Temporary rink wins planning permission
THE final hurdle has been cleared for the return of a temporary Christmas ice rink to Southampton.
Council planners yesterday gave the go ahead to transform the forecourt of the Civic Centre into a winter wonderland.
Cousins Entertainment (CE), set up by 1980 Olympic gold medallist Robin Cousins, won permission to build the temporary ice rink, announced earlier this year.
CE operations director Alan Abretti, a former British champion, said 50,000 people were expected to take to the ice.
The 20m by 30m rink, which will be run commercially by CE, will have enough room for 200 skaters at any one time.
It will be open from November 21 until January 11, excluding Christmas Day.
Advance tickets, up to £8.50 for adults, £6.50 for children, students, and concessions, and £28 for families for an hour session, go on sale from Monday.
The Civic Centre car park will close and alternative parking options will be made for visitors.
A previous temporary Christmas rink in 2006 at the Guildhall, pictured above, attracted more than 16,000 skaters but made a £60,000 loss for the council because of poor planning and sponsorship.

Don't fear though. The Brick and I are going to rack up 50000 hours of skating time to make sure that never happens.

Woo-hoo! Daily Echo Forum Readers meet-up on the ice rink!
Look! There's Denzil scratching his bum! And Kebab Man giving out frozen extra mayo ice cream on stick, eh? Southy and Paramjit are wearing flowing red cloaks as symbols of the forthcoming Socialist revolution, and The Brick is laughing at George saying "I told you so!!" and "Give us what we want and we'll go away!! Ahahahah!!"
December 12th, be there.

You bang on about every topic as though it is part of your soul, obviously researching things extensively and getting a lot of needless info and facts. But when action is required, such as the ice rink, you seem to be terrified of going anywhere other than your house or library.
What's that all about?

I see that the one in 2006 LOST £60,000. Well iam sick to death of these Councils spending my money on ice rinks temporary or otherwise. Its simple if you want to skate, great, go to Basingstoke or Gosport but dont keep expecting the tax payers of Southampton to keep puting their hands in their pockets to bank roll mnority sports like this. I am Fed up with it. To fund the £60,000 loss two years ago that probably deprived some childrens or Seniors home a part of their care. [bold]YOU WANT IT, YOU PAY FOR IT[/bold]

If you regularly view his postings there is a discernible pattern: the grammar and spelling of an illiterate Welsh sheep farmer with large tufts of hairs growing out his ears who skipped formal education, is replaced by highly articulate, pithy and attractive prose.
Maybe he inadvertently slips between the two extremes?
Maybe he is a University Professor trying hard to disguise this?
Maybe he has several poster IDs and gets their "personas" mixed at times?
This possibility is strengthened by his apparent paranoia that the poster “northy” frequently adopts parallel poster IDs, just to annoy and belittle him?
Have you noticed that too?
I have no clue if there is one or several “northy’s” and see no evidence either way. But he certainly has a bee in his bonnet about “northy” or the “northys”

This superiority is offensive and condescending to all other contributors.
He also has a need , much of the time, to be right, and always has to have the last word. What is all that about? Freud would have the answers.

I don't think its all that offensive. I find it amusing sometimes when he tries his twists and turns to avoid appearing wrong, but it's hard to be offended by something that blatantly exposes faulty reasoning. But mostly, it's hard to find Southy offensive because he's one of the few contributors who pretty much always avoids the rampant [italic]ad hominem[/italic] that pervades these boards. I've had a few enormous disagreements with him that, had he been another poster, would have resulted in a massive amount of name-calling, me being followed around the boards and repeatedly jumped upon with "I'm George I think I know everything" quotes. Happens with a really boring regularity, because a lot of people simply cannot disagree with someone else without taking it personally.
Southy's a curiosity alright, but an on-topic one, and a calm one

Where's the calm exterior gone?
Defensive hogwash.
Still making up porkies.
"Might". "If". All rather conveniently vague.
Big footnote: "now watch the lips", an impossibility.

Come off is, Southy, it doesn't work like that and you know it. He's looked it up, as have I. The ice rink at Tower Park closed down years ago and you know it. Claiming it's there and refusing to accept that anyone else might ever be right about anything is a bit pointless, and saying "go find it", well, now you're just pretending you're flat-out denying. Or have you moved on from custom-fitted definitions of the word "conjecture" to re-defining the word "exists"?
Come on, Southy, there's no ice rink at Tower Park and you know it. Just admit it!

Well, I just phoned Tower Park and asked about their ice rink, and was told that they had one years ago but it's no longer there. Nor is there one in the vicinity. So presumably this is all just some massive conspiracy to keep details of this ice rink secret from everyone, is it?
The defence rests.
PS. The quote "rubbish in, rubbish out" is actually "garbage in, garbage out" and it isn't an IBM slogan, it was a term used by someone who at one point was an IBM engineer, but he really got it from Charles Babbage. If you're gonna hide the truth behind a soundbite, make sure you've got the right soundbite

Unless there's some gateway to an alternative reality at that end of Poole, I'm doubtful it'll yield any new results. There is no ice rink there, it's been confirmed by a real, actual human being who is there, and in a position to know. Not some website you can dismiss as being "wrong" because it's on the Internet. An actual employee of the leisure facility in question. You're making stuff up, pure and simple, and even when caught out on this, you still persist. If there was a way to shake ones head in baffled pity over the Internet, I'd employ it right now. I can only hope that this is mere stubbornness on your part, and not an actual delusion.
So there it is, readers. The reason this ice rink campaign is doomed to failure. Those behind it have repeatedly proven they're not in the least bit concerned with factual information, reality, or truth. Some ice-rink "facts" for you:
1) 5000 people out of 204,000 is a landslide. Those who did not sign the petition, would have, had they not not signed it. Or something
2) The result "7-3" by an ice hockey team is irrefutable proof that an ice rink would be economically viable
3) The word "conjecture" has a different meaning, dependent upon whether it is applied to ice rinks or not
4) Anything other than a flat-out denial of a proposal can be considered a "100% success"
5) Anyone who follows a sport on TV would actively participate in it, if the facility existed in the local area
6) There is an ice rink in Tower Park, Poole. The fact that it has not actually existed for the best part of twenty years is irrelevant. It exists nonetheless, but is being kept a secret by all involved, for reasons that are yet to be adequately explored
7) Anyone who concerns themselves with concrete facts, rather than whimsy, has a negative attitude. Probably linked to the fact that cartoon characters don't realise they're walking on thin air until they actually measure this fact. It's amazing what one can accomplish when one is ignorant of outside limitations. Apparently
8) If one wishes for something hard enough, and ones heart is pure, rational arguments are utterly meaningless
9) The only way a campaign can fail, is if an equal and opposite campaign to the contrary succeeds. Quite how this paradox manifests itself is as yet unknown.
10) The Internet is wrong, except in situations where it can be shown to support an ice rink in Southampton
Quite an amazing amount of denial, really

Sorry Southy, I'm not going on some fools errand because you're in denial.
2) The result "7-3" by an ice hockey team is irrefutable proof that an ice rink would be economically viable

shame you will not take that drive to poole would of been nice to meet you.i even would of paid for your fuel.
1)trouble is a lot people where not in town when the petition was there to be signed and not every one knows that you can do it on line, not that i would trust the figures for an on line petition you seen how the echo site can multiply on posts.and one person can put in multi votes.
2) agree with a hockey result do not proof that an ice rink would be economically viable, but did any one take notice of how many supporters went i hear there was a fair number that did go to watch it.
3)depends maily how you apply it.
4)it is in a way they got want they wanted on the council to find a developers or the council to start listen to developers
5)unknown has to date need one to really to find out.
6)20 odd years ago was when the locals started to complane because they was getting turned away in the evening, george do you want to have a laugh look on the map for tower park and see where it located if they not up dated it i did mail them and told them they got the wrong western road any way they got it located across the road from the docker's family home in the riches square mile in the uk.
7) concrete facts can only be gain after the build is done and in use.look what happen at the town quay when that first open up to the public council and traders said this will be a great for the people of the southampton bring in money for the local people, was soon relize that the town quay project failed, the first traders that went on to the town quay did not stay long.but it is holding it own at the moment for how long who knows.
8)proof will be in the pudding.
8) theres good rational arguments on both sides of the fence,
9)it helps to see a campaign on both sides.and i still think the west side would be better for an ice rink,if it built in the center of town there be to many that would not go,more so those that live out side of southampton places like fordingbridge or salisbury

Southy, there is no ice rink in Tower Park. The only evidence that there is, is you saying so. There's plenty of evidence to the contrary, including verbal confirmation by staff at Tower Park

Southy, ( or should it be “Mouthy” ? )
"Live local' scored a direct bulls-eye.
But even more significantly, "George" your erstwhile buddy and defender, has inflicted the knockout punch.
Your credibility is gone.
What was it, an initial lie you could not admit to, so you wove further lie upon lie?
Or is it that you have a serious inferiority complex and try and compensate for it by parking yourself on a self-constructed lofty throne of Local Knowledge and peer down from it, to rubbish all and sundry who will not accept at face value, your un-sourced claims and outright transparent, whoppers?
A review of your postings makes sad reading.
You are a sad, sad individual.
Any further postings by you will justifiably be treated as suspect and totally lacking in credibility. As will, any postings by your twin ID “Brick”.
You should find another pastime.
Go sit in the library. Read a book on personal ethical behaviour.

It ain't there. I spoke to them. Not a call centre. An actual employee [bold]at Tower Park[/bold]. Why would there be absolutely no way of finding this ice rink, other than by some mysterious directions known only to you? It's not in the back of a wardrobe is it? Fancy some Turkish Delight?

You are pathetic.
Sad, sad excuse for a person.
A fixated liar.
In dire need of mental health intervention.
No further comment. Comments just feed into your bottomless pit of nausiating narcissus nonsense.
Go on. Respond. Have the last word. Always, you have to have the last word. Its part of your mental health problem. Have the last word on me. Whatever you write, I will not read. So your last word will be futile, pointless, other than making you ( falsely ) feel important, powerful. All about power innit, Southy, Mouthy.?
Now you are powerless.

i was refering to the multi names that local use.
any way it dont matter about tower park,i know there is one,i will ask question about it next time i down there.any way look at it like this if theres not one there then that makes southampton ice rink even more viable and more likey to make a bigger profit has this would increase the size of the catchment area

That's 2 stories on the first google page alone. One claims you go to an ice rink in Bournemouth/Poole on a regular basis, the other is from an Olympic hopeful from that same area who can't find an ice rink within 50 miles! Now you're trying to back-pedal a bit here, saying it doesn't matter, and maybe there isn't one after all, but the [bold]first thing you find[/italic] when searching for "poole park ice rink" is you claiming you go there all the time! You're quite clearly making this stuff up! There's little point carrying on the charade any longer

Southy, what are your thoughts on this ice rink at Tower Parks, that nobody else knows about, including the ice skating fraternity of Bournemouth and Poole, Bournemouth Borough Council and Tower Park themselves, but you manage to frequent on a monthly basis?
