Community centre to get further makeover
A COMMUNITY centre in Southampton is to be further spruced up with a revamped multi-use games area, theatre and visual arts facility, new solar panels and improved insulation.
The city council agreed to splash £750,000 more on Freemantle Community Centre after last year ordering refurbishments and extensions to make it more disability-friendly.
A further £950,000 will be earmarked to be spent on similar work at Woolston Community Centre as the final phase of the council's day services modernisation programme. The first phase saw the opening of Nutfield Nursery in Millbrook and a revamp of St Denys Community Centre.
Freemantle ward councillor Jeremy Moulton said: "I spent Saturday at St Denys Community Centre for their family fun day. It's at the heart of the local community and if we can achieve the same thing in Freemantle this will be tremendous."
The latest improvements will be funded by a £750,000 Learning Skills Council grant, plus cash from the £2.5m sale of the Brookside Centre in Auckland Road, and £490,000 to come from the sale of Prospect House.

Someone, somewhere must be raking it in.
I bet all these jobs could be done for a fraction of those figures.
I recall the rebuilding of the toilet block on Weston Shore costing in excess of £300,000. I can do a 5-bedroomed house with swimming pool for less than that (In fact I am doing one for a councillor at the moment.)

Quite appropriate that the industry term for 'multi-use games area' is MUGA and it's being built in Freemantle...

No surprise that Jeremy Moulton has a hand in it. Clearly he sees and opportunity to gain more support. Frankly I hope he does, he's an excellent councillor and will make a much better MP than Alan Whitehead has.
