TOP Tory Eric Pickles was bowled over by the large number of sporting facilities that have sprung up in a Hampshire town.

Mr Pickles - pictured above with Councillor Davis Russell - shadow secretary of state for communities and local government, inspected Totton's all-weather bowls centre and other amenities during a four-hour visit to the parish. Totton's history and culture were also on the minister's agenda. Mr Pickles began by touring Eling Tide Mill and a nearby heritage centre, where he viewed an ancient dagger that has gone on show.

After inspecting the Garage Youth Centre he made his way to the skateboard park and BMX track at Bartley Park. Next on the list was a visit to the arts centre at Hanger Farm, which also boasts the largest outdoor floodlit tennis centre in Hampshire.

The minister concluded his tour with a trip to the neighbouring bowls centre, where he took part in an Any Questions? session.
