It's nearly National Bike Week, but it's always time to get on your bike!
Cycling is becoming more popular in Southampton and the city council is committed to providing more facilities for cyclists as well as having a greater focus on communities.
Why not get your bike out and try some of the city's cycle routes? There are several open spaces that are traffic-free, such as Weston Shore, Riverside Park and the common. And there are cycle training tracks nearby for young people to practise on.
We were part of the Sustrans Connect2 project that went to vote in December 2007. Thank you to all of those who supported the project. This will have a boardwalk along the River Itchen from Horseshoe Bridge, St Denys, towards the former Meridian TV studios.
This will provide a leisure and commuter route along the riverside linking many communities. The route will be part of national cycle route 23, which is open from the airport in the north and runs through Riverside Park.
In the south the route travels past St Mary's stadium and on towards the Town Quay ferry terminals. National cycle route 2 runs from Hythe to Lymington and locally over the Itchen Bridge and along Weston Shore to Netley
We are working in partnership with many agencies to promote cycling, walking and active lifestyles.

The goal is to get more people more active. Visit Active Southampton's website for information about activities and sports.
Under the Active Travel title we work with the Sustrans, Sport England, Southampton City Primary Care Trust, Southampton City Leisure Active Southampton, as well as the universities, education establishments, and sports and leisure providers.
The introduction of cycling and walking schemes will benefit the residents and visitors to Southampton by enabling them to the reduce their use of motorised transport and improve their personal health.
The council offers a range of support to cyclists with local maps, a network of cycle routes, parking facilities, and a road safety team providing advice to the public, schools and businesses on sustainable travel, road safety and cycle training."
