THEY are creepy and crawly and not
everyone's cup of tea but next week
sees the start of a campaign to get to
know insects a bit better.
The Royal Entomological Society is
once again staging National Insect
Week giving
people of all
ages the
opportunity
to learn
more about
the fascinating
creatures.
The awareness
week
will be
launched on
Monday by
wildlife
enthusiast
and TV presenter
Chris
Packham
and Joan
Ruddock MP.
Keeper of
biology at
Hampshire
County
Council's
Museum and
Archive
Service,
Christine
Taylor, said:
"Insects are
fascinating
creatures
and very
important to
the world.
Without
them how
would plants
pollinate or
things decompose? However, they are
not very much liked by a lot of people
so hopefully this week will raise awareness
of the importance of them."
The museum service is hosting a
number of events with a dozen venues
staging insect-related activities.

Along with the organised events people
are being encouraged to do their bit
to help encourage insects in their gardens.
Youngsters can also try their
hand at pond dipping and carrying out
their own insect surveys in their back
gardens.
