New £7m superclub opens

THE new £7m superclub set to transform Southampton's nightlife opens its doors to the public for the first time tonight.

But Scene South was on hand to witness the glamorous VIP launch of Oceana last night.

Click here for a photo gallery from the VIP night at Oceana

The venue, which promises revellers a "world in one night" experience, is one of the biggest clubs in Europe with a capacity of 4,000.

Saints footballers, models and thousands of the city's partygoers danced the night away in the five bars, two nightclubs and swanky VIP area inside Leisure World.

Entertainment included stars of Britain's Got Talent Signature, a bongo band, ballerinas and Coyote Ugly-style dancers.

The venue's bars are based around cities and countries including Milan, Monte Carlo, Tahiti and Louisiana, while clubbers are transported to a 1970s New York Disco or cool Reykjavik Icehouse.

Sophisticated Milan or Monte Carlo make a great way to start the night with a cocktail while disco balls, mirrors, plastic helicopters and cheesy tunes make up New York.

Central Square - complete with raised stage for visiting acts - is the focal point of the ground floor and connects the four bars.

I went on the 'friends and family' night on Monday, and although I wasn't expecting much I thought it was a really nice place.

Shame that Jaks looks exactly the same (although a member of the bar staff told me it wasn't finished)

You can't take drinks out into the smoking terraces which was a bit annoying (you quickly get over it)

and shame there was a massive leak.

Apart from that it was well worth going. Just hope the clientelle improves from the old places.

Followed by 300 comments blaming students who "can't take their heavily-subsidised beer which I paid for by the way", some comments about Millbrook, Denzil somehow connecting the incident to Portsmouth, some pleas to force the entire world to drink out of paper cups for some reason, a barrage of complaints vaguely about bouncers, and some self-righteous housewives telling everyone off for "not being compassionate enough". *sigh*

Oh, and about 300 zillion exclaimation marks

I went last night and I must say it's amazing!!!!! Didn't see any trouble, the drinks were a little expensive but only what you would expect and the smoking area was easy to get to and no queues! All the different rooms were great, if you got bored of one all you had to do is go downstaires or next door! I danced the night away and my feet are feeling it today. Can't wait to go back!

i remember the problems that the old top rank dance hall had back in the 60's and 70's, while other places in the city was quiet like the mecca ,after eight club saw very little problems,so i be expecting this new place to be like the old top rank place.

I would hope there wasn't trouble on the first night that was full of "VIP"'s ....wait til the Ikon riff raff return.

Same place, same clientele, same trouble once the novelty has worn off.

Looks pretty swanky, but I suppose time will tell. It will need something special to keep people coming back as us Sotonians can be quite fickle.

Hopefully it'll have a better (friendly) atmospehere than it's predecessor and you won't have to worry about looking at someone the wrong way....i can't help having eyes that look in different direction

Hope they have also sorted out the getting home problem!

Anyway can't wait to cut some shapes on what looks like a dance floor that could make my eyes go even more funny!

The problem with the new place will be the same as the last !!

This is no london, we dont have D list Celebs thinking they are A list trying to make a place trendy !!

Ikon and Diva were fine when they open but the biggest issue was the management ran the door not the door Staff !! doorman dont care who they upset as long as the club is clean !! a manager wants to be everyones friend! The doorstaff say who can and can not come in not the fnacy dress wanna be trendy manager stood next to them !!

Sort that issue out and the club mite just be a success !!

BARRED MEANS BARRED NOT !! not sorry ill buy you a drink manager can i come back in !!

Same tent, different circus.

Wonder when all the clowns and animals will fill this place up.

Clubs like these need to adopt "face control" to have any chance of surviving.

I went to the VIP night last night, very very impressive, and had a great night, but it was the 1st and last time i will be seen in there. Once the doors open to the public and the CHAVS roll in god help everyone, 4,000 people this place holds that means a lot more people for these CHAVS to punch, kick and do what ever they please to! the CHAVS are the problem these clubs have not the doorstaff or managment, bar anyone that looks like a chav and everyone else can then relax and enjoy themselves.Y thank you and goodnight

I went to Oceana Southampton on the VIP night and really enjoyed it. You can see where they've spent the £7m (and where they haven't!), it's very extravagant. The co-ordinated entertainment was very impressive - so much in one night. There was something happening in every room and so many promotions staff - really good launch night.

Apart from the 3 dolly birds in the sailor outfits, the clientele was extraordinarily plain... was it V-I-P night or P-I-G night? May have to lower the lighting on the dance floor if they want this place to be a success...

as there for the preview night on monday and was a huge fight on the icehouse dancefloor about 1 in the morning with one lad having to goto hospital aterwards.thy've seemed to make it alot nicer and so on but the problems are going to be the same over carged clubbers and over charged bouncers

I was there last night and I can't believe that there was nowhere in the whole place that served food. Considering the size, I would have thought they would have incorporated a restaraunt at least. When we left, there wasn't even a burger van outside!
Posted by: Julie Thompson, Upper Shirley on 8:44pm Thu 17 Jul 08
............Also, in my opinion, the bass completely drowned out the vocals and instrumentals on the music being played in the 'Reykjavik icehouse' - music was unrecognisable.

the whole place appears to have been poulated by cloth-eared dimwits.............

I also went to the "VIP" night last night, it really was not VIP. The pros, Yes the club looks great and quite impressive
The Cons, really expensive drinks, none of the toilets flushed, mens and women's(on the VIP night-£7m! please)def did not spend money there! Harassed for £2 if you dared squirting the cheap deodorant, ran out of tonic before 10.30pm. I really could go on... For The club to make money, this will inevitably mean letting in the scroats of Southampton, and there are a few! I agree with the comments about the sound system as well, far too much bass, it ruined the music. Lastly, I heard Bill (the Manager) on Power FM talking about the opening, could Luminar not have got someone who at least sounded intelligent! Your interview was crap, you sounded thick and not at all passionate. SORT YOUR TOILETS OUT!! It not rocket science...

Yet again something slighty different in southampton and all people can do is slate it, get a life!
We went to the VIP night and thought the place looked amazing and has great potential, just think no more going out in the cold or wet when you want a change of scene! All the clubs are there to cover all tastes and with amazing chill out areas. The live performances were brilliant and as the masters of live performance Louisiana does it brilliantly, I could see where the money had been spent in there and I am so glad that it wasn't turned in to another 'bog standard' club.
Go and enjoy the experience!

Yawn. So you fell for the old "lick of paint" trick? Big deal. How can the place possibly cater for all tastes, when it's all just variants on the same old drum-machine driven talent-free cr@p? "Masters" of live performance? Pah!

What a turd

Why so rude bambi? The person you quoted went and enjoyed it very much by what they said. I find it hard to believe how anyone can really give the place a thumbs up or down yet even if you went to launch. The fact is time will tell and if you are calling the place cr@p please go a few times first eh? If you live in soton and love your city why drag it through the dirt just because you dont like going out, clubbing etc? If your never going to go you dont have an opinion really.

Went to 'VIP' opening night - Didnt feel like a VIP as there so many 'VIP's there (and chavs). Design and decor is good and enjoyed the variety of rooms. Drinks are far too expensive but I suppose thats how they get their £7 million back.

The Bar Quarter (old Hotshots), Icehouse (Ikon) and Disco (Diva) are totally unrecognisable, and it's clear that a great deal of work went into transforming the site.

It was obvious that most angles were covered; hundreds of bar tenders and glass collectors keeping the place clean and tidy, constant entertainment in all rooms, plenty more toilets (which the girls loved - and I didn't have any problems with flushing), and the drinks prices seemed pretty standard. At the end of the day this is the best club in the city, so £2 or so for a drink is great value for money when you consider the size and merits of the venue. There is a section to cater for most music tastes, ages etc.

Well impressed. Will be there again soon!

Why so rude? The "get a life" comment aimed at anyone who doesn't agree with him, that's why. Maybe a bit of an over-the-top reaction, looking back, but I'm a bit fed up with people using the "get a life" comment to demean anyone who doesn't share their opinions, that's all. Every time someone on these boards says something someone else disagrees with, it always degenerates into personal insults and nonsense like "get a life". It's depressing, really, that nobody is capable of simply disagreeing with someone any more, without having to make it personal. I pity these guys' friends, they must be bored sh!tless having to agree on everything all the time for fear of being told to "get a life"

I haven't called the place cr@p, it's just not my cup of tea. What I meant was, it's just the same old Ikon and Diva with a bit more glitz. I'm also a bit fed up that there's nothing to do in this city of an evening unless you like dance music. But that's a whole different rant

Hopefully the club will stay good if they watch the sort of people they let in and don't just let all the **** in just to fill it up. Maybe they should make it a slighty higher age group but def being choosy on the clientelle, would be a shame to let it end up a dive.
