Hampshire man killed in Bristol is named
Simon Bampton
Simon Bampton

THE Southampton man killed in a Bristol street has been named.

Simon Bampton, 28, died in hospital after being punched by a passing motorist.

It is believed Mr Bampton - a glazier from Thornhill - was punched once, fell to the floor and hit his head on the pavement in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police have launched a murder inquiry into the attack which happened at 2.30am as Mr Bampton and another man were walking in the city centre when they were involved in an argument with the driver of a car.

Police and ambulance crews attended the scene and he was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Police yesterday closed the surrounding streets while officers conducted a fingertip search.

Police officers are now appealing for witnesses.

Avon and Somerset Police are liaising with Hampshire Police on the investigation.

Detective Superintendent Andy Williams of Bristol CID said: "I am urging the person responsible for this offence to come forward.

"This may have been a spur-of- the-moment action and it's very possible they did not realise the seriousness of the assault. Therefore I am appealing to their conscience to contact us immediately."

"We are following a number of lines of inquiry, particularly CCTV footage, and it would be better for all concerned for the person responsible to speak to us sooner rather than later."

Police are also keen to speak to a taxi driver who was seen nearby at the time.

Det Supt Williams added: "Again, it is possible that this taxi driver did not realise how serious this assault was and we urge them to speak to us as they could be a vital witness."

How very sad my thoughts are with the family, my son was involved in a road rage incident too and he dialled 999 and 8 hours later the police turned up. I hope they arrived quicker in this incident or is it just Hampshire police.

    Another needless death.
    Tragic for the family concerned.
Wouldn't it be fantastic if we really could be a tolerant society? If we could go out and drink sensibly. If we did not re-act to petty incidents with violence. If we really could educate our young and create a future generation that has respect for self, each other and for society.
    Condolences for the family.

Well, judging from the bad press that Bristol has generated recently, I certainly wouldn't be wandering around the City centre at 2.30am. unless I had a VERY good reason.

Whatever you muppet. Hardly the same as a man being killed. All calls to the police are graded therefore your sons incident couldn't have been an emergency so pipe down.

I couldn't begin to understand what hurt and pain family and friends are feeling right now. This is a horrific thing to happen , and I hope they find the evil scum who has caused all of this hurt. I go to college with Amanda so if you get to read this, I'm thinking of you. They will catch the b*sta*d. Sweet dreams Simon.
