RACE for Life in Southampton is the largest single event of its kind in the country.

On Sunday July 13, thousands of women will gather to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

It will be a day of high emotion - loved ones remembered and survivors celebrated coming through the disease. There will be great sadness at the loss of so many and immense joy at what can be achieved when people unite for a common cause.

Thousands complete Southampton's Race for Life
Charlotte Firth leads the way from the start.
Charlotte Firth leads the way from the start.

PINK paper messages on the runners' backs said it all - the moving tributes to those whose lives have been claimed by cancer and the celebrations of those who have triumphed over the disease.

One glance at the heartfelt messages worn by Race for Life runners yesterday was enough to understand why some 10,000 women were compelled to take part in the 5k challenge.

Winning wasn't the main aim of those running or walking the Southampton route which snaked for three miles around Southampton Common, through Highfield and down The Avenue.

Their shared goal was to fight cancer by raising as much money for Cancer Research UK as possible.

After an emotional pause to reflect on their very personal reasons for taking part, the ladies set off - some in teams and small groups, others determined to tackle the course alone.

Race organiser Hannah White gave a moving tribute to two-yearold Olivia Gallienne, a star of Race for Life 2007 who lost her fight with leukaemia just weeks after toddling over last year's finish line.

As images of Olivia and her family were broadcast on a giant screen, some members of the crowd spontaneously released the balloons they had been holding, remembering their own loved ones.

The mood was one of remembrance but also of celebration and camaraderie.

I took part in this years event, it was amazing as usual. Its a fantastic cause, and everyone there has been affected by this awful illness. Its a shame, as per usual on the echo's comment page, that people have to mock and be idiots. One day you, or maybe someone close may have to deal with cancer, and i hope you remember making a mockery of it and leaving stupid comments x

Wow, what a day! This was my first Race For Life . Just wanted to say what a friendly and supportive crowd of women you all were. No pushing or shoving, it was a pleasure to be there. Thank you to everyone who took time out to cheer us all on. It was a great atmosphere. Well done to everyone that took part, especially the little children - well done all of you.

My daughter works in co-op, Woolston, she put a bucket on the counter and a short note saying she was going to take part in the race for life. The customers that put money in were probably like myself and many others who sit at home and do nothing. But whether you put money in or sponser someone, or you take part, then we are all taking an interest one way or another.Tara and everyone who took part, I thank you all for your great effort on behalf of us all. WELL DONE. X

It would be nice if these people knew how to park properly instead of blocking exits of homes. There are plenty of buses or they could have walked as part of their warm up. It was interesting to note how many cars had one person only - how selfish? When will women learn how to park considerately and with respect. Whatever happened to the money to make this city a respect city - no respoect was shown to residents around the common yesterday.

1 day out of a year, woman from southampton joined together to do something good. to help raise money 4 cancer research, and people have the nerve to mock it. i cant believe how people can moan about something as stupid as parking. wen there r little childern and adults dying every day of cancer. even people who are very ill with cancer joined in yesterday, which is amazing. but u allways get a handfull of people who put dampers on all the good that happened yesterday. us woman raised money for people who have and are yet to get cancer...we did something good!

Well done to everyone who did it, thankyou to all the great support that me and my daughter had doing it. To those who had problems with parking it was for a short time and one day for a good cause.... Also how do you know it was women drivers as my boyfriend dropped me off. Just remember one day Sue you might be thankful for all those women who give up their time to try and help others. Unfortunately eveeryone knows someone who has lost or is suffering leave the moaning to when it's a selfish act......

what a fab day. We loved taking part in the race again but please please can the organisers change the route back to the original one as there is nothing that compares to running down the entire length of the Avenue seeing thousands of heads bobbing up and down. It made me cry every year at the sheer spectacle of this. See you all next year for our 6th race.

I am surprised at the venom on this website. I needed to go to the hospital yesterday to visit a seriously ill relative and I could not get my car out due to selfish parking. I had to pay for an expensive taxi both ways.I have experienced cancer twice and I wish I had not agreed to surgery as it has ruined the quality of my life. Also living in this self-centred society is not pleasant. I also saw many elderly ladies having surgery for cancer and the quality of their lives were ruined. One husband died of a heart attack becuase he could not cope with visiting and all the turmoil. Another lady had an overdose of radiotherapy and suffered greatly. So think before you criticise other people. There is always two sides to every story.
Posted by: Highfield Resident on 9:42am Mon 14 Jul 08
Obesity is known to increase the risk of cancer. Judging by half the women who parked in my road yesterday, they would be far more successful fighting cancer if they did a run/walk every weekend.
Posted by: Laura, Nursling on 10:42am Mon 14 Jul 08
Like many yesterday, I ran Race for Life and cannot believe that this forum has turned into such haste. I have seen many ladies walking to the race. And indeed many travelled by car. Public transportation in Southampton?? Who are we kidding? We would have run the 2009 race... I have seen cars parked everywhere, but mostly correctly. Might it be that this lady on the tread just got unlucky? And maybe who parked there could have been a man... In general I think the plot has been lost on both sides as well as the main reason why Race for Life exists. We should have more tolerance and respect for each other. It is not fair that someone is parking illegally and blocking some people in, but it is not even fair making a bundle of many thousand women that have given so much time to such a great cause just in consequence of an illegal parking. Time to reflect for all , I think.

Nope. Merely referring to an event in the past tense. If you're going to attempt pedantry, at least try and get it right you fool

How upset i was to read the comment from the Highfield resident that obesity causes cancer. I am neither obese nor were the 7 other members of my family who have had cancer, 3 of whom have passed away. So dont assume that only obese people get cancer. This was my second Race For Life well done to everyone who took part.

Would have been a bit hard with me being male.

Well done for doing something worthwhile. Is that it for the year then?

In reply to the Highfield Resident there is so much hype about obesity and cancer but there are other reasons as well such as hereditary cancer. In my family there have been 4 members with Breast Cancer and 3 with Kidney Cancer and 1 with Brain Cancer. And by the way none of us have even smoked in our lives.

I am absolutley shocked and astounded that such a momentous and worthwhile event has received such hostility on the Echo's webpage. This was the fifth year my family and friends have taken part and as always it was a truely remarkable and moving day. WELL DONE to everybody that took part and raised money for Cancer - after all, that is what the day was all about! Well done to the organiser's too for such a well run event - see you all next year!

Complain to the Council then for better enforcement next year and don't put negative comments on this website. How can people be "selfish" raising money for Cancer Research? Hats off to them.

To the highfield resident maybe instead of commenting on how people look you should make the effort and do race for life then you will that people of all shapes and size have been affected in some way or another by cancer. You should think before being so ignorrant. Well done everyone who took part see you next year.

I agree with Lynn, what a great day once again. This was my 5th event and the emotion of the day is still there. However please can the organisers take note: the original route running the length of the Avenue was the best. And this would mean less road closures and inconvenince to the residents of Highfield. Southampton council know how huge this event is and I would suggest a Park and ride scheme for next year

WELL DONE LADIES!!!!!! I am sure you all agree that yesterday was truely amazing, and the feeling that we are helping so many people is great! 2 all the people turning their noses up and having a whinge, u had plenty of notice about the race, and it was for 1 day! next year you try doing it, see if you feel the same after you see people who have the illness running, and poorly children with their mums running the race 2 save lives. stop being so selfish, and take a moment to think of all the people who lost loved ones who attended yesterday!!!

I find it very sad to read some of the comments left, it was the first time I've done Race for Life with my mum and sister and I was overwhelmed by people of all ages that took part. I think the event is a good thing for southampton. I went to the Isle of wight festival this year and as you can imagine, they have transport issues for that event. But every single local I met were pleasant and friendly. It's a shame the locals around highfield can't manage to be the same for one day of the year.

Why do most things seem to involve the closing of a road?
Use an athletics track, such as the sports centre without the disruption of any road closures.
On top of that, get permission from the council to stage fund raising events such as a raffle.
That way, watchers of the event, and visitors to the sports centre can also contribute.

This is my first race for life at the age of 63. I had breast cancer 14 years ago and have watched my daughter run for several years now. I joined her this year in memory of people I have met through the cancer who are no longer here and those who like me have been so lucky in getting throgh it.
Well done everyone it was an amazing experience.
Hopefully I may be able to repeat it next year.

This is my 3rd race for life but my first in Southampton. I had a great time and thank all the ladies including children who took part. It was a completely amazing experience taking part and some people have forgotten that this only takes place once a year. So I cannot understand why residents are complaining about something that happens once a year!! I personally didn't drive to the event but public transport in Southampton is not great!! To those who are moaning you all need to think about the families and friends who have suffered from cancer and lost loved ones.

Good idea, however I run at least 10k every Saturday morning. Perhaps I could park in front of your driveway for the day, disrupting your plans and cycle to Beaulieu and back to make it more challenging. Will you sponsor me?

Well done for everyone who did the race, I did the one in Winchester last month and enjoyed it but recently found out that only a small percent of the money goes to Cancer Research and the fact that we have to pay to do it slightly annoys me so I do my own Fundraising now!

This year was my very 1st Race for Life... I had the most fantastic day!! I was so proud of myself for running the whole thing in 33 minutes. And I'm really really proud of everyone who wanted to do some good and raise money for people with this terible illness. My dad has survived two counts of Bladder Cancer now and I'm very grateful to still have him here when so many have lost their loved ones.
Finally, I'm really terribly sorry to all those that are so very upset about the race and the trauma it caused them for the day.. with the roads closed and the parking etc... It's very very sad.. my many condolences. It must be awful for you.

THIS WAS MY FIRST RACE FOR LIFE, WHICH I DID WITH MY DAUGHTER. THE ATMOSPHERE WAS FANTASTIC AND IT WAS A VERY EMOTIONAL DAY. I RACED FOR MY FRIENDS HUSBAND, A FRIEND WHO HAS JUST HAD RECONSTRUCTIVE BREAST SURGERY AND MY NAN WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN HERE IF RESEARCH WAS AS GOOD AS IT IS NOW. WELL DONE EVERYONE.. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR X X

I'll sponsor the Highfield resident to shut up! Obviously he is a cancer expert and maybe we should all go to him for advice! Seeing as though he is so helpful and caring. Maybe he can give people weight loss tips too, as he is the font of knowledge.

I cannot believe that someone can could possibly be so rude and pathetic about something that touches so many people in our lives as much as cancer does.(WEATHER YOUR OBESE OR NOT!!) If he could possibly understand how it feels to watch somebody going through the journey that cancer leads you then maybe he might realise LIFE IS FAR TOO SHORT to worry about where to park!!!
Finally everyone be proud of what you did on sunday...

Message to the Sue in Southampton who lives near the common. For one day in the year that many people are raising money for a fantastic cause, can you not just 'grin and bear it!' and note it is not all women driving.
Well done to all those who ran/walked the course. This is my fifth year and can say what a fab event! Thanks to Cancer research! Come on Girl's - make sure you all put your money in.

Do you realise how pathetic you sound!!!
