Nick Rogers, left, and Joe Glanfield in action yesterday.

NICK Rogers and Joe Glanfield endured a mixed day as fickle conditions caused more problems for the Olympic 470 fleet in Qingdao.

Not assisted by a first race penalty, the duo, who finished fourth in Athens and celebrated a decade as a partnership last year, finished ninth and sixth in yesterday's races and are third in the overall fleet standings.

But Lymington-based Rogers and his partner are just one point back from France's Nicolas Charbonnier and Olivier Bausset in the silver medal position while Australia's Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page are just eight points clear.

"We had a penalty in our first race which was really frustrating - it's the sort of mistake that can really cost you," said Rogers "But we picked ourselves and got back into the next race and that's going to really help our confidence.

"It's very close and I expect it will stay close throughout the regatta.

"We are just going to keep our heads down, keep focused on good strategy and accuracy and we'll continue to get better."
