Last Orders for Glass
The Daily Echo campaign, supported by the police, is to encourage late-night bars and clubs in Hampshire to switch from glass to plastic.

THE OWNER of a popular bar in Southampton is urging other pubs and bars to follow its lead and switch from glass to plastic vessels.
It is six weeks since Sobar, in Bevois Valley Road, began serving up pints, half pints and wine in polycarbonate containers, rather than traditional glasses.
Staff also offer to pour drinks from lager and cider bottles into the plastic containers to reduce the amount of glass used by customers.
Sobar's owner Neville Virgin is backing the Daily Echo's Last Orders for Glass campaign encouraging Hampshire's late night bars and clubs to serve all drinks in the robust and reusable polycarbonate containers that do not break easily.
He said: "We had an incident last Saturday when some idiot threw their drink over one of the door staff.
"Had they thrown a glass rather than a plastic container the consequences would have been much more serious.
"We swapped just over a month ago because of the number of breakages we were having and the safety aspect.
"It was not only about glassings but glass being left on the floor after breakages.
"Most people are steeped in the glass tradition and it can be difficult to break that but it seems to be working here."
Sobar, a popular haunt for students, chose the type of polycarbonate containers with the help of nearby Commercial Kitchens, which is also based in Bevois Valley Road.
The Daily Echo's campaign was launched after new figures showed that more people were being admitted to Southampton General Hospital following glass attacks than ever before.
Doctors and nurses treat about 250 victims of such attacks every year.
Police, the emergency department and Southampton's new multi-million pound superclub Oceana, due to open later this year, have all pledged their support to the campaign.
A survey shows fewer than one in ten nightspots currently use polycarbonate containers.

"Staff also offer to pour drinks from lager and cider bottles into the plastic containers to reduce the amount of glass used by customers."
So you can still get your lager or cider from a bottle. Like removing the knife from the table and leaving that other deadly weapon, the fork.
Now all we need is for the Echo to launch one of its lame campaigns to ban bottled water and make tap, the water of choice (like the campaign in London at the moment).

I suppose if you're drinking over-cooled, fizzy "lager" it doesn't really matter what it's served in - a plastic bucket would probably be appropriate. But, if drinking proper beer, a glass is much more pleasant. Fortunately, pubs (not bars) which serve a range of real ales rarely (if ever) have the trouble and glassings associated with those who serve fizzy lagers and alcopops.
I hope the Echo keeps its campaign in proportion and doesn't spoil the pub experience for those of us mature enough to enjoy a decent pint without feeling the need for a fight.

Southampton should just ban students altogether they are nothing but trouble, then we wouldn't have to drink from plastic cups.

Denzil, are you just bitter because you could never go to university? I am from Southampton and studied here and it's the best uni around! Students bring in alot of money for the city and we should be proud of the fact that we have two fantastic uni's in our city! Now get off your high horse about students!

When I pay around £2.50 for a beer it better be in a glass!! However when you start to radically discount drinks (which is common in Bevois valley) then there is obviously a need for plastic containers. I don't think that a total ban on glassware in pubs is necessary, what is necessary is ensuring that the venue has the right managers on site monitoring the people in their venues and take appropriate action when needed. Many High street pubs serve glass during the day and when the pub starts picking up at night have the ability to quickly switch to plastic. It is about effective and responsible management of glassware!

uni is a joke and a waste of time if you don't do something worth while!
