THE most detailed map of Southampton ever drawn up has exposed the city's risk of devastating flash flooding.
The remarkable 3D image - accurate to within six inches - highlights the parts of the city most in danger of summer downpours like those that swamped city streets last month.
Environmental experts are warning that heavy storms will be more frequent as climate change takes effect.

Southampton City Council last night called on the Government to help protect the homes, businesses and critical infrastructure most at risk.
See today's Daily Echo for a poster showing the areas of Southampton at risk.
Usual load of alarmist nonsense and fake science.
I bet more was spent putting this map and study together than was spent by the City Council and ABP dealing with the flooding problem on Millbrook Road (the problem that's been there for 30 years).

I work for the water board and Im afraid to say the the flooding in Millbrook Road and the surrounding areas is nowt to do with ABP. The pump houes at the docks are there for ABP's use and not the councils. If the council were to have listened to us, then they wiould have know about the requirement to upgrade the drainage system around the twon expecially Milbbrook, Shirley etc

Scaremongering as usual.
A bit hypocritical of the Council to call on the Government for help, when it is they who give the planning permission to build yet more flats, offices, roads etc and taking away the natural drainage.

It is the duty of local government planning officers to ensure the infrastructure is in place before granting planning permission for yet more flats or houses. If this (central) government spent more time doing their job properly instead of punishing us with so called "green" taxes & creating a religion of global warming they would have legislated to ensure this was carried out correctly.

Let’s face it if Millbrook was to flood perhaps that would be an opportunity to make the ice rink we have been after for so long. Also in the summer we could have our lido back they were the days, ice rink & lido. So it’s not all bad news a chance for Millbrook to disappear altogether and an opportunity for a new ice rink & lido. JOY!!

Constructive thoughts would be much more useful, rather than idiotic remarks like some of the blogs who have a mind set of a'sit at home' mentality.

Looking at the graphic above, it looks like the whole Centenary Quay site is set to be underwater.... at last, we have the reason they're building those high rise tower blocks!

Goard[/quote] hummm constuctive thought, how about moving the container port down between fawley and hythe on that marsh land, where the land rises quickly behide the marsh theres all ready a rail head there in little use,and then return the land to how it was back in the early 60's right up to redbridge quay, and put back the drainage ditch between western docks and rail line, this would go along way in helping the flooding problems in that area.

As above, at last a constructive thought and should be considered - keep going, you could be the pre-decisions of the future - I am not being sarcatic - we need more and learn more if we are native. Best of luck!

i would not worry about dibden bay to much southampton docks only has bough rights and can not cross the city limits,it take the local council agreement to get across that side, and this is the reason why the docks got refused to build docks on that reclaim land, when they applyed to main goverment and got refused permission.
has for beaches up to 1920 some thing there was a beach that ran from the city walls right up to redbridge quay apart from millbook point marsh and again at redbridge ponit

"How about stop using our cars to stop killing the planet and causing this weather shift?"
Presumably then you'll focus on corking the bottoms of all the world's cattle (for a start)? Also sources of poisonous gas!

I would be grateful if someone could define what an "environmental expert" is. Is it (1). a puppet of the politicians, (2) a puppet of the media, (3) someone with a popular (ie easy) degree from a former polytechnic, or (4) someone who is unemployed and has to say he/she does something with their time? I should point out that the UN's committee on climate change were only prepared to say that they were "70% certain that climate change was most likely caused by mankind's activities". This doesn't sound very convincing when a large number of the "committee" had already resigned because of the dodgy science that was being presented as fact.

this is old hat, un now do not belive in this at all now,has there's been no average earth tempeture rise since 1998,due to the fact theres been no or very little sun flare's and the sun flares are not due to start building up again for another 2 to 3 years time

The flux of cosmic radiation is concentrated around the poles, and the coinciding of the magnetic poles with the rotational poles over the next few years is one (only one!) possible explanation for "perceived" climate change. Your posting however serves to reinforce that politicians and the media are propogating flakey science as fact, possibly for their own interests and mischief.

john the sun has a average 11 year run with a 22 year cycle, plus the sun is expanding sooner or later the safe zone around the sun will move out of the earth orbit,it be then when the earth will slowly start to become like venus, another fact thats not included in the flooding is that the moon is moving away from the earth at a rate of 1cm a year, this reduces the hight of a spring tide by 1mm a year, there are lots of facts that dont get included when they should

I was watching a programme on NatGeo channel the other day that said global warming would make England much more temperate; better weather for viniculture and other agroindustries*.
I'm off to buy a Chelsea Tractor....
*Not the kind of 'agro'industry you'd expect from Millbrook I hasten to add....
