Children ‘risk lives’ by halting air ambulance

CHILDREN are putting lives at risk by refusing to get out of the way as Hampshire's air ambulance tries to land at Southampton with critically ill patients on board.

Pilots and paramedics have been sworn at by youngsters when they have been asked to move and have been met with cocky responses like: "Are you going to make us?"

Some landings have been delayed by up to half an hour while people on the ground, including paramedics in waiting ambulances, battle to clear the area andmake it safe.

Take-off is also being hindered by youngsters refusing to move a safe distance from the spinning rotors.

Air ambulance bosses have warned lives could be lost - and urged youngsters to think about the critically ill people on board first.

If the problem continues helicopter chiefs say they could be forced to pull out of the site altogether and find somewhere else.

But doing so would create a logistical nightmare for paramedics who need to have a helipad as close to the hospital as possible to get patients critical care quickly.

The dangerous situation has occurred numerous times at the Lordshill Recreation Ground in Southampton, known locally as Five Acres.

Pilots have reported the problems at weekends, during school holidays and since the start of the summer break.

Merrick Forsyth, director of flight operations for Bond Air Services, which supplies pilots to fly the aircraft, said: "It's happened several times recently and it is a small minority of kids who clearly think it's hilariously funny. There have been a number of occasions on weekends and in the holidays mainly and it tends to start with one kid and the others latch on. It presents us with real problems.

We use Lordshill when we have a critically ill patient who needs to get to hospital quickly as this is the nearest landing area.

"However, if it is not safe to land we won't - but that might well compromise the patient.

"Spending half an hour getting kids out of the way delays the response to the person most in need."

South Central Ambulance Service medical director Charles Deakin, who fought for six years to get an air ambulance for Hampshire, added: "When the helicopter lands, every second counts for the ill person on board."

Hampshire police said they had received no reports of problems but would try to help.

They had the opportunity to place one on top of the new cardio suite but didn't. Now they plan to place it atop of the new childrens block - but that is a staged process and could take a decade to complete.

What about police/community officers being there when it lands if they can attend ?

Maby they should knock down the waste of space 1 story car park at the general and build a proper 5 story car park instead, giving free parking to disabled drivers, free parking to hospital staff, and a heli-pad on the top floor. but that would be sensible and far to obvious .

Your suggestion is by far the most sensible. But it wasn't mentioned as a possibility at Hackett's recent management love-in.

Because they'd have to pay £1.70 an hour to park it there.... extortion in the extreme, you can park in the Centre of Winchester for 70p per hour less....

I would have thought that some good old fashioned communications and joined up thinking would have been the answer. By that I mean that when a casivac flight is expected, the local plod are called who could despatch one of their vehicles plus crew to the landing area. They could then ensure that the area was kept clear by simply arresting the miscreants, sticking them in the said vehicle and letting them out only on the payment of a suitable fine once the emergency is over (the fine should be paid by the parent or guardian of said miscreant at which time, and only at that time, they could be handed back to the said parent or guardian). Sorted!

    Ooops sorry...

Simple really - fence off the area where the heli needs to land, with CCTV attached nearby to catch the little loves on camera.

Identify them, find their parent(s), fine them or stop the parent's benefits.

That should sort the issue - don't rely on the police, how can they charge a 14yr old Chav anyway?

Fit the Helo with the weapons system from an Apache Longbow gun ship, they'd be able to clear the landing area from several kilometers away.

During quiet times it could patrol Lordshill, Millbrook and Thornhill, eliminating the chav scum

    3 points here,
Surely as air ambulance was introduced some time ago thought should of been put in place as to the best place as to where it is to land, coupled with the increasing desire for all to drive cars .. the obvious place has to be in the hospital grounds, as stated before, the car park is far too small and too low, so extend up top floor to make a heliport. This needs to be done, so get on with it, you can charge the disabled too that would pay for it ! In the mean time over the road there is a lot of open green space called Holybrook cemy! Now come on surely there is enough space there to land?
And while were thinking of improving things Coxford Road crosses the M27 at Chilworth, it's a private Road, why is this not an Ambulance access road to the M27? to save the long slow rush though congested Roads? while were about it, clear Shirley high street of clutter too, and let all traffic flow!
Seeing an ambulance try and drive up here is unpleasant as drivers cant get out of the way due to the clutter.

I have lived out of the country for many years so please excuse my ignorance on some aspects of life in Southampton in the year 2008. I read the Echo every morning but I find the news articles more depressing every day and so I am considering stopping this ritual. But, I feel I must comment on this article. How old are these 'children'? Surely there must be at least one responsible person around to put an end to their criminal behavior? I do not understand why the police cannot be there when a helicopter is coming in to land to arrest the little thugs. How about then they could either require the parents and/or the miscreants work (no pay of course) in the morgue to see what happens when they deliberatly withold urgent medical care. Finally, what is a "chav" and what is "tombstoning"?

On a serious note there are probably Air Navigation Laws and Air Safety laws whereby the individuals involved could be arrested and charged.

Furthermore on identification due process would end up with these idiots given exclusion orders which would mean arrest if they go near the playing field.

Only low-life from the areas of Lordshill, Millbrook & Redbridge could be caught up in something like this. My mind boggle's as to what's going to be the next Headline from these areas. Trouble is now there is so much trash in this country from kids having kids and couldn't care how their brought up that it's so much out of hand i don't think anyone can put it right. No wonder more people emigrated last year than any other year. Unfortunately it will eventually be all the descent folk going and we're be left with all the trash of society. What a future i hope that maybe i won't be around here by that time either. Agree with the other too just let the Helicopter land and sod who's in the way.
Another clear minded woman, fed up with the trash that has destroyed her society. No excuses for the parents, no blaming the teachers, no blaming anyone but the kids that have kids. Spot on!
There are many of us out here that feel the same. I'm afraid we all have one, two, three and so on families living somewhere within our community. Unfortuantely Millbrook etc have more than else where. As long as the kids are not under their parents feet the parents couldn't care less where they are let alone what their doing. As long as there all happy claiming their benefits (most of that fraud) smoking their pot and drinking their booze thentheir in there own little happy lazy world. To hell with the rest of us out there working and paying our taxes to keep them in comfort Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhh
Sublime. A real woman, with more guts than most of the so called men on this site, who look for excuses for the lowlife vermin infesting our lives.
Yeh it takes real guts to continually post your opinions anonymously on the Internet, doesn't it

Ooooh, i think we've hit kenny the ****'s problem.

He struggles to cope with women that are stronger willed than him.

Get over it sunshine. There are women out there, that have been dealing with limp dicks like you for years.

Just remember this, if you think for one second, appeasing the young filth that infect the ghettos of this town, holds any weight with REAL women that have the gumption to stand up to them, you may aswell go home and lock the door of your hen-pecked existence and lose the key.

Another genius who thinks he can tell something about someone from a couple of posts on the Internet. Just what the world needs. Ever heard of projection? You sure do it a lot. Go get laid, for the sake of your health, you angry little man
Kenneth dont bother with this troll, he is a nasty piece of work believe me he is the scum of the earth, dont entertain him.

Easy way out of this argument between the so called adults out there, if you got kids bring them up right, if you cant then let the helicopter fly upside down and take the little TW**'S Heads Off, bloody Vermin

Apparently as the rugby team were training tonight the air ambulance came in supported with a heavy police presence and the helicopter landed with no problems. It's nice to see the police took note of the problem and did something about it.

You couldn't be more wrong on your judgement of me, i am infact happily married for the last 18 years and yes to the same man. If you remember reading my first post of today you will see i expressed my own views. Or are you too doped up or drunk to remember. Purely from a onlooker view. It seems clear that rockandroll has outed kenneths fear of a strong woman.

    kenneth previously wrote;

" Another genius who thinks he can tell something about someone from a couple of posts on the Internet. Just what the world needs".

    kenneth then wrote to Lynne;

" Try new "thinking for yourself" you daft bint, rather than blindly siding with the first man who sides with your sorry, saggy @rse"

    and;

"Strong women! Pah! Easily swayed women you mean. Silly cow".

Now i think it is safe to say you have done exactly what you accused rockandroll of.

You really do have a problem with women it seems kenneth. Is the little man syndrome eating away by any chance???

No need to answer, though maybe an apology to Lynne for the vile attack could in a small way help with your rehabilitation.

Lynne has more get up and go in her, than any of the spineless puke, which systematically back up the sc"m of this city.

Why is it you can't stand a woman that has strength, it kills you to think she actually despises this filth.

She's obviously a working woman with GOOD values. Get over it, you sad tosspots.

Oh **** off rock and roll when have you ever stuck up for a woman? only when she agreed with you, i have been on the recieving end of your comments so dont play the angel with me you moron, you have a hate for women prob cos you cant gat one you freak.

So Rock and Roll's eacaped from the attic yet again! I apologise for his abuse, he doesn't understand the real worl having been kept from it so long. You must understand, when his mum dad/brother and sister caught him ages five with his two year old sister in what we shall refer to as, well, an uncomfortable picture, we found it best to keep him isolated.
wE can all guess what good old Lynne looks like, a troll would be too fine a name. You know she's got a saggy arse, anyone with a view point like her's is a world away from real work.
Rock and Roll is her fantasy man! If she works so hard why is she commenting throughout the day?
As for watching with intersest. NOB.
So obvious, didn't pick up the contradictions of his heroes.
One and the same, Lynne, Rock and Roll and old numb nuts.
As Loyd Grossman would say, "lets have a look at the evidence".
Rock and Roll has been kept away from society for along time, apart from his brief escapes, so has a deluded view of the world. Lynne claims to have been married 18 years. Now she claims to agree with old **** head, yet as the majority who comment, whether they agree with his claims or not, accept rock and roll is deffo without a partner. Therefore Lynne is unlikely to have been with someone for 18 years. And if they were so lucky, someone so distorted would be like a prune and therefore wouldn't have the pert arse she proclaims to have.
Rock and Roll, whether male or female, you're a psychologists wet dream. Ogling kiddies in their swimming costumes and flitting between being a man and a woman is the least of your worries.
I implore the public to have some pity, his homelife is messed up to say the least, his parents are his mother, auntie, sister, brother father, uncle. It's all rather complicated, So please, if you can find it in your heart, forgive him.
Get back in the attic, here's some more fish heads.

And to make matters worse you've got some patronising prat judging everyone else thinking he's amlitle better.
That's what's wrong with society, nay answers.

Totaly agree, Nice one Gerry, obviously a man with a good upbringing & a clear concience & respect for people, but we still need to clean our streets of the VERMIN that are out there day & night intimidating law abiding workers & tax payers who are funding their every day weekends, I rest my case. Still agree with you though Gerry.

3 points here, Surely as air ambulance was introduced some time ago thought should of been put in place as to the best place as to where it is to land, coupled with the increasing desire for all to drive cars .. the obvious place has to be in the hospital grounds, as stated before, the car park is far too small and too low, so extend up top floor to make a heliport.
