Richard’s back on the airwaves

HE has only just hung up his headphones after 35 years on the radio.

But days after the "off" switch was thrown the Daily Echo can reveal that broadcasting legend Richard Cartridge is taking to the airwaves again.

The silky-voiced Radio Solent stalwart has been snapped up by Hampshire's newest radio station, Original 106FM.

He will now take the helm of Original's Sunday morning show, from 7am to 11am, which promises a mix of quality music and great chat.

Yesterday he got his first taste of his new home as he met with station bosses as well as breakfast show presenters Simon James and Hill for a tour of the studios.

Cartridge is one of several presenters who have recently parted company with Radio Solent after a controversial shake-up by BBC bosses to win back listeners.

Despite a storm of controversy surrounding his departure, the 57-year-old, who lives just outside Southampton, gracefully insisted it was a joint decision for him to leave.

He broadcast his last show for Radio Solent last Friday.

Speaking exclusively to the Echo, Cartridge said that he was excited to be taking on a new challenge so soon after leaving the BBC.

He said: "I was interested in what Original was doing anyway because they have a great music mix.

"I'm delighted that I've been given this opportunity so quickly as it was only a few days ago that I left the BBC.

"I'm looking forward to a new challenge. Original is a new station and has a big regional presence.

"I also hope I can continue to be popular with the Hampshire audience.

"I've got lots of new ideas for Sunday morning - we're going to try several things out but it will be a mix of great tunes and a lighter look at the Sunday papers."

John Evington, programme director, said: "It's fantastic to have Richard onboard.

"At Original we have three main proposals - great music, 24-hour news and personality presenters.

"Commercial radio has become very samey - all the presenters sound the same.

"We believe in recruiting people with personality, and Richard is one of those people.

"He's been around a long time and has a large, loyal following. He is a broadcasting legend and I can't think of anyone better to take the helm of our Sunday morning show."

Cartridge will now enjoy a two-week break with family in the Dominican Republic before starting his new show on February 4.

Richard Factfile

  • Richard joined the BBC as a freelance presenter in 1972, before getting his own show in 1974.
  • He has also worked for 2CR FM and Classic FM.
  • He is known for his silky voice, which is often compared to Roger Moore's.
  • He lives in Sholing with his partner Chellan, her daughter Amber, his daughter Lucy and Chellan's 86-year-old mother.
  • He and Chellan got together after Richard's co-presenter Sylv Willoughby acted as a matchmaker.
  • Richard hit the charts last year with his single I've Found Love Again which raised money for the BBC's Children in Need Appeal.

What happened to Gethin Jones? He used to work with Richard Cartridge on Radio Solent. Where is he now? How is he? and what he is doing?

Now if Original 106 would just sign up Nick Girdler and Peter White, that would definitely be the end of Radio Solent. There'd be something good to listen locally instead of the dumbed-down rubbish that's coming out of Radio Solent at the moment - not that I listen to it any more. I can only hope.

In response to A McCallum, you'll find them at www.original106.com and their 'listen online' is very good quality!

Excellent news! Original 106 has just gained two more listeners.
radio Solent is now left scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Excellent news for 106. I'II now give them a try and put Richard's first appearance date in the diary.
Migrated away from Solent in recent months...it's gone down hill so much it really isn't worth the bother. The breakfast show in particular sounds very tired and more like old-fashioned commercial radio every day.
I'm told the amount of audience the station has lost is incredible. Apparently something called Rajar monitors such things but I'm not sure how to find out about it. Good luck to Rich and 106 - perhaps they could sign up Sylv as well!!!

Thank you for enquiring. I do have a pulse. I was alerted to this article via a friend. I spent nearly 25 years at Solent as man and boy. I was removed like Richard but life is too short to bear grudges. Move on! Come-uppances are dealt with beyond this mortal coil!

Original 106 is a fantastic new station, presenters are great, I started listening in November and really enjoy the music. Good to hear Richard is joining Original.

An excellent move by Original 106 to snap up Richard Cartridge. If they wish to continue with excellent talent then they need look no further than Jean-Paul Hansford ( x programme controller/presenter ) of Isle of Wight Radio. These quality broadcasters must not be forgotten. It`s a shame Radio Solent don`t realise if someone has talent and instead of booting out the good ones, gets rid of that awful Judy person in the early mornings who keeps laughing when she talks.

At last! An answer to my google query 'Where is Richard Cartridge?' I am so pleased that Richard's talents will once again be on the airwaves for all to enjoy. I think Radio Solent have made a big boob here and whilst I appreciate Charlie Crocker and her producer are trying to bring something different and need time to establishment themselves- personally, I wonder why Solent meddled with such a winning formula? I am a recent convert to local radio originally due to wanting the travel news (which is superb) and when I discovered Richard's show, I was hooked.
Does anyone remember his recent interview with
the author of Grumpy Old Women? And what about all that borderline banter we used to hear between him and Georgie?
I'm back to Radio Four now most of the time but I will listen in to Original on 4th February between 7 and 11 am. Let's hear it for Richard!

Have just found out what has happened to the big fella, good luck to 106 and Richard. Will be joining their listeners. No longer have to put up with dross on Solent.

I wasa in a band with richard cartridge called shadowlands and we toured all over uk , we did radio shows with him to, I must just say that he is one of the most talenetd musicians I have ever met , and he is a great laugh to be with and a real professional, we would never have made it without richard , and a great mate he is to.

At last I've found Richard again. I shall definately be listening on Sundays from now on.He and Nick were the only interviewers who actaully allowed their guests to speak without interuption and the occasional pertinant question.
has anyone a progress for Nick please?

PLEASE try to get the marvellous Nick Girdler back on the airwaves again.
I have given up on Radio Solent since the "shake up". There is nothing since then that grabs my attention.

Well I'm a bit late finding these postings but in total agreement - when Nick went and then Richard, Radio Solent was finished for me. What happened to humour, tongue in cheek banter etc? Thanks for signposting Original, much better station now.

I live in the sussex area out of solents range 'but I got a radio that I could pick up nick girdler and richard cartridge on. They were great.since they've left I don't listen to anymore local radio as it's just rubbish.

I have just read through the comments left but others on this page and i couldn't agree more. I too used to listen avidly to Nick Girdler and Richard Cartridge and was always highly entertained. I'm glad to hear that Richard has found his way to another station. We just have to hope that Nick Girdler gets a yearning to come back. He is still sadly missed. Radio Solent have made a big mistake in losing such talent.
