Jan seeks two signings for Saints
Jan Poortvliet
Jan Poortvliet

JAN Poortvliet has revealed he is on the lookout for two new signings - a replacement for departed defender Andrew Davies and a new striker.

Centre-back Davies, last season's Daily Echo Fans' Player-of-The-Year, completed his move to Premier League new boys Stoke City yesterday for an undisclosed fee.

Davies's sale is the latest move by cash-strapped Saints in their bid to slash the wage bill. The same motive was a major factor in the recent decisions to send strikers Marek Saganowski and Grzegorz Rasiak out on loan to Danish side Aalborg and Watford respectively.

And Saints head coach Poortvliet is now searching for both defensive and attacking replacements to increase his options.

Poortvliet is well aware of the constraints placed on him as he goes about that search, due to Saints' current financial position.

But he remains confident that he will still be able to bring in the players he feels he needs.

He said: "Andrew is gone now and you need someone in the centre-half position because at the moment we haven't got a lot of people capable of playing there. We are also looking for a centre forward. We need to find a goal-scorer."

Lets hope he brings in the right players.

Full backs wouldnt go amiss either ;)

Poortvliet had better hope that Rupert picks the correct players for him then. I doubt that Jan will have much say in who he can and can not sign. And where are all those quality loan players that Lowe promised us? I see that Derby are signing Arsenal youngsters, why can't we?

rupert lowe pick something good?
i'd love to see that day, i thought i'd seen it when he left the club but no. he just had to go f*** that up and come back and cause even more complete and utter chaos at the club when it was already in deep enough sh** fighting a relegation battle. we just need to get a whole new board, one that knows what they're doing and isn't in it for the money. someone who actually knows what they're doing. biggest mistake i believe was letting nigel pearson go, courtesy of rupert lowe. i have sat by and thought things will get better, and kept supporting them as things kept getting worse and worse, and now enough is enough, get rid of every pinheaded idiot in the entire board and bring in someone with even a slight bit of football common sense!
come on you saints!!!

Makes good economical sense, players on "big money" not playing..his main signing Wooton not in starting line up and he JP wants a defender and striker..pay peanuts you get monkey's. Lowe thanks for killing our club!

The problem is that the loan players from the top clubs 'albeit nippers are on good contracts and their weekly wages are out of our league.

dont expept anything special

Nugent is on £35,000 a week at Pompey. Saints can afford to pay him £35 per week (plus free use of Rupert's gentleman and swingers club).

According to The News, Nugent wishes to continue his career in football, which would appear to rule out a loan move to 'The graveyard of football'.

I thought Wayne Thomas was a centre half and also that Wotton & Schneiderlin could play there as well, so strange that JP wants to sign a centre half and not two full backs which are currently lacking.

We will be signing a left back to replace Surman soon who is off to Reading - Ian Harte is at Staplewood this week and he will be signed as the new left back!

I thought Harte was at Wolves, a good player desperate for a club I suppose. Alan Bennett's at Brentford but has been told to find another club by Reading. I thought Anthony Pulis was coming as part of the Davies deal?

Graham, as these negative comments seem to upset you so much, why do you bother reading them? They are just comments at the end of the day, I seriously doubt they have any impact on people either supporting or not supporting Saints. Certainly won't have any impact on how our beloved Chairmen run the club. Certainly won't effect the players either, as most of them struggle to use a computer or even read.

I think it's good news that we're going to be making a couple of signings. Makes sense to clear out the bigger earners and bring in someone we can afford. I'd rather they sorted the finances out than we end up starting next season in League 1 with -15 points!

I just wonder why people bother.

You either support the Club at a very difficult time or you don't and as I have said on a number of occasions i have a need to fight against stupidity, bigotory and intolerance - particulary when aimed against a great Club like ours.

I see them as the real enemy within.

Conspiracy theory or what.

A bit unkind about our footie players - struggle to even read?

Perhaps their Agents do all the difficult stuff for them!!

Good news that the club can afford a couple of new players...... Will they be to cover two players leaving though? Andrew Davies is obviously one, but will Surman go too? If not, who else will make room for a new player?

I would imagine anybody new coming in would be loanees not actual bought-and-paid-for players. Not that that will make a difference in quality.

I think the focus at the moment has to be right & left-backs. If Surman does go, who have we got?? Skacel will be going I'm sure (call me cynical but it's funny he's injured so close to the end of the transfer window........) so that doesn't leave anybody! We have enough strikers, they just need a bit of experience. That's why we have to keep hold of Stern John and even Bradley.

Anyone know what's happening with Dyer recently? Was he at the Fun Day yesterday??

Intolerance works both ways, you seem intolerant of other peoples views as well.

You must be pretty naive to think that Saints are any different to every other club in the country. I bet even though Pompey are having the best time in 50 years, they still have some fans moaning about this or that.

Football fans moan, always have, always will.

Just that now, we have the wonderful internet so anyone can post anything and strangely, just because it's a written word and on a website, some people seem to add gravitas to it that shouldn't exist.

I am Positive that Saints will be relegated.

Forgot to add, I'm simple as well and I think to myself - wouldn't it be really great if you opened up the site and saw an intelligent debate on who we might be signing and where they would play.

Constructive, supportive comments with a bit of quality debate would work wonders for Club morale (apart from the players who apparently can't read)

Only Saints could sell a perfectly good centre back and then go on the record as searching for a centre back!! If you didn't laugh you'd cry. Very soon we will be selling a perfectly good left wing-back and searching the market for another.

There is logic in this situation if you live in a cuckoo's nest.

The sums have been done.
To get the books to balance we have to sell.
We cannot offload some of our other higher earners, no-one wants them (on their terms).
Davies wanted to leave to play Premiership football, he does not have faith that within his two year contract he would have seen that here.
We now have the possibility of bringing in two players for the loss of one, I will wait and see who (if any) come in before I judge.
I suspect Lucketti may be back (Wages?), same as Perry, on a short term contract.
A striker? There must be many like Bentner and Campbell who would love the chance to prove themselves.
Davies is a great center but watch his lack of pace kill him in the Prem. He is a Champ player, and a very good one, but too expensive for us now.
We may struggle against Derby, but for our home games we really need to be behind the team. Especially in the second half if we flag.

First Saga, then Raziak now Davies. Who's next 'Drew' . You're not going to fill any seats or sell any sesson tickets if you keep on sell your best player to other clubs now are you Mr lowe. It in my eye's is shot sighted and not good buiseness sence, Yes Southampton Leisure holdings PLC is loosing £5m a year and that they need to ballance the books but selling players is not the way forward. The club has the permission to be bank roled if needed. So why can't the board just focus on getting into top flight football and then sort out the dept that they owe. At this stage of the sesson and where we are going to end up is not in the premier league but in league 1 and in the hands of the creditors like bournemouth fc. The price of the shares are in falling week in week out. So why Mr lowe do you think you're the right man to guide the club in the right direction?
Posted by: Richie, Germany on 12:18pm Wed 20 Aug 08
I can set you all at ease - i have used the club 'guaranteed' answer service and can assure you all that the club made it quite clear we would have to sell players this summer so don't complain now. We are all treated very well and not ignored by the club.

Closing half the ground is to save 100k which cannot possibly be made up by selling 4,000 more tickets over the season and if we further reduced prices that would be a gamble which we cannot afford to take. Don't even dare suggest perhaps selling half our team and playing the youth team is a gamble - Rupert doesn't think so.

I am so happy now - it is all paranoia to feel badly treated or ignored.

We are not going bust at all - we are going up and we can even sell a few youth players at Christmas to pay for the turkey.

HAPPY DAYS - WE ARE SAINTS - WE HAVE THE BEST BOARD IN THE WORLD

Really helpful. It looks like the facts from Reading are similar to the financial facts from SFC.

Madejski says "The difference between being here and being in the Premiership is a £22m deficit and we still have an enormous squad of players.

"Over the past three years we've spent everything that we've had - as everybody does.

"We try to do the best we can and we have a great model, but we're not wallowing in a lot of cash, I assure you of that.

"We've sold 14,000 season tickets and I'm delighted about that, but it pales in significance compared to last season.

"We have to cut our coat according to the cloth, and it ain't that good."

Liverpool have sent us a loanee every season fo the past 3 so maybe one of Jan's signings will come from there.

The best way for Saints to be able to pay for better players and get automatic promotion etc. is to stop paying the bills and loans, accumulate the monies they earn over the season and then use it to buy a good squad for the next and as a result will be promoted in that season and in the Premiership for the 10/11 season

"We are also looking for a centre forward. We need to find a goal-scorer."

Take a look at the above quote from JP and answer the following question.

If you were Stern John and your goals, last season, had saved SFC from relegation, what would your response be to the above comment?

I know English is JP's 2nd language, but surely he should be intelligent enough to realise how this type of comment could be interpreted by his players?

Just a few extra words, such as "to compliment the strikers we already have etc", would be enough to keep his current strikers happy. Unless, of course, he wants SJ to leave?? High earner?? Not young?? Doesn't fit the game plan of youth players??
It wouldn't happen, would it?? Naaaaaaaa not at SMS.

Even McGoldrick, after scoring consistently throughout pre-season and since the season started, must be looking at that and thinking, WTF?

once again we have sold an excellent young player, and for a lot less than I believe hes worth, lets hope there is a sell on clause. Ive said it before, we are going to struggle, and presumably we have to keep selling because of the finances. But lets not forget one thing, for those who actually go these youngsters are playing good football, and with his limited budget Portvliet is responsible for that. So ask questions of the board, hope someone comes in to bail us out, but please give these youngsters a chance, they could surprise us. - oh yes shame on you for the donkey bit on perry and svenson, if the whols side had their guts and spirit wed be top of the league COYR

I'm sure JP will have a very big say in who gets signed, the only constraint will be the money situation.

I know English is JP\'s 2nd language, but surely he should be intelligent enough to realise how this type of comment could be interpreted by his players? Just a few extra words, such as \"to compliment the strikers we already have etc\", would be enough to keep his current strikers happy. Unless, of course, he wants SJ to leave?? High earner?? Not young?? Doesn\'t fit the game plan of youth players?? It wouldn\'t happen, would it?? Naaaaaaaa not at SMS. Even McGoldrick, after scoring consistently throughout pre-season and since the season started, must be looking at that and thinking, WTF?
I agree, John, McGoldrick, BWP and even our youngsters Paterson and White must be thinking 'WTF - give us a chance and we'll do what we can!!!

Pathetic comments from a manager I was starting to think might just knock this bunch into shape.

How do you suggest Saints pay the wages of these players then? You agree the club is losing money and and needs to balance the books, do you also know we only have the backing of the bank if we manage to stick with financial targets impossed on us by the bank?

Maybe JP has spoken to the players who might be worried to give them reasurances?

Seats for the Blackpool match are £26. Programmes are £3. I am going to ask if I can sit on a programme.

Unfortunately the only people who know just how bad the financial plight of SFC is, are those few that are privy to the information, such as the bank and the board.

Only history, as in the release of the relevant documents detailing how the PLC has been run during this period, will reveal whether or not Mssrs Lowe & Wilde are selling players to save the club from going into administration or for any other purpose.

Equally unfortunate is the manner in which Mssrs Wilde & Lowe are perceived by many of the supporters of SFC.
With Mr Lowe's past record of selling players, despite going on record as saying the players in question were not for sale, it is understandable that many would now question the reasons for making the recent sales.

I just hope to God he is not exploiting our current situation for his own purpose and to fulfill a wish to fill the team with as many products of "his" academy, as he can, to justify the money he has previously spent on it.

***BREAKING NEWS***'Southampton Football Club is to host the football equivalent of the X Factor at St Mary's Stadium in a fortnights time in what is said to be a last minute bid to find a centre forward, the judging panel comprises of the unlikely trio Club Chairman Rupert Lowe, along with Saints legends Ali Dia and Agustin Delgado. The lucky winner will earn himself a 3 year contract at the struggling Championship club and it is hoped that revenue from the event will pay for both the player and his wages for his first 3 years. A number of key players from the Blue Square Premiership have been linked with the event who are hoping for a chance to save a once great club, it is rumoured that some of these players may have to take a pay cut in order leap frog up the leagues and have their chance in the spotlight. Chairman Rupert Lowe commented, “I’m thrilled, I don’t know why we haven’t done this before” the event will take place on Saturday 30th August at 5pm after the home match against Blackpool and tickets will be priced at £50 for adults and £40 for children, voting call charges are to be confirmed on the day’

I don\'t think Wolves offered him a contract.
Wolves offered him a month to month contract, but I believe he turned it down. Would welcome Harte as we're lacking experience at the moment. Hope Surman stays though. Don't want Anthony Pulis here, he's sh*t! Alan Bennet did well for us, after a terrible start, but would also have him back. Maybe we can get some talented Dutch kids in.

Costa,

Yes I know only those privy to the information know the actual extent of the situation we face, however it is quite possible to put together a fairly accurate picture of the situtation from what we see happening, high wage earners being moved out etc. Work in finance for a few years and you see how these things come together and how the banks call the shots. I don't believe for one minute that certain players being sold was a decission of the board, it has the bank written all over it, I think the board had in mind to sell certain players but as they have not (yet) been sold the bank has got involved and reminded the board of its commitments. I might be wrong but thats how I read it using my experience from working in finanace.

For the picture going forward we can look at the recent profits warning that was issued to the stock exchange, this may prove to be wrong if the fanancial situation can be improved or if things deteriorate but it can be used as a useful guide.

I cannot believe that we looking to bring in a new striker straight after letting two go on season long loans. If its because we cant afford their wages then fine, but these were two players that weren't even getting in the starting eleven. so if we cant afford to keep them and there not firt team players then what the hell are we going to replace them with??

Things are bad. I handed over £52 at the ticket office today and said 'Two please.' The girl said 'Would you like the goalkeeper and a striker?'
