Taxi wars
CRUISE liner passengers arriving in Southampton could be left stranded at the docks as a war between rival taxi firms threatens to erupt.
Taxi trade leaders say the situation is like a "tinder box" and last night called for emergency talks with port bosses. They say drivers fear for their livelihoods and that "it would not take much" for a blockade or boycott to bring chaos to the docks.
The row centres on proposals to allow private hire cabs to pick up passengers disembarking at Southampton.
Superliners
Currently, only hackney carriage cabs, those that can be hailed in the street, operate at the city's three cruise terminals.
Port owner Associated British Ports (ABP) wants to allow in more taxis because of the boom in superliners, which can carry up to 4,000 passengers, calling at Southampton.
ABP is considering a number of solutions, including a proposal from the owner of private hire firm West Quay Cars to allow all Southampton's cabs open access to the terminals.
Rank marshals inside the terminals would co-ordinate the scheme, to be funded by a £1 surcharge paid by the passenger.
The scheme, dubbed Comb-ined Taxis of Southampton, is the brainchild of West Quay Cars boss Lee Haynes, who has set out his plan in a letter posted to more than 1,000 drivers.
Mr Haynes said the operation would be run totally independently and that he was simply trying to improve the service received by tourists arriving in Southampton.
He told the Daily Echo: "There are people who spend £8,000 on their annual holiday and then are being greeted with guys in flip-flops and football shorts and they are being charged £20 to go to the airport - I don't want people to have that impression of my city. It's something I'm passionate about. I'm trying to do something for the whole of the trade, but everyone is against me because they are not getting the right information."
Taxi trade representatives are angry at a lack of consultation and say they have been "left in the dark" by ABP.
Transport and General Workers' Union cab section chairman Perry McMillan agreed there had been an increase in passenger numbers, but said the trade as a whole should be involved in developing a solution. He said: "We don't have a problem with a private hire car making a general booking, but what we do object to is somebody who sees an opportunity to expand their own company with no benefit to the docks or passengers.
"If we do not get around the table with ABP, or if West Quay Cars are given a free hand, then there will be a lot of drivers who will be frightened for their livelihoods in what is a very difficult time to earn a living.
"If that happens, then I think there will be a rise in militancy among taxi drivers."
Private land
Clive Johnson, chairman of the Southampton Taxi Consult-ative Council and Radio Taxis, said he had been forced to quell talk of industrial action.
"It's a tinder box and at this present moment I have got control of it, but if they (ABP) do not sit down and talk to us it would not take much," he said.
"We want to show ABP that the main body of the trade is there to help them."
An ABP spokesman said it was committed to undertaking a full consultation process with the trade, but would not comment on threats of industrial action.
Ian Hall, chairman of the Southampton Hackney Assoc-iation, said there should be no talk of militant action.
"The docks are on private land owned by ABP and they can do whatever they want," Mr Hall said.

I realised the other day the upside of the recession. Had to catch a cab and the driver was polite. The return cab arrived within two minutes of my call - again the driver was polite.
This was in Portsmouth and I even pointed out I was from Southampton!

They want to start by teaching these 'supposed' professional drivers how to drive for a start.
These taxi drivers cause mayhem every Friday within the docks.

Those Taxi drivers are agitated all the time. I drove in to the docks at 10.30am the other Saturday and briefly slowed my car to ask the Security Guard on gate 10 a quick question. A West Quay taxi driver behind beeped his horn and showed his annoyance by flapping his arms about! What an idiot!

A holiday begins when you leave your house to when you arrive back at it. The experience for the customer should be as good as possible - after all people (tourists) make up their minds on a place i.e. Southampton in the first few minutes. The docks are not exactly the most pleasing to the eye so at least for the tourist receiving a nice comfortable trip from the dock to the airport or train station would help forge a better opinion of Southampton.

I wanna know how come a hackney cab at 3am will cost me anywhere between £18-25, when West Quay cabs do exactly the same route, same time, yet manage to be endlessly more polite and prompt and only charge me £12-15!!!

I want to know why West Quay charge 25% more than any other Taxi Firm during the day, they also have a minimum charge. So that means if the passengers from the ships use West Quay cars, they will not be receiving the cheapest option. Is this what A B P and the council want.

I recently used a hackney cab. It was 2.30am, I was on my own. The driver was really rude to me and when I picked him up on it, he threw me out of the taxi because he didnt like my attitude...his words...(I can assure you he was the one with the attitude). I think kicking a woman out on her own is disgusting at that time of night. I looked for a name card so I could complain but there was not one visable. I will NEVER use them again. Expensive and rude

Also they change tariffs as and when they like hackney carriages cannot do that. You travel with 5 or more mates in a west quay multi seater then come back and say they are cheap. I have a 6 seater taxi I ran the meter from Terminus Terrace to Bitterne Manor at 12.30 am with 6 persons and they kept telling eachother how much was on my meter. I asked if there was a problem, they said "we just thought it would be more than it is". At the B.P garage they paid me £6.75; at 19.00 hrs they had booked a west quay multi seater and it cost them £10.00 to Terminus Terrace from the B.P garage. So love whats cheap about west quay then? In the city multi seater Private hires charge more Hackneys DO NOT.

If you are going to be a taxi driver realise it is a service for the public and treat it as such.
Also, learn the Highway Code and have some consideration for your fellow drivers.

Hardly any of you are discussing the issue in hand - taxis at the docks. just using this to slate a taxi firm. If you want to make a comment make an appropriate one.

For years there have not been enough taxi's in southampton, by allowing part time licences only able to operate during peak times we would get more people off the streets in the early hours of the mornings, i,e. Friday and Saturday which would of course reduce drunken violence. The increased volume created by the Cruise Liners cannot currently be accommodated by the current number of licenses.

Ok This is how I see it. Lee Haynes is a buisness man,he is trying to create an empire. He makes his money by taking rent from drivers, just like the other firms do.They do not employ the drivers,so if they have no drivers they have no income. What he is proposing is ok if it was run by an independant body not by him.If this goes ahead all that would happen is that West Quay Cars would get all the good jobs ie Heathrow etc and the small jobs would go to the rest.At present the only queues I see is the large amount of Hackney Cars waiting at the Ranks. If it goes the other way, with one company controlling it like the Airport. Then you will create a monopoli which will lead to higher fares and a lower quality of service. This system is desinged not to help the visitors of Southampton but to increase the revenue of the Taxi Firms (not the drivers) in southampton.

I use taxis quite a lot in and around Southampton, and I would rather let 20 red plates drive by and wait for a West Quay taxi than flag one down.
Southampton red plate (and white plate for that matter) drivers are rude, arrogant and some even have questionable hygiene! They rarely turn up on time when ordered - if at all sometimes and when flagged down my experience is they rarely stop, instead preferring to speed to the more lucrative docks than pick up a local.
Only last week-end, a driver on a rank in the city center locked his doors and refused to let me in unless I told him where I was going before I got in – something I’m pretty sure you’re not allowed to do.
I for one am all in favour of supporting local business, and I am aware of the feeling West Quay taxis provoke in the Southampton taxi drivers, but when you all behave the way you do towards the local population is it any wonder we would prefer to use a taxi company that provides taxis when they say they will, with a smart courteous and helpful driver?

Why don't the Cruise companies set up and run their own 'Taxi' service?
Passengers could pre-book their journey prior to disembarking, the companies increase revenue and have control over the levels of service and presentation. After enjoying a high level of service onboard, there's no need for it to end as you reach Southampton.
I'm off to speak with ABP!

there are some good taxi drivers still out there.

How strange!
Perry McMilitant suddenly wants to sit round a table and discuss.
This is purely because he cannot bully them and hold them to ransom like he so often does with the council.
This shows yet again what a gutless bully he is.
ABP will not be bullied, you're darn right they won't, so Mcmilitant sucks up to them like a kid with no friends.
Remember this, he and his suck ups are greedy little filth, that despise equality, whilst falsely advocating their right for it.
They lie cheat and intimidate, for their own personal gain. FACT !
Good on the private hire for offering a cheaper service than the robbing militant Hackney bullyboys.

A lot of the runs are to the Station/Airport/City and busses would be an option at busy times when lack of cabs is a problem.Actually ABP have been pretty fair.At the Airport only one Taxi Company (Checker Cabs) is licensed to operate and they pay a shed load of money to BAA for the privelege. It could happen in the Docks unless the matter is sorted.

It could happen in the Docks unless the matter is sorted.

i would like to comment about this situation arising in my opinion perry mcmillan and everyone else from the union are doing a great job supporting the taxi trade and voicing all our concerns to the right organisations i personally would like to operate my business driving a taxi(red plate) without the stress and worry about other companys trying to force work away from me.....
to everyone else out there we are looked upon as moaning taxi drivers but we are not were simply trying to earn an honest living like most folks out there
if ABP allows the likes of west quay cars to come in and service the docks even though without the support of other local taxi firms they cannot cope they themselfs will deeply regret it but like most things in this country they never learn until its too late
SO GUYS REMEMBER LETS NOT LET THAT HAPPEN AND IF A COMPLETE BOYCOTT OF THE DOCKS IS CALLED LETS ALL PULL TOGETHER 100% A TO MAKE SURE NO ONE ELSE CAN TAKE OUR LIVELIHOODS AWAY FROM US
(hopefuly none of the above needs to be taken and this all resolved a.s.a.p)

Any one concerned with the soton taxi (hackney)trade should just calm down and take a step back for a minute.Has any one heard of any complaints from abp themselves? All the complaints I have seen come from a 'two bob shyster' by the name of Haynes and his cronies.Who the hell is he? He has no concern how the docks run, just so long as he can get in there and make a fast buck, to prop up his wife and mother-in-laws company: West Quay Cars.If abp had any real problems with the service provided by the present system, surely the best thing to do would be to discuss it with those that operate it.Not change the whole workings of the docks just to benefit this slimy snake-oil salesman and risk upsetting the whole of the Hackney trade. Who, on the whole, provide a good service for the cruise ship industry. I will admit that there are a few people that let the trade down at times. But, on the whole, most of us are normal, sensible people just trying to earn a living by providing a service. We are not going to bite the hand that feeds us! So, if anyone from abp is reading this, get in touch with one or all of the trade reps and voice your concerns, if you have any. And lets put a stop to this war of words being fought out in public. And stop giving Haynes the publicity he craves. After all, this is a man who bought a thriving company from a real business man(Dusty Miller) 4 or 5 years ago, and is now so desperate that he has pinned all his hopes on getting into the docks. Let's just see how long he stays in 'his city' when he fails. And, just in case your reading this Mr.Haynes and you are planning for the future, may I suggest that, seing you are so fond of poncing around in your little blue jacket, Pontins are crying out for bluecoats this time of year. Time to make some other town/city your new home!

Exactly my point blackmailer.
You are bullies, that can only blackmail (Which you endearingly term as "Boycott) to get what you want.
ABP are more than a match for your pathetic little group of nobodies, so bring it on.
All that rubbish about lets sit down. (OR ELSE) that's what you mean.
You are lowlife guttersnipes that are a far cry from yesterdays strikers, who had the sympathy of the public for GENUINE change.
You are greedy little lost sheep, that think McMilitant can win the day with his arrogant wolf pack tactics.
Gutless blackmailers.

One thing to consider, ABP are involved so have a look at all the f**k ups they've been involved in over the last few years and you'll see anything can happen!
Also, good idea about putting a taxi rank on Dibden Bay.

They are legally only allowed to charge you 25% extra on the portion of the journey THAT IS OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARY. If they try to charge 25% on top of the whole journey refuse to pay and report them to the council.
Also if you pre-book a taxi and a hackney turns up they cannot charge you a boundary charge as they are acting as a private hire.

Fabrication/Welding.
Not that this should make any difference, unless you would like to turn my profession in to a reason i dislike blackmailing, militant losers!
The truth is, i have watched the filth Mcmillan parade and p0nce his beliefs, then when he doesn't get his way, spit the dummy out and resort to blackmail and threats.
This is not about me disliking taxi drivers, this is about certain ones in particular, lying and twisting their way into situations that purely benefit them.
These same people have nothing to offer, unless they, and only they, stand to personally gain.
If you want public support, try being lead by an honest, down to earth frontman with integrity, whos sole ambition is to fight for the good of the drivers AND the public alike. Then you may get some sympathy from a public, that can see through a veiled and badly worded tirade, that only serves to sicken to the core, genuine people.
Take a back seat at one of his gobby hyped up sermons, there is nothing of substance, only junk after junk after junk. Everything he gets involved in, is purely to give himself a stage due to his narcisistic belief, that he's important.

Is this anything to do a with Hackney Carriage Licences worth between £20/£30k apiece because drivers can pick up anywhere? If so perhaps the Hackney licence ownersa are worried that their 'investment' might reduce in value if competition is opened up. Some one told me that that there are only 100 or so Hackney cabs licenced to operate out of the Docks. On busy days this is surely not enough to cater for the cruise passenger need especially as quite a few Hackneys are on contract work during school term time and the main requirement is when cruise ship passengers get off ie between 8/9 am

I get a taxi from central shirley cabs at least 3 times a week and they are always prompt and smart. Ive never had any problem with the drivers or the taxi being late, where as when i used west quay, i found the staff rather rude and scruffy. Central shirley cars also dont have a boundry charge. All in all im very happy with the service.

Do you really want someone like this suppling you a PH car???? I think not.. Plus he has got the council lic department to send these letters out, Why are they being so helpful? there are a lot of questions that need to be aswered..[bold]bold[/bold] [/quote] [bold]bold[/bold] I also had a letter from Lee Haynes and it tells me that he is out to gain from other taxi drivers and companies by charging the drivers £1 to pick up from the docks and the driver charges an extra £1 to the customer.
If i was to get a taxi from the docks and get charged a extra £1 i would feel i was being ripped off when you can get a cab from anywhere else in the city without this extra charge.
Have the cruise companies been imformed that there customers will be charged this extra cost and get ripped off.

I book a car 1 day from West Quay Cars and it was over half hour late and the driver got out of the car to open the boot with a cigeret in his mouth and the car stunk and when i tried to be polit and talk to the driver he just turned his sterio up. How rood was that.
I will never use West Quay cars again.
I now use Centeral Shirley Cabs and i recieve a better service 023 80393939.
The drivers seem to be more helpfull, chatty and even meet me at my door and drop me where i want to go and thay are on average £2 cheeper each trip i make and prompt even at busy times with the rush hour

The whole industry is corrupt, especially the firms. You pay £80/£100 a week to keep them afloat and all they do is look after their favourites. They even let some drivers go into the office so that they can pick their own jobs.If you want to go far in this industry you have to have a long tongue,be nice to the office staff and be prepared to give back handers. If you cannot lower yourselves to do this then I suggest form your own company.

No one likes Hackneys, as they are thieves. Their personal hygiene is that of any number of dying animal, too lazy or unfit to clean themselves, where euthanasia would be the better option.
Hackney or private, you are all the same robbing sc"m. Trying to differentiate between the 2, is asking do you want sh!t on your dinner or puke.

You are right, i didn't bother reading it, as you are just a greedy wife of a fat useless loser.
My point was not what side you were arguing for, but why you were arguing.
It's the same ending, you are a fat lazy wife, with a fat useless husband.
I don't read the rubbish, just seek out filth like you and their motives.
You are not interested in the public, or the good of your sweaty lumps colleagues, you are interested in how your fat little fingers can grab more cash, to spend on more chips, smokes and diet pills.
Now run along, there's a good little dog.
