Last Orders for Glass

The Daily Echo campaign, supported by the police, is to encourage late-night bars and clubs in Hampshire to switch from glass to plastic.

More backing for plastic glasses campaign

ONE of Southampton's biggest bars has today backed the Daily Echo's Last Orders for Glass campaign.

The Australian theme bar The Walkabout was one of the first in the city to introduce plastic containers five years ago during certain events such as big match days.

Since then the use of these high end plastic - polycarbonate - containers at the High Street venue has grown to include Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings as well as during major sporting events.

The bar has said it would not rule out expanding the use of plastic containers to other nights of the week.

Any decision to do so is up to the manager if, for example, there is a particularly busy weekday night.

Now staff at the bar hope other late night bars across Hampshire's cities and towns will follow the Walkabout's lead.

A spokesman for the chain's Southampton venue said: "Working with the police and local authorities, Walkabout Southampton has voluntarily introduced polycarbonate plastics where we have judged that the risk of having glass in the venue outweighs the downsides of plastic."

Walkabout also serves Smirnoff Ice, Stella, J20, becks, Budweiser, WKD, Foster's and Bulmers Original in plastic bottles d u r i n g we e ke n d evenings and sport events.

T h e chain's spokes man added: "We would also happily replace all glass bottles with plastics if they were available from our suppliers.

"Walkabout takes great pride in being a responsible venue."

Across Southampton fewer than one in ten nightspots currently use the virtually unbreakable polycarbonate containers that are durable and can be used hundreds of times over.

The Daily Echo launched its Last Orders For Glass campaign last month calling for late night bars and clubs to serve all drinks in plastic following a rise in the number of people being admitted to hospital following glassing attacks.

Southampton General Hospital's emergency department currently sees about four or five victims of glassing incidents every weekend - totalling in the region of around 260 patients a year.

Many are left scarred for life because of their injuries.

Can she take out corks and open tins with the metal work on her face ?
Does she do painting with her hair ?

She's a mess. I wouldn't admit to knowing her.....

She makes me nostalgic for the days when facial piercings were rare, the mark of an individual and not in the least bit mundane, run-of-the-mill, or all part of the Individuals Uniform(tm)

Honestly, why would you even comment on somebody's picture. Clearly this is a place to add comments with regards to the article above - and all you sad little people wish to say nothing other then abusive things to a girl who obviously shows individuality and difference. You took the time out to say that? Grow up and go and find some self-worth. This girl is an awesome person and maturity is something you obviously lack.

Yep. Individuality. Just like all the rest of the, ahem, individuals with the same old facial piercings. Yawn. Next

Truely pathetic. Didn't any of you ever get taught not to judge people by what they look like? It doesn't make her a "weirdo" nor any different to anybody else. It is within everybody's own right to look and be who they want to be-and I would guarentee that she is much nicer of a person than any of you sad childish people. Welcome to the 21st century guys, people happen to be different. And I know this girl and to be perfectly frank, she isn't bothered by low-life's who discriminate against what she looks like and what she representents - so I won't continue to bother with you either. Truely pathetic.

The metal used in piercings insnt magnetic you idiot, and so dont attract to magnets or set off airport scanners.

Anyway, nice piercings, i have 3, dont think i would want lots like her, but hey, makes her happy, then good.

As for the article, plastic bottles and such like should be enforced, rather then them being a choice, far too many people being injured these days when glass bottles are used as weapons in drunken fights.

So you can guarantee that she's a much nicer person than any of us "childish people", based solely what we've posted on the Internet about one, very specific, narrow topic? Hmmm. Talk to me about judging by appearances. You wouldn't know, for instance, how much of my monthly salary I donate to charity. But I guess, since I'm to be judged as an @sshole anyway, I may as well cancel those direct debits, no?

I think you're missing the point here, Bhod. I'm not judging her because she looks a bit different, quite the opposite - she looks like everyone. I was full of facial piercings long before this current fashion for it came about. That scaffold that everyone has on their ear now? Myself and my piercer came up with that about 15 years ago, and had to have the jewelry made specially. Nobody else had done such a thing, at least in this region. Now, it's everywhere. Ditto nose piercing, eyebrows, lips, the lot. Once, it was about individuality. It ain't any more, it's a uniform. Long gone are the days when body modification of this nature had anything to do with individuality. Remember when, once upon a time, people paid money to see a heavily tattooed man? Those were the days when body mods were about individuality. Now, it's one of the most conformist things you can do as a young adult

I have to ask: if she isn't bothered by what others think of her (and I challenge that anyway), why are you? Seems to me you've got your knickers in a right twist, coming here shouting the odds and calling us all pathetic because you don't agree with what we say. Isn't that slightly at odds with why you're saying it? She doesn't represent anything, she's just got pink hair and a few very common facial piercings. Big deal. Do what you want, love, but don't kid yourself it's anything other than a fashion decision

Welcome to the 21st century, Bhod. Things are no longer as clear-cut as they were in the last 30 years or so of the last millenium. Sticking a safety pin in your cheek no longer passes as individuality

People who go in for this form of self abuse usually do it for a reaction.

QED

I am more than aware that most youngsters who get suckered into it are 'nice' people but are under the illusion that they will 'stand out from the crowd'

Trouble is - the pierced brigade tend to be part of a 'uniformity' thus defeating the object?

Some of them go ont extreme piercings all over the body - including genital mutilation on male and female sides.

This surely qualifies as needing counselling?

She looks quite attractive without this rubbish - it's usually the ugly ones who resort to this.

Plus - who would employ a battle scarred person? Ok for 'trendy' bars - very few other outlets that need face to face service.
