Public transport plea
BOOSTING public transport and getting more people to walk and cycle have been Liberal/ Democrat policies for decades but the development of the town provides opportunities to put this into practice in Andover.
"Better bus services would benefit everybody," he said.
"When the bus services start running from the MDA (Major Development Area) at East Anton we need some to be extended to Little London and Smannell and get as many people to use them as we can.
"This town will have real problems with traffic when it extends to 50,000 or 60,000 people unless people use public transport.
"We need to make it easier for people to walk and cycle so they don't need their cars to get to work.
"One particular problem is many houses are being built on the east side of the town. But businesses are planned for the west side. Who is going to use two buses and change just to cross Andover when they can use their car? We need to make it easier to travel by bus and if necessary subsidise the buses in town."
Some people have already contacted him about the problems they experience trying to reach the Andover cemetery by public transport and he said this sort of problem will only increase when more sports facilities are moved to the edge of town.
He recognises people need cars and believes the council should try to identify small spaces in residential areas which could be earmarked as parking spaces to ease problems in parts of the town.
