25,000 back Haslar military hospital battle

NEARLY 25,000 people have signed a petition calling for an historic Hampshire hospital to be transformed into a centre for injured soldiers.

The online petition is urging the government to turn the Royal Hospital Haslar at Gosport into a home for injured service personnel.

Since it was established in 1753, Haslar provided medical care to servicemen and women and later to civilians as well. But, despite protests, the hospital - now in the hands of the NHS - is closing down next year.

Campaigners have now launched a new petition urging the government to use the hospital as a home for injured members of the army, navy and air force.

Tim McClement, who is promoting the petition, said: "We need a dedicated military hospital if servicemen and women, who have been committed to hostilities and injured, are to get the medical care they rightly deserve."

The petition states: "With the growing numbers of wounded personnel repatriated to the UK, and with continued growth in medically discharged personnel since the Falklands War to current conflicts and operations, our servicemen and women and veterans of previous operational service are owed the best medical care possible.

"The existing facilities are falling short and the NHS is not meeting the needs of veterans who still need treatment for their service-related conditions. A dedicated military and veterans' hospital will help resolve this."

The petition closes on August 19. To sign it, visit http:// petitions.pm.gov.uk/Wounded
