Scores of beach huts damaged in raid
TWENTY-six beach huts were damaged in an overnight attack by would-be thieves.
Police are appealing for information after damage was caused to the huts at Calshot beach last night.
Officers say 24 of the huts were broken into although nothing appears to have been stolen from inside. An attempt has been made to break into two others.
Police Constable Adrian Woodhead of Hythe Safer Neighbourhoods team said: "Considerable damage has been caused to the huts to gain entry; it appears a tool has been used to rip off the doors at the front of the huts. I would estimate the cost of repairs to all the beach huts to be in the region of two thousand pounds.
"I would like to speak to anyone who was at the beach yesterday evening or early this morning, particularly anyone fishing or walking their dog. They may have information which could assist the investigation"

As a beach hut owner at calshot who has had his property damaged many times i feel qualified to comment on this.
It makes your blood boil when you see what has happened to your hut but there is also another side to this.
The kids who are placed in council/ housing association accomodation at Calshot are bored out of their minds. There is absolutely nothing for them to do. No playground, football pitch, youth club...there's not even a shop anymore.
None of this justifies the vandalism but surely it's inevitable if you don't offer them an alternative way of having fun and seeking thrills. They have an incredible sports facility on their doorstep (Calshot Activities Centre) but it's unlikely that their parents can afford to let them use it often.
Maybe if the kids felt that society cared enough to give them a playing field then they may not be quite so angry and destructive.

The open spaces I played on, or where I climbed trees have long since been either desecrated in the excavation of gravel, tarmac/concreted over or built on.
As kids don't have a vote, they are last in the pecking order when it comes to providing facilities, and then we wonder why there is this problem. The problem was highlighted when the foreign seaman lost his life in Fawley, thanks to local yobs, and while the authorities expressed their shock and horror, there is little evidence that any lessons have been learned.
You ask whether parents know where their children are. Mind rarely knew where I was, but in those days, there was a community, and if I was having a crafty cigarette with my mates, my parents seemed to know before I had even reached home, and we had no phone!

Spending 100s £s on our kids at xmas and birthdays.Turning a blind eye to their far too regular under age drinking etc
It's no good blaming the kids, a baby hasn't much of a concept of anything,it learns from it's surroundings.This lack of respect is something that society has taught our kids.
WE are society and if it's falling to pieces it's because WE have allowed it. WE have allowed ourselves to be lead by weak politicians...the list goes on and on.
But what do we do about it? Sod all!
We go to work and moan about it to each other on tea breaks.
If one of your workmates decided to take a day off and go to London on a rally and campaign against all the above, would you go?
Nope, most of us wouldn't bother, we would just snipe behind their backs about them being naive to think it will change anything.
Personally i think we, as a society, have got just what we deserve... and i'm as bad as the rest of you.
When are we going to stand up and say 'enough is enough'?

But the MAJORITY of children do know the difference between right and wrong, however a MINORITY of people show no respect whatsoever.
To some extent I agree with the MP who said the Lad-Mag culture is part of the problem, also the TV programmes which seem to put the "cheeky" criminal on a pedestal and berate other characters as "do-gooders". This along with the bad-news bulletins from every corner of the planet, which makes crime and violence seem the norm.
This means that until changes are made at the highest level that sadly the Dennis the Menaces are always going to beat the Walter Softees.

This has nothing to do with boredom. It's sheer bad-mindedness and lack of respect for people and their property.
Kids today have more to do than any of us did in the past - their own TV, DVDs, Computers, Games Consoles etc.
They need to be taught respect and responsibility.
No easy answers on that I'm afraid, but it needs to start in the home and unfortunately most of the kids that get in trouble do so because they have parents who are of the same ilk. So the spiral is ever downwards.
This has nothing to do with boredom. It's sheer bad-mindedness and lack of respect for people and their property.

Anybody that spends so much money for a shed on piece of waste ground near a car park deserves what they get. If you havent got a good idea what to spend all your money on then maybe donating it to the local council to build facilities is a good idea.

Doesn't Beach Hut Owner realise that there is also private housing in Calshot - children in those homes are subject to poor facilities with nothing to keep them occupied either - so why do you make out that it is Council House kids that are to blame for this destruction? Privately housed children are not angels. So before you make assumptions about people who live on council/housing authority estates think again - we are not bad apples, we are decent law abiding people.

I guess that the reason for their poor results starts in being brought up with a total lack of supervision, by a parent who thinks that teachers should teach everything from table manners, right from wrong, respect for others as well as the basic three R's.
Still, if they are being sent to Fratton Park, they will see the benefits of being amongst winners rather than amongst losers.
They will then realise that going to SMS means going Dutch, but is no treat.
