Charity shop hit by series of thefts
DISHEARTENED: Rachel Calderhead by the till from which the money was stolen.	Echo picture by Joanna Mann

A CHARITY shop which has been repeatedly targeted by thieves is appealing to the public for help.

More than £300 has been stolen from the Cancer Research UK shop over the past few months.

Thieves initially conned staff out of cash but later resorted to threatening volunteers and helping themselves to fistfuls of cash from the till.

Security The last time they raided the shop, in High Street, Shirley, Southampton, they got away with more than £100.

Shop manager Rachel Calderhead is now appealing for the public to help her improve security.

She is urging companies who may be upgrading their CCTV to donate their old system, or for retired security guards to give up a few hours a week to lend a watchful eye in the store.

"It is desperately sad that a charity shop should have to worry about this kind of crime," she said.

"My team donate their spare time to make a difference to cancer research. When they are faced with incidents such as this it shakes up the shop volunteers terribly. It's very disheartening for them, and everyone who supports us.

"I just wonder what terrible state someone must be in to consider stealing from a charity like this."

Rachel believes that the charity is considered an easy target, as crooks were deliberately trying to con money out of volunteers with learning difficulties.

A Cancer Research UK spokesman said: "This is a horrible crime.

"It is very distressing and depressing for the volunteers, who put in a lot of hours to try to help a good cause, and it diverts much-needed money from the charity."

If you can help, contact Rachel on 023 8078 0196.

What horrible thugs to steal from charity shops. The police should do more patrols along Shirley High Street. Portswood is just as horrible - shoplifting from charity shops is commonplace. I no longer feel safe shopping in Portswood or Southampton and I do my shopping elsewhere. There seems to be a surge of burglars and thieves in this area. Well, get a job and work hard to earn money.
Portswood has also had an influx of alcoholics - give up the drink and get a job. Give up the drugs and get a job. When will adults take responsibility for themselves, grow up and earn a living instead of stealing from charities. The last three months has seen a distinct change in the area for the worst.

CCTV and guards don't help against that kind of threat.

Portswood and Shirley is a hotbed for thieves. It's not because the shops are any good, just purelt because every lowlife alchy and junkie sc"mbag, knows its an easy touch.

The truth is, all the areas and surrounding areas that house this filth are getting worse FACT!

What are these people doing running a charity or something? The ammount of shoplifting going on in the city is hardly suprising when the best efforts of the police amount ot turning up and looking at CCTV footage before pronouncing it unusable for one of fifty different reasons then leaving...Great job guys. The entire seniior ranks of the police force should be fired the CCTV taken down as its useless and the police should go back to doing what they used to do in the 50's POLICING.

My mum ran the Amnesty International and Oxfam Shops in St.Mary's when Mr. Collins (builder) was Director. She loved the people who came in and her stories of various characters were worth writing about - A tramp came in occasionally - went into the back room and eventually came out spanking new - a pile of rags were left. Many people with 'problems' came in and she would listen to their concerns. A Psychiatric employee from Soton South Hants Hosp. said my mum massaged their troubles and they were full of praise for her. On the otherhand there were many who came in - knocked down the price and sold on to boot sales. I loved so much her stories, she was without judgment - just loved people.

Hello Lowe - these bunch of needle cushions should be shipped to an island and left to rot and fend for themselves.

Throw every stinking one of them with all the rapists and let them live the life they spew on this society.

Oh, and throw that fat lump "C" in the middle of them.

If they don't do her, they can eat her!

I'm so sick of the amount of money stolen from charities. Between this, and the huge amount of cash the management of charities skim from them as they go about their "altruistic" jobs, and the cash paid to people harassing shoppers in the street to sign up to DD plans, I'm surprised there's anything left for the causes themselves

The manager could be pro-active and empty the till every hour. She could then put the money in the safe.

Put the Daily Mail down, open the curtains, step outside your front door and try your hardest to get to grips with reality. QF shops regularly in Portswood, and has yet to experience anything resembling your frankly deranged perspective. Idiot.

I'd have thought "put the money in the safe" was a given, Sue. Nobody's going to think simply emptying the till would achieve much

Then they would pinch the safe.
