Jan will mix it up against Stoke
FIRST team head coach Jan Poortvliet will field two different teams in Saints' final warm-up friendly against Stoke tonight.
The Dutchman will start with the team who began against West Ham on Friday, saying they deserve their chance again after the impressive display in the 2-2 draw at St Mary's.
He then plans to change the team for the second half, or after about an hour, to conserve his players' energy before the season opener at Cardiff on Saturday.
Kelvin Davis and Nathan Dyer will be among those given run-outs against the newly-promoted Premier League side tonight after recovering from recent injuries.
"I am going to start with the team from Friday and when they play 45 minutes or an hour then it's OK," Poortvliet said.
"With the team who played on Friday night, because they did well you say OK, why not?' - you stick with that team.
He added: "We had a game on Friday which was a tough game with a lot of energy and against Stoke we want to give a lot of energy also.
"But we will play two teams because the Championship is close and we have to keep a little bit of energy for the Saturday game."

I am really upset!! Just taken my dog for a walk, it is a lousy day, but I can't find anything negative to say about this article!! I am sure that the usual doom mongers will have their say? My expectations for tonight are to see a cagey, low risk, typical friendly. As long as we are ready for Saturday, I am happy (whoops, what will the moaners make of that!!). COYR.

Well my moan is about people who come on this site to bait and wind up the Lowe loving and the Lowe hating ends of the fan base. I just wish they would all clear off. I don't give a toss about Lowe. Just let him get on with his job running the PLC and telling Wilde what to do. All I care about is the team and how they play and Jan is doing a good job so far but Saturday's game and the next half dozen or so will tell us how well he has done. I wish him well because I want the team to succeed and I want to enjoy my football as a Saints fan. So we don't want your excessive and unearned Lowe praise nor do we want your anti Lowe bile. We want Saints fans who are interested in football and how the team are doing.

This is not a moan - just an observation. If Saints are playing a low key friendly with a split team - to avoid burn out and injury - why play at all. I am sure the other 11 friendlies should have been enough. Anyway my glass is 3/4 full. Come on you Reds.

Whoops!! My previous post did not translate it's intended sarcasm in the way I intended. I am a 100% "Football Person" and visit this site on most days. All I want is a reasonable discussion on football matter, and not the constant moaners, either pro or anti Lowe et al. I will be at St Marys tonight to show my commitment to my team and it's management/staff, I like "A Saints Fan" only want my team to be sucessful and play good football. Foward in hope!

Liverpool fans have been voted the most attractive in football with Portsmouth's blue army taking the dubious honour of worst looking. (The Mirror)
If they think the men are ugly they should see Portsmouth women. No Wonder both Sailor Sam and that idiot skate in the forest married Southampton girls.

Mind you, the ugliest of them all is that horrible, bloated, red-faced g*t who likes the occasional bung they apparently employ as a manager. Can anyone remember his name?

First we will start on Lowe, then move onto Wilde. Everyone knows Wilde is really in control because he never says anything.
Our agenda for bringing down the RL administration? Sheer anti-Loweness. Nothing more. We are jealous of his damaged cheek follicles that indicate his high (inter) breeding.
We are also jealous that he has a higher plane of understanding. Some people think that he is merely patronising. We understand that what he has is a gift.
The reason that I am posting this addition now is that I’m sick of the in fighting.
I’m off to do what a "proper fan does"

I cannot continue to support my club whilst Lowe and Wilde is in charge. I blame only Lowe for our demise from the Premiership and our current financial status.
Can anyone show me an example where the head of a PLC has failed to bring the desired results, been sacked, only to be allowed back after a couple of years with open arms to "save us", just because the next Chairman failed to turn around the fortunes of company. The rot was started by Lowe. He is a business man that self confessed to know nothing about football. That was apparent in his constant poor decision making, costing us relegation. He was shown a constant determination to have his fingers on every single pulse of the club, making all the decisions, signings etc. But he knows nothing about football. Gray and Wigley anyone?
By supporting Saints, you are showing faith and support in the people who are entrusted to run our club. Unfortunately you cannot separate the two, as these people are being paid to make decisions that have and will effect our future. I have no faith or trust in Lowe so cannot morally support my club until he has gone for good.
Ask yourself, a season ticket holder for 25 years making this stance!! How many other supporters feel the same way. That is why we will not fill the stadium and will continue to struggle financial with Lowe incharge.
All the youngsters we are playing this season will just be groomed for the next sell to a bigger club.
During the Branfoot era, the only way we managed to get him out before he destroyed the club was to boycott spending money with the club and attending matches. As much as it hurts me, Im sticking to my decision until Lowe goes. Lowe out, Lowe out.

I think if you read the post again - carefully - you will see that you are saying the same pretty much the same thing. Obviously the ironic humour was lost.

I was very suprised to see that they were only planning to open up the Kingsland for fans.
Surley this is only encouraging people not to go? I know it's a money saving tactic, suspecting that it won't be all that great, what with it being the last friendly before the first game of the proper season and the fact that it's against Stoke who don't exactly know how to play proper football. But especially after Friday's game I'm sure more people would want to go.
Apart from all that I'm looking forward to watching tonights game, if mainly to see how we do against a physical side. The preperation has been spot on so far I think.

There was no doubt that financially we were stable under his chairmanship, but being financially stable in the Premiership is a **** sight easier thing to do than it is in the Championship as Crouch has found out. The previous Chairman gambled on promotion with more players and higher wages for them and lost. Having just missed promotion the season before I can see and understand why he did it. I wish Lowe had gambled some more money when we were in Premiership. We never went and spent £5-6m on one good player, rather spreaded it over many average ones. We lost an opportunity after the Cup Final to kick on. We are where we are and I personally think financially, the hole we are in Lowe can get us out of. We have an equal chance of promotion as all the other teams, so bring on Cardiff, 3 points and the garden will be all rosy again (until the first loss!!)

How is this going to help the team. I cant see any great benifit to this fiendly tonight at all, given the quotes coming from SMS i am wondering if this was a match JP wanted or if somebody at the club decided foolishly that we could rake in revenue for the club. It would have been better IMO to have played Fridays match against West Ham maybe had this match Sunday and then give the lads a week of low intensity training to let them be as ready as possible for Saturdays game.

Eveyday, it seems all I ever read on here is about Lowe. Rarely, though do I see any debate which focuses on the facts and doesn't get emotional.
So, lets have a go.
Lowe took us out of The Dell and into St Marys. Much as I liked The Dell, it had to happen although, ironically, it has probably cost us a lot of points over the years as teams are less intimidated by the proximity of the crowd.
We had some good years in The Premiership and ultimately in the FA Cup under Lowe (agreed, some dodgy ones also).
We finally got relegated. Was that Lowe's fault. I don't believe so. We had as good a squad as we had had in ages. We also had two major problems. Firstly, the Svensson injury. Maybe Lowe should have splashed out on a replacement. Seconldy, a manager who continued to play his son when he wasn't fit enough even to train, and who regularly failed to team Crouch with Phillips (who proved last year how good he still is). Basically, it was Redknap who took us down not Lowe.
Unfortunately, the crowd was woo'd by false promises from Wild about non-existent money and it is from Wilde's chairmanship that todays mess stems from.
Most supporters, like me, would appreciate a large injection of cash from somewhere but it is unreasonable for Lowe just to walk. He is entitled to a return on his investment just like any other other businessman in any other business.
I awate the abuse!

The reason we are in financial difficulties is because we moved to a new stadium which was followed by relegation due to results on the pitch.
Far too many people blame everything that has gone wrong on one member of a board who sometimes made decisions against his wishes.
Is is so easy to criticise with the benefit of hindsight but I remember numerous people slagging off the appointment of Strachan, and also people applauding the appointment of Wigley.
Funny how quick they changed their minds, but then they didn't have to choose did they.
Also Sturrock could well of worked out if not for a few prima-donnas in the squad disrupting
things then buggering off at the first opportunity, and who knows what would have happened if Hoddle had been allowed to return.
If you do not want to watch Saints in the Championship then stay at home watching SKY but please stop piling all the blame on one man, who is doing his utmost to get us back to the Premiership, when no doubt those and many like you will soon find it in there hearts to forgive and forget.
Up the Saints!

Most supporters, like me, would appreciate a large injection of cash from somewhere but it is unreasonable for Lowe just to walk. He is entitled to a return on his investment just like any other other businessman in any other business. I awate the abuse! [/quote] Excellent points well made.
I am so glad the internet was not around in 1973 when Lawrie Mac took over Teds mid-table side at Christmas and got them relegated.
Both Ted and Lawrie would have been hounded out of the club by a similar witch-hunt.

I always say that I have 500 shares because it puts me in perspective to Lowe who I read somewher has 1.5m (I have no idea if that is accurate).
Unfortunately, shareholders are not entitled to a return on their investment - it's an absolute gamble.
Why it's important to mention themm is that Lowe's (and my) best chance of a return on his investment is to get the Saints back into the Premiership as soon as possible.
I also agree with you about the time when Wild was in charge and I think that Lowe has made some good steps in the salvation of the Saints.
I also believe that, BROADLY SPEAKING, the Boardroom issues are peripheral to the Saints position today. When you look back at Managers since WGS left I think that they have ALL been fairly poor to disastorous for the Club.
Add the attitude, heart and spiririt of the players and you have a recipe for disaster. And sure enough the Club has been in meltdown for the last 3/4 years.
Looking forward, never backwards, we do now appear to have something rumbling down at St. Mary's that looks as if we are at the beginning of an upturn.
Nothing to do with Lowe, good or bad, but just a part of the cycle of football maybe.
Alternatively has got to grips with the Club and maybe, just maybe, has picked on a reasonable Manager and a few good young players coming into their time.
I don't know.
I do know that the Club will die unless it gets more support and I repeat earlier posts that it an absolute tragedy that people would rather stay away than give any appearance of support to Lowe.
I now live 15 miles from Luton and I observe my local footie friends watching their Club dying.
Death is not optional - it comes to us all and every fan who stays away - HOWEVER RIGHT AND PROPER his reason is killing the Club.
On a lighter note, I'm going to fill up my "Olympic sized" swimming pool and hope the sun comes out tomorrow.

You are right, people staying away will eventually kill a club. The other thing is imprudent spending like Leeds.
You are also right that if this current 'gamble' succeeds it will have little to do with Lowe. He is cutting costs, which is right and proper. The fact that evidence suggests we might actually end up with a decent team is more luck than judgement. Although you could argue that his investment in the acadamy showed wonderful forsight!

Upset
You keep saying that Lowe is killing the club. But how?
We are in a mess which he has not caused (even though, like many people in the Saints set up especially some of the managers, he has made some bad decisions along the way).
He is trying to get us out of the mess and he has to do so without any funds. If you want him out the best way is for the team to be successful. The team will not succeed if there is no money coming into the system.
As I have previously said, it is unreasonable to expect Lowe to just walk away. I doubt that Lowe cares about the football club in the same way that you or I do. For him it is a business and he will not go until a buyer comes in who will give him a good return on his investment. Why should he?
So lets hope we can do well without your cash and that of the other stay aways. You're missing some great football by the way and surely that is why you are a Saints fan?

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists the transfer saga surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo is over and he will stay at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo's future at United has been the subject of constant speculation all summer with the Portuguese refusing to commit himself to the club.
Real Madrid have been waiting in the wings to swoop for Ronaldo with the Spanish giants not hiding their liking for the dazzling winger.
Reports in Spain have claimed Ronaldo would inform Ferguson he wanted to leave Old Trafford for Madrid when he returns to the club later this week to undergo treatment on his ankle injury.
Throughout the summer, Ferguson has remained adamant that last season's top scorer would not be leaving the club and the wily Scot insists the whole saga is now finished.

I'd disagree with that. I'm off down to St Marys tonight, and I don't show faith and support in Lowe or Wilde. I don't hate them, but I don't like them. I'd just prefer for Southampton to win, and I want to get a look at this Schneiderlin bloke who everyone in my local was raving about on Friday night.
Remember, sometimes it is just a game.

In any event, he just can't leave in a vacuum.
I have asked various posters to name the alternatives to Lowe but, just at the moment there aren't any.
Where you are right is that the minute a decent alternative to Lowe comes up -with serious money - he will realise that his number is up and just disappear into the sands of history and be forgotten.
The real crunch is how we can persuade "upset fans" to carry on going to the matches when they have such strong feelings about Lowe.
All I can say is please, please remember the Saints wonderful past and understand that the downhill spiral will slowly continue. The financial position will slowly (or probably quickly) get worse and the Club will fold.
Just think, every 1,000 fans that stay away cost the Club (NOT Lowe) about £20,000 for every home game. So, if its as many as 5,000 staying away it's costing the Club (the Player's budget) something like £100,000 for every Home game.
It's not rocket science to guess what the Board could do with that sort of money.
Before others say it, you can't pay it out as dividends to shareholders until the Club is in the black.
Just suppose with that sort of extra income you could put £25,000 into the black hole of the Club's finances and you could put £25,000 into the pockets of 1, 2 or maybe 3 first class players (I've got no idea what first class Premier chasing players cost, perhaps you could help).
That is why I say it is the fans killing the Club, not Lowe. You have the freedom to not go to matches because your feelings are so strong and so firmly held BUT you are killing the Club.
