Last Orders for Glass
The Daily Echo campaign, supported by the police, is to encourage late-night bars and clubs in Hampshire to switch from glass to plastic.
Calls to replace glass with plastic in pubs
IT is a fast-growing
crime - with sickening
consequences.
Using a glass or a bottle as a
weapon can cause devastating
injuries that can scar the victim
for life.
That is why the Daily Echo has
launched its Last Orders For
Glass campaign. We are our
calling for late-night bars and
clubs to serve all drinks in plastic
instead of the traditional
pint, half-pint and wine glasses.
In Southampton city centre,
fewer than one in ten nightspots
currently use the virtually
unbreakable polycarbonate containers,
which are durable and
can be used hundreds of times
over.
Today the man in charge of
making sure Southampton's
bars and clubs stick to
the law today has
backed the campaign.
Licensing Sergeant
Stewart Chandler said
he would like to see
more of the city centre's
hundred venues
serve drinks including
pints, wines and spirits
in polycarbonate containers.
He said: "We are
happy to back the
Daily Echo campaign.
We would
support anything
that promotes people's
safety in the city
centre."
With glassing attacks
also involving bottles
being struck across the
face Sgt Chandler recommends
pubs and clubs
use plastic alternatives
wherever possible.
"If a venue is making a
conscious decision to go
polycarbonate then
they should decant
drinks from glass bottles
to polycarbonate
containers."
He added: "The
quality of the polycarbonate
containers is getting better all
the time. They are substantial
products that do not twist or
bend easily.
"Some venues have actually
found the polycarbonate option
to be cheaper in the long term
because the containers actually
last longer than glass."
The campaign has also been
backed by health chiefs.
Southampton General
Hospital's accident and emergency
department treats about
250 glassing victims a year with
many left permanently scarred.

Would it be possible for the Police to object to further licences for drink venues now it is publicly stated that we have more than 100 in Southampton.?
The Government rules conveniently prevent residents from objecting to new licences so the situation is only going to get worse as
venue operators see Southampton as a "soft touch".
The city is well known as a student drinking hole, in fact it is known for nothing else !

Even so, Southampton probably has less pubs per head of population compared to somewhere like Bournemouth, Portsmouth or Brighton.

This is ridiculous! The reactionaries have gone mad. I enjoy a pint, in a glass; plastic is no substitute. GBH is a serious crime and those who commit it should be locked up. That’s the short of it. These thugs (who are actually a pathetic minority) would simply use something else to cause harm. Let’s take it to its ridiculous conclusion: calls to replace sticks and stones with something ‘safer’. Would it solve the problem? Be careful what you think with!

Why not just enforce plastic glasses at pubs which are known for trouble. ie. The townie pubs like Yates etc. The management decide what type of clientelle they want, if they want rough trash then make them serve in plastic glasses, if they choose to encourage the more sophisticated customer, then a glass is more suited.
I ran pubs for many years, and it is the Landlord/Mamager who determines wether the pub is rough or not. When I ran a pub, we allowed no football shirts, no work clothes etc and I can honestly say I never had one fight.
Better management is what is needed not plastic glasses?

I'd imagine there would be about 100 in the city centre, but the fact remains that's no more than you'd find in similar areas of similarly sized cities.
Take Southsea for example (not including Gunwharf and Portsmouth City Centre) and you'll see exaclty what I mean.
The only place Southampton is known as a student drinking hole is in Southampton.

Once again the silent majority will be penalised by the scummy minority chavs.
Poster above makes the sensible point that each pub/club should have plastic glasses if their clientele mirrors it.
Most pubs are just nice little watering holes and why should millions of drinkers have to put up with the plastic invasion?
High st boozers such as Yates, Wetherspoons and their clones need sorting out.
Rule of thumb - if a venue has the need for bouncers, then it follows that they are needed to keep an eye on the potential troublemakers?

Bars and clubs which have had incidents of glass-related injuries should have the use of plastic glasses made a condition of their licence. This is something which I strongly support.

Speaking as an expert on pubs in Southampton (and there aren't any I have not tested), I can confirm there are just under 100 pubs alone within the city centre (including the Bedford Place and St Marys area). If you include night clubs, hotels, restaurants etc (which I don't) that also have a bar in, there must be well over 100. Just out of interest btw, last year, there were 186 pubs in the city as a whole but this figure does not include such premises as nightclubs, hotels, restaurants etc.
Revised stats for 2008 will be compiled shortly.
