Beggar’s fair is a victim of its own success
ROMSEY'S free music festival Beggar's Fair could be in jeopardy because it is getting too popular.
The annual summer music event attracted hundreds of people to the town and next year organisers are facing rising costs to police the music and street entertainment weekend.
Police have told organisers they need to provide extra policing to meet strict licensing guidelines before next year's fair can go ahead, and they will not be able to meet the same level needed for this year's festival without a financial contribution.
The event, which peaked on Saturday, July 12, saw more than 3,000 people fill the streets and pubs of Romsey in what has been hailed as its greatest year yet.
The committee say they are confident next year's event will go ahead and are now looking for other ways to generate funding.
Chairman Delsia Bartlett said: "Changing legislation and issues of public safety are going to present the biggest challenge next year, not least raising a considerable amount more money for its funding."
Romsey's police inspector Bernadette Smith praised the organisers but said there were too many people to control at the festival, which had become a victim of its own success.
"The main issue is that there are hundreds of people in our town with little or no crowd-control measures having been put into place," she said.

Perhaps they ought to invade a local field, set up camp and hold it there.
Would be days before the legal procedures go through to remove them, and extra profits as no licences or policing to pay for.
What is good for one group in society, can be good for others.

I went along on the Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Everybody seemed to be having a good time and I didn't see any trouble.
It would be a shame if this traditional event gets cancelled because of Elf n Safety !
What's the cost of an additional 20 coppers for the day ?

It's all very civil during the day, unfortunately after aprrox. 6.30pm all the chavs from surrounding Banjo Country arrive.
That's when potential troublespots erupt.

Hulla, baloo - No chance, the uniform branch (old bill) of government would be all over you like a rash, that is of course assuming that the organizers are normally law abiding. As you intimate, a pikey advisor with appropriate tarmac lorry would need to be employed - give the OB something to allow them to claim they are busy eleswhere.

"What's the cost of an additional 20 coppers for the day ?"
Priceless.
Who would then be deployed all over the area and sitting in the sun to catch motorists creeping a few mph over the limit.
Just use hobby bobbies for this kind of 'policing' The others need to be sat down in the station doing hours of paperwork
