Keep a beady eye out for jewellery bargains
GLASS, ceramic and wooden
beads can all be transformed into
beautiful handmade jewellery at
a fraction of the cost of the high
street alternatives.
So says jewellery making
expert Joanne Zeng, who runs
the Southampton Bead Shop in
Burgess Road, and has taught
hundreds of people to make their
own necklaces, bracelets and earrings
through her workshops.
Mrs Zeng says that you can create
your own bespoke bracelet
using glass pearl style beads
for just £1.60 - much cheaper
than the M&S version priced at
£5.99.
A handmade pair of earrings
could cost you as little as 50p -
with seven pairs of silver and
gold-plated earrings waiting to
be decorated costing just 30p for
seven pairs at the bead shop.
Jewellery making novices -
and those who are more experienced
and want to learn new
skills - can attend a two-hour
jewellery making workshop for
£10.
With all the materials and
tuition included, novices can end
up with a bumper selection of
jewellery.
Joanne said: "To achieve a new
look, you don't have to buy a
whole new wardrobe. Just look at
the celebrities - use accessories.
Fashion jewellery is playing a
more and more important role in
the fashion industry".
Since opening the bead shop
four years ago Joanne said she
has seen so many people start the
hobby as beginners and who are
now able to make professional lyfinished
jewellery for themselves,
friends and family.
"There are many types of beads
to suit different times," she said.
"From Swarovski Crystal, silver-
foil glass beads, to the more
natural look ceramic and wooden
beads, you can create a delicate
look or chunky style to suit
your needs."
