that club was not an ideal training situation?
That, to my mind, is not slagging off LeTiss, but telling it like it is, or was.

All of the Pompey squad could lace up LeTissier's boots, but if he were to lose a couple of stone, he would be able to do it himself.
How many International caps did he get?
Is that more or less than David James?
Is it more or less than Sol Campbell?
Is it more or less than Jermaine Defoe?
Is it more or less than Peter Crouch?
Is it more or less than Glen Johnson?
Just a thought?
By the way, any chance of LeTiss coming to Fratton Park to practice lacing their boots?

How can we be expected to take you seriously Steve, when you can't even spell the place that you come from, correctly?
It is spelt E A S T L E I G H !
Your post is a mass of errors as well!
'THEIR new ground', 'I HEAR', 'be BUILT', 'RUBBISH'.
The fact that it is NOT planned to build Pompey's new stadium on a rubbish tip because, for one thing, you cannot build on reclaimed land for decades, but that will not prevent those who watch, what passes for football, on an old gasworks, from repeating the silly story.
As far as Pompey fans are concerned, you can call it what you like, because you are not likely to visit to watch your bunch in a league match, so will not have to give the name to a taxi driver.

True Blue, he was indeed out of shape in his later seasons but still a class act even then. as for being the only one, have you forgotten Bale, Walcott, Jones to name just the home grown players since the dreaded relegation. can you name three such players??
HOME GROWN????????
LeTissier came from Guernsey,
Bale had the strangest Southampton accent, seemed more Welsh to me.
Walcott seemed to have his roots in Newbury, and I have no idea where Jones came from.
I also note that Bale, Walcott and Jones are now just a memory at St Mary's and the money collected is just a memory as well.

By the way, any chance of LeTiss coming to Fratton Park to practice lacing their boots?

ok hang on.was reading all this with a smile on my face..then i read this. what a load of cack. lets face the truth.Le God would have more than likely got more caps if he played for a Man u or Arsenal or, as he very nearly did, a tottenham. Sadly at the time there was another chap called Gazza who was around who the fans loved which meant a starting place all the time. Now Le God wasnt the fittest and therefore missed out on this and the other reasons i gave. But the examples you gave are all of players who are only in the squad through lack of quality or injuries. Aside from David James (How old was he when you signed him?) the rest are all players that were in the england reserve set up. Johnson, only in because Neville was injured and Micah Richards. Defoe is and always will be a back up.Crouch only got better when he joined us. Campbell got virtually all his caps with spurs and arsenal. Home grown usually means bought up by the club by the way. how many players have been born in pompey and gone on to sucess? how many have been bought through the system and become leading players in the prem? i cannot think of any. i dont hate pompey though i am a passionate saints fan and i can appreciate that our time as the dominant south coast side has come to somewhat of an intermission. it just winds me up that pompey fans, not all, but some will bad mouth a legend by comparing there bought players, either reserves or retired from the england team, and say that they are better. They are not....full stop...

Saint Stephen you clearly are not much of a Saints fan.

Why is JP a clown? He has not really started. Give the man a chance

I can think of one but True Blue won't like it cos he's a scummer as well, Darren Anderton. True Blue won't ever admit he ever rated him though...just like all the other bottom feeders!

If when LeTiss was with us we were a crappy little pool then Pompey must have been gob on the street.
Just a thought John. I seem to recall that when LeTiss played for you, you were in the position that Pompey are now. Saints are now in the position that Pompey were then. So by your reckoning, Saints must now be \'the gob on the street\'! Enough to make you spit, isn\'t it!
sorry for the delay in replying I was trying to think of a player you lot had that was worthy of lacing Le God\'s boots............ nope couldn\'t think of one!!! jealousy is a strange thing that you lot never seem to recover from!

You are dreaming if you think any of these boys could even compare to Le Tissier, mate take a look at what you have wrote, you know which player you would take given the chance couple of stone or not. Enjoy it while it lasts, you must of been a true tw@t for at least 2 years now ah!

Good morning Minnie!
I would suggest that both you and I are biased in our opinions.
For an unbiased opinion, you have to accept what the England selectors think.
They thought that LeTissier was not up to the job, but think that the ones I mentioned are.
If I have been a true tw@t for a couple of years, then I suggest that, posting such nonsense, you have shown that you still are a tw@t, living in a country where they know precious little about football, so you should fit in quite nicely.

I'll like to add, can any poopey fan name a home grown player on theirs worthy of buying Le God a drink? Coz I am having the same problem as Saints4eva, can't think of one.
Having seen many posts of yours, it is obvious that you can't think of one because you are not used to thinking, and with the team you support, you are out of touch with Premier League footballers.

Darren slipped my mind, which is unforgivable because I have a photo of him, with Colin Clarke and Kit Symons, my wife and I, hanging in my house.
A very nice persons, a great talent who, but for injuries, would have gained more England caps.

Another intelligent post from someone who would probably claim to be a Saints supporter.

As it was posted at 1.34am my guess is that you got on your computer while your Mummy changed your bedding because you had wet the bed again.
While Pompey are going into Europe, you appear to be incontinent! Not quite the same thing.

AND FINALLY.

It looks as if Southampton are now going to lose their last link with the Premier League.

Portsmouth FC had their planning application for a new training ground and associated facilities, passed yesterday evenining.

It is expected that work will commence in a few weeks, and will be ready for pre-season training next season.

This means that Pompey will move from the SO area back to a PO area, meaning Southampton's links with the Premier League will be broken.
