Opposition to Barton Farm

MOST Winchester people remain strongly opposed to development on Barton Farm, according to a new survey.

The research by the Liberal Democrats shows opposition to the 2,000-home development from people living in and around the city.

Only 26 per cent of the 340-person sample favoured increased growth with half also opposing the current planned growth.

Bushfield Camp was the most favoured site for development (38 per cent); Barton Farm got 20 per cent; Teg Down seven and Pitt Manor, nine.

The Lib Dems' poll clashes with the results of a survey of people attending public meetings earlier this year organised by the city council seeking feedback into its local development framework (LDF) plans. That survey showed that, if major development was needed, some 77 per cent favoured Barton Farm.

The Barton Farm issue is the most contentious in the city since the building of the M3 through Twyford Down in the early 1990s.
