School in crisis
ABSENT: Headteacher Carole Bird.
ABSENT: Headteacher Carole Bird.

A SOUTHAMPTON primary school has been plunged into crisis after standards were branded unacceptable at a time when it is without its headteacher.

Carole Bird has not been at Newlands Primary School since half-term, but mystery surrounds her unexplained absence.

Southampton City Council refused to say why she was not at the school but it is understood she is not on sick leave.

Today a report is published criticising leadership and management at the school and demanding an immediate action plan be drawn up.

More frequent inspections will now take place at the 335-pupil school in Ullswater Road, Millbrook, the only one in the city on special measures'.

This means it is subject to visits every term by Government-appointed inspectors.

The failing school must also draw up an action plan, but it will have to do it without its headteacher at the helm.

The council's education bosses and the school have pledged to continue to work together to improve standards.

They said that extra responsibilities have been given to senior members of staff while headteachers from other outstanding schools had been drafted in.

Inspectors found weaknesses with Newlands' leadership and management, weaknesses across maths, English and science, poor attendance and inconsistent teaching.

However they praised the school's foundation stage, pupils' good behaviour, and youngsters' well being, with children enjoying taking on responsibilities such as being elected to the school council.

Councillor Peter Baillie, Cabinet member for children's services said: "I am confident the plans we and Newlands have already begun to implement will enable the school to make rapid changes in the coming weeks and months."

n Sticky Fingers Pre-School based at the school is not part of Newlands Primary. It received a good Ofsted report last year.

I'll wager a shilling that she is still drawing a salary, at the "Bermuda Triangle" or wherever she is living !

it was only a matter of time before this happend. she thinks she knows best about everything. she doesnt listen to staff or parents or outside agentcies. 1 parent had a petition going to get rid of her because of bullying at the school which had at least half the parents signitures on it. i say get rid of her and premote the deputy head ms hart she would be a brilliant head teacher.

There may have been a touch of sarcasm there

What about some positive thoughts yes standards are unacceptable however when I look at my childs happiness and willingness to go to school this counts for alot. I had a child who was sad in their previous school and I chose Newlands because of the caring nature loads of activities offered and the friendliness of all the staff from the moment you walk to reception. I feel my child is in a happy safe environment which helps me to be confident in leaving them. Even though I want the best for my child, and education is very important I am now hoping that the school standards go up but does not loose sight of the caring ethos. So, thank you too all the school staff.

OK, so the head has disappeared. But what about all the dedicated staff who are still there trying to pick up the pieces and the backlash from this report? The council need to stop looking for someone to blame. Everyone needs to take responsibility, including the parents. The head may have had some questionable proceedures and ideas but she couldn't have been that bad or she wouldn't have been made a headteacher? And if she really is, why was she given a school to run?

Come on people, look at the bigger picture and help the current staff there in teaching the children and proving that Newlands is no different from any other school in Southampton.

What a shame - this used to be a fantastic school.
The emphasis was always on learning and the school teams excelled at sport.
Across time something has gone wrong - is it because of the type of pupil or the type of teacher?
All I know is that when I was at that primary school there were some fantastic teachers: Stocking,Parsons,
Walters,Rolls etc.
The calibre of teachers in the Middle school was equally as good:Knopf,
Johnson,Parker,Dever
s etc. All marshalled by the brilliant Leaonard Dawkins.
It must be a real shame for those people to see how the school has deteriorated.

Im sorry as a parent with children attending the school, I cant fault the teachers or the Governors they work so hard for the pupils. I have two children one of which is a high achiever and has done fantstically, the other not such a high achiever and has improved so much with the support from the teachers and their equally fantastic assistants. Parents who are not happy with the school also need to look at themselves there are alot of parents out there who do not send their children to school everyday and on time, which does affect how much they learn

Bravo!!! some positive quotes, Newlands is a great school who has always put the child first and this is exactly what Carole Bird did!!. With staff who care Newlands will stand tall.

Most of those you mention are probably dead!
Sad news about this school. What can you expect? The catchment area could not be different from that of 30 years ago when Millbrok was so different and this school produced good pupils who wanted to learn and respected others.

Well said, maybe some of these parents should take a good long look at themselves!!

Good to see positive comments which reinforces my sentiments - Politics, national or local should be taken out of control of schooling. My belief is that parents and elected governors should be in total control of their own schools. With no part played by dogmatic politicians swaying back and forth whilst yet another generation of children suffer. Obviously the treasury and monies from local authorities would be used, however, the control must remain with parents. There will be those that say parents do not get involved, and I can see why, they are at present not listened too. Parents should make demands, it is your children that these fools fight over !

As a person who has a little knowledge of the inspection procedure which took place at Newlands, I think it is a shame that the way this was carried out and the attitude of the inspectors is not in the public domain, as I question the motives behind the focus of their inspection.

Also it has to be said that the difficulties faced by the staff and pupils alike, should not be compared with that of a village school where the children experience a lesser degree of social deprevation.

I say lets all support the school, staff and pupils and give some positive comments about the school or BEWARE as the Local Authority will use this as a good excuse to close yet another school in Southampton and sell the land to build more flats!

Please make your choice of support carefully before you add to this post!

Oh dear, what a gratuitous headline! Wake up Echo, improve YOUR standards and produce some evidence of balanced quality journalism working to improve the community. Yes, the OFSTED report may have identified areas requiring improvments within the regime at Newlands Primary School. But NO, not a school "plunged into crisis". I suggest your naive reporter should take a long hard look at society in general outside of Newlands School to recognise and report on a crisis. Well done and thank you to the dedicated Head Teacher, staff, governors, supportive parents and children who work so hard to make Newlands School a safe, enjoyable, healthy and rewarding place to be. You all have my support and best wishes for the journey ahead of you. Keep up the good work. If Newlands can work to help improve the local community, shape up Daily Echo lets see some professionalism to improve life for others?

Newlands is not like other schools in Southampton. Sadly there are wider problems outside the schools control that affect it- I visit Millbrook as part of my job and I know how deprived the area is. It's certainly not like the school my son goes to 3 miles away.

Newlands is a hard working caring school that has hit a hard time, but I am certain with the staff support the school has it will be back on its feet in no time. Hopefully parents from the school will support the school in its fight and not put blame upon them.

Mr Burghart, bring him back, it would have been better if they keep the two schools divided both with a head teacher each, that what is was like when i was at that school.

Newlands Primary is a good school. Yes improvments need to be made to some procedures and ultimately standards raised, but it is heartbreaking to read these comments which are affecting the moral of a staff team i am proud to be part of. Come on, lets all pull together and focus on the most important people in all of this - the children.

1. this is happening increasingly to many headteachers across the country including in Ed Balls' own local school.
2. the last Ofsted for this school with the same headteacher identified "outstanding leadership".
3. Ofsted was introduced by Thatcher to close schools.
4. Please draw your own conclusions on the above.
5. And why are local people not fighting this slur on their local school?
