Listen to Olympic sailor Ben Ainslie's podcast
Celebration for sailors
HAMPSHIRE'S medal-winning
Olympic sailors
will be welcomed home
with a lavish bash in
their honour, the Daily
Echo can reveal.
Lymington's Ben Ainslie rewrote
history by becoming Britain's
greatest ever Olympic sailor by
taking his fourth medal - and third
gold - in Qingdao.
At just 22, Pippa Wilson, pictured,
won her first gold with team-mates
Sarah Ayton and SarahWebb in the
Yngling class while Nick Rogers
picked up a silver in the 470 fleet.
Now, their home club, Royal
Lymington Yacht Club, is planning
an extravagant celebration party
to recognise their achievements.
Club secretary Kevin Podger
said: "Ben, Pippa and Nick arrive
back in the country onMonday and
on Wednesday they are released
from their post-Olympic duties.
"Nothing is set in stone yet, but
we're hoping to have an afternoon
and evening of celebrations at the
club on Wednesday in recognition
of what they have achieved.
"The plan is to get the Olympians
out on the water in the afternoon
with our junior sailors so they can
teach them a thing or two, then in
the evening there will be a reception.
"We will be unveiling our new
Olympics honours board and afterwards
we will have dinner and a
party for all the club members
who want to come.
"Everyone at the club is so
proud and it's the least we could do
to recognise the marvellous
achievements of our very special
club members."
Ainslie's magnificent achievement
sparked calls for him to be
knighted.
Lymington mayor Martina
Humber told the Daily Echo: "It
would be a lovely idea if Ben was
given a knighthood.
"His performance in the
Olympics just goes to prove he
deserves it.
"What better way to celebrate
such a remarkable achievement
than to have him knighted.
"It would be jolly good.
"The whole of Lymington is very
proud of both Ben and Pippa.
"The whole place is buzzing
with excitement and
we look forward to
welcoming them
home and inviting
them to a special
reception."

Oh woopeedoo The beer will be flowing that night, sounds like jolly good fun, a real hoot, crab paste sandwiches too! I reckon she's getting confused with Ainslie Harriot who gets my vote for a knightship rather than Lymington's 'finest' I expect no one else in the country will remember these 'heroes' names except for those in Lym'ers & 'amble Give the real athletes some reward and just let this crew have their day at the Royal. Toodaloo cheps!
