Tommy is axed by Original 106

MOTORMOUTH DJ Tommy Boyd has been axed from Original 106 after just eight months at the radio station, the Daily Echo can reveal.

The breakfast show presenter who is known for his controversial morning rants and strong opinions joined the south coast broadcaster in January but is the first high-profile casualty of a station shake-up by new owners.

Despite his contract being abruptly ended, the 55-year-old said the split from Original was a happy one and was due to changes at the station.

"I've had a very good time at Original and enjoyed working with the staff and the listeners," he said.

"My departure is a happy one from the station and I'm moving onto pastures new."

Tommy will be leaving behind the weekday 7am to 10am slot on the station, which was launched as a new alternative music station for adults across the south two years ago.

Known for being outspoken during previous shows on local BBC radio, Tommy challenged public opinion earlier this year by arguing that people should stop running marathons because they were producing more carbon dioxide than running a car.

His departure is part of a series of redundancies and changes at the station which was taken over by Celador Radio Broadcasting, a new branch of the Celador production company responsible for TV shows Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and All Star Mr and Mrs.

The company bought Original 106, whose studios are in St Mary's Place, Southampton, from Canadian media giant Canwest Media for an undisclosed fee two weeks ago.

New managing director Kevin Stewart said that the loss of Tommy and other DJs was no reflection on the broadcasters at the station but they wanted to move Original in a new direction' to bring in more listeners.

"Tommy is an excellent broadcaster and he has a good team at Original. We wish him well in his future career but we have decided to end his contract.

"We took over two weeks ago and we are looking to move the station into a new format. So there will be some more changes that are still in the planning stages," he said.

It is thought other presenters could go as part of the shake-up.

Tommy will continue to host Original's breakfast show for the next four to five weeks as the details of his departure are organised.

He will then continue to make his voice heard across the airwaves as he looks to broadcasting across different formats.

"I'm heading to Sussex where I will be working in new media.

"I don't want to call it Internet radio because that conjures up images of geeks in their bedroom," he said.

"It will be a bit different to Original in that there will be more speech and a little less music,'' he said.

God help Sussex. I assume "controversial" here is a euphemism for stupid irritating little prat.

With this story and the news that Fiona is leaving, I make that a good dau for independent broadcasting!

good riddance, his stupid CO2 theory was a good enough reason to sack him, whether he was joking or not.

I never liked Tommy Boyd... as Radio 1 has the stronger pull in the mornings. I much prefer drive time on Original.

'New managing director Kevin Stewart said that the loss of Tommy and other DJs was no reflection on the broadcasters at the station but they wanted to move Original in a new direction' to bring in more listeners. '
So that's it then..Original is probably going to play the same old 80's dross as every other commercial station on the south coast?
As someone who drives all over the country for a living i am very pleased to get back within reception of Original and hear music that is rarely given airplay.
It was good fun while it lasted..know doubt they are digging out the Toploader, Duran Duran, Beyonce, Madonna etc MP3s right now in readiness..ho hum..

he started a campaign to convince people that joggers are damaging the environment more than cars because they produce more CO2 than cars.

He was obviously taking the michael but some retards actually took him seriously.

I had great debate with people on that story

Good Point. At least Original tried to offer something slightly different musically. Every other provincial commercial station plays the same safe dull subset of songs played by every other commercial station. Even the absurd and pointless Radio Solent thinks that the license payer's interests are best served if it sounds more like Wave 105. Luckily I only listen to Radio 3 these days - makes me drive slower.

What a plonker, do you read a story before you comment, or do you just read comments other people have made.

why are there so many radio stations around here that play the same old rubbish you couldnt even find at oxfam record shops?

the music played by bbc solent, original 106, wave 105, radio hampshire 107.8 are all the same OLD rubbish....

why cant there be a radio station for the listener who likes to listen to music from this time of year?

as much as i hate to say it power fm is the best station around here i think. (even if it is a skate station)

only ever listen to radio hampshire for the competitions

otherwise its radio1 all the way

Tommy will know who I am - best to retire now and join one of those shopping channels on Astra, together with opening refurbished fast-food outlets.

Fingers crossed Tommy gets another job in radio elsewhere. Have never really listend to Original but seeing the pic, he definately has a face for radio!

I have just bought an Internet radio for £50. With 13,000 stations to choose from, I should be able to find something to my taste.

If Original is going to have the same playlist as Wave, Solent, etc, will it renamed Unoriginal?

He'll be on Original 106 on Monday morning.

Praise the lord there is a god after all.
The utter inane nonsense spouted by this buffoon makes Original unlistenable during his watch.

Broadcasters ignore the Ofcom (nee Radio Authority) rules - look what happened to Jazz FM in London.

At 6.18am this morning they played Toploader ...it didnt take long for the rot to set in did it?

James Whale? They won't get him - he's got a new job flogging tat on Bid-up dot TV. Commercial radio in the UK is, almost without exception, something to make one weep. I dream of the day when Power; Wave; Ocean; Quay and all the other sound-the- same broadcasters, just clear off and give us some peace. R2 is the nation's favourite station - and not without reason.

The echo is quick to report other people loss's etc, when will it be reporting about its own redundancies and outsourcing to india?

I'll never understand this country. People say they don't like something, so they go and do it just to complain about it.

i don't like shopping channels on the tele - so i don't spend all day watching and then complaining.

sounds to me like someone has an agenda towards the echo too.

I think that Tommy Boyd is one of the best presenters in that genre of watered down 'shock jocks'

He was superb on Talk Radio (Talksport) and a good wind-up merchant (like me on a lower level)

James Whale was the best Talksport figurehead and sacked for political expediency.

Dumbing down is spreading throughout the land.

I'd rather listen to Messrs Boyd, Whale and co than have to endure inane verbal diarrhoea that gets spouted by most radio 'personalities' an oxymoron if I ever heard a description.

As for the photo? It's a PUBLICITY shot you numpties and produced to give some idea of what Boyd is all about.

Just get back to your boring Smashing & Nicey clones that rule the airwaves.

I think that this is sad news, maybe who ever replaces Tommy will be able to explain the principles of 'irony', and the 'challenging of conventional wisdom' to those who have commented negatively here. I suggest you find out where he is broadcasting next and keep listening until you get it!

I finally finad an appropriate, entertaining and thoughtful breakfast show to wake up to and what happens? It disappears. Wake up this morning and start wondering where the DJs are. Replaced by an automated message between songs of a replacement radio station at the end of the month called theCoast106!?!

So I switch on the computer and see what is happening, read this article and others, indicating that Original is gone.

In direct reference to this article, Tommy Boyd stopped and made us think. His humour waas brilliant, as one of the rare radio broadcasters who make me laugh out loud whilst I'm driving. Not for everyone's tastes I agree, but if he was then it would not have been what Original were trying to aim for.

Guess I should have listened a little closer yesterday - somebody must have mentioned it - I must have missed it.

Cursed by being too high brow without making it obvious. I fell in love with his style on talk radio with his statement "Nurses, over paid and under worked.I doubt anyone will call on this one, it's just true isn't it?" Laughed so hard i nearly messed my scrubs!
