New Forest Show
It’s showtime!

| WOODCRAFT: Father and son team Kevin and Robert Chatley. Order no: 7100974 |
A COUPLE of short sharp showers was not enough to dampen the spirits of thousands of visitors stepping through the gates on the opening day of the New Forest Show yesterday.
Relieved organisers thanked their lucky stars that the weather behaved itself after last year's deluge, rejoicing when the sun shone through the clouds in the afternoon.
The three-day extravaganza got off to a stomping start as visitors arrived early at New Park in Brockenhurst to begin exploring the action-packed 40-acre site.
Hunter horses chased winning rosettes in the main arena while the thundering of Shetland pony hooves drew cheers from the crowd as junior jockeys raced to the finish line in the Shetland Pony Grand National in the afternoon.

The spectacular sight of the heavy horse musical drive led by shimmering shires proved to be a popular event for families resting their legs after lunch.
With the New Forest Plonkers providing musical accompaniment to an al fresco lunch, there was something yummy to tantalise everyone's taste buds, from pies, to pasties and New Forest ice-cream, with thirst-quenching pints of real ale from Ringwood Brewery or the Commoners Drift to wash it all down.
Bellowing prime cattle greeted spectators to the Holstein, Dexter and Dairy Cattle Championships, while visitors flocked to see sheep bleating in the pen next door.
Muscled woodsmen wielding an axe and cleaving pieces of timber were applauded by the crowd, especially when Reg Adams, from Dorset Lumberjack Sports, was presented with an award celebrating his 50th year of being at the New Forest Show.
Reg was not the only one celebrating, as gardener Rob Redcliffe, from New Milton, won gold at the Flower Show for his spectacularly modern garden design, fresh from winning a prize at the Hampton Court Show earlier this month.

I hope it keeps fine for them, but £15 per head is roughly double what I'm willing to pay to get in.

"the New Forest Plonkers"
Is that the orignal plonker or the modern meaning? I used the term to call my brother a dick in the 70's.
I remember that oh so successful punk band in Hythe called Pen15, who together with The Untalented Mob ruled.

Shame about the grammar in the first line of the article again.
£15 entry and no parking charge with everything there is to do and see from 8.00am until 7.00pm is one of the best values around. Compare it with entry to St Marys, the cinema, Paultons Park, Marwell or a night club

Does'nt think £15 is a lot of money. Obviously a TOFF! Are you going in your Bentley?

Hey guys get real - I'm no toff- i'm a single parent etc - but compare prices to every major attraction - and £15 is a good price - especailly as we can go for the whole day and do loads of things - it's not just two hours - take a picnic - make it a fun day out

Marwell - £14.50 includes all attractions
Paultons - £16.00 includes all attractions
Longleat - £22.00 - includes all attractions plus unlimited returns in year to use up "passport ticket"
Beaulieu - £16.50 includes all attractions plus unlimited returns in year to use up "passport ticket"
New Forest Show - £15 includes arena and countryside displays that are not constant plus admission to craft and food areas where you then have to spend a fortune from sellers who are having to recoup the expensive exhibitor costs. You also get the opportunity to get walked over by the wealthier classes - at least, that was my experience when I last went two or three years ago!
Make up your own mind - but I personally think £15 is too expensive for what's on offer at New Park.
Longleat is best value in my opinion and we can make a passport ticket last three days, especially if you want to visit the gardens at various times of the year (on which there is no restriction as long as you hold a current ticket).
It's just a shame that the petrol increases the cost of getting to Warminster.

re: the grammar criticism - the wording was incorrect - "a couple was" !
And sad that people have this notion that this is for "toffs" - my daughter had a fantastic day yesterday - greatly enhanced by all the "give-aways" which she collected throughout the day.
Well worth £15. A very enjoyable experience.
