Coastal birdlife down due to climate change

CLIMATE change is causing population numbers of Hampshire's birdlife to nosedive, new figures have revealed.

Despite numbers reaching a peak in the 1990s, numbers of waterbirds visiting the county's food-rich estuaries and coastlines during the winter months have dropped.

The worrying figures were revealed in the latest State of the UK's Bird report which also confirmed that the county's birds are laying their eggs earlier than they did 40 years ago.

The report found that dunlin, formerly the UK's most numerous winter wader, is now at its lowest level since records began, down 21 per cent from its 1979/1980 figures.

The Solent and Hampshire coastline is also used by ringed plover during winter, which the report found to have reduced over the same period, by 13 per cent.

It is believed these key species are flocking instead to other countries in Europe for the winter, where conditions are becoming more suitable.

Hester Phillips, from the RSPB, said: "This year's report shows that climate change is with us already and from our gardens to our seas, birds are having to respond rapidly simply to survive.

"As often before - birds are acting like the canaries in a mine shaft and giving us early warning of dangerous change."

Here we go again, climbing on the climate change bandwagon.
Maybe they have just got fed up with coming to Britain and have decided to go elsewhere for their holidays.

See RN Ships logs (National Archive) Ships weather logs (there are thousands) of the 1730s. It is recorded that there was a "spike" where unexplained warming took place. It was, and indeed is known that these "spikes" occur often and naturally. The logs are being studied now, and I am sure will show that this latest - we are all doomed scenario is total nonsense !
