Island Sailing Club host Etchells qualifier

The last weekend in August saw the Island Sailing Club, for the first time, host the Bedrock Trophy, an annual International Etchells class regatta which is a qualifying event for the World Championships to be held in Melbourne so close racing was expected.

Saturday was one of the best sailing days this year - sunshine, a sparkling Solent and a fairly steady force 4 wind allowed three windward-leeward races to take place on the Brambles Bank for the fleet of twelve boats. All three were won by Swedish Blue with Elvis scoring two seconds and a fourth and, on equal points, China White with a second and two thirds. Some of the racing was very close and exciting to watch with, on occasions, four or five boats almost in a line. Unfortunately, the Sailing Instructions did not allow Race Officer Willie Sanderson and his team to run any more races on the first day.

Sunday was the opposite - very little wind in very variable directions. Later than planned, the Committee Boat set out for the race area and competitors followed. After a fruitless two hour wait, racing was abandoned for the day and all headed back to Cowes.
