High hopes for fundraising
Daughter Christine Morris.
Daughter Christine Morris.

IT has been a year in the planning but a group of Southampton sisters hope a thrill-seeking family fundraising day will be a fitting tribute to the mum they loved.

Eighteen months ago the Morris family mourned the loss of their mum Florence, 75, who died of pancreatic cancer, just 11 weeks after she was diagnosed with the disease.

Now, in a bid to raise much- needed funds to help find a cure for the cancer, the family is organising a charity day in her memory.

Christine Morris, 53, who has put the event together with the help of her sisters Jackie Swain, Marilyne Roberts, Darlene Greenstock and Angelene Morris, said: "We wanted to do something to raise money for the charity as it is a cancer that is not so well known.

"We wanted to raise money that specifically went to research for it after we lost our mum.

"It was so quick as unfortunately she didn't have any symptoms until it was too late.

"We said we wanted to do something for it so we started putting this event together a year ago."

The St Mary's community is being called on to support the Albion Towers Family Fundraising Day, which will see a team of daredevils abseil down the side of the landmark flats.

In all 24 volunteers, including Marilyne, are taking on the 43m descent down the side of the 15-storey tower block in Golden Grove throughout the fundraising day tomorrow.

Along with the abseil, which is being organised with the help of Southampton City Council and overseen by instructors from the Woodmill Activity Centre, a host of other money-spinning activities are being staged.

For young adventurers, a seven-metre climbing wall is being put up for those aged eight and over, along with a range of cake and competition stalls including whack the rat, painting competitions and refreshments.

A raffle and auction is also being organised with prizes donated from nearly all the city centre shops, including a day trip for two, tickets to a comedy show, vouchers at leading stores and a photographic package worth £145.

Christine, who lives in Albion Towers and is chairman of the tenants' and residents' association, said: "Along with the money-raising we hope it will be a real opportunity for the community to come together."

The event, which is free to enter, is being opened tomorrow at 10am by Southampton mayor Brian Parnell, and runs until 4pm.

What a wonderful gesture, putting all that effort into organizing this event to both raise funds for a very worthwhile cause and providing entertainment for the local community.

Christine and her sisters deserve medals for this altruistic act.
