If Jan Poortvliet is correct and all Saints lack is a bit of belief, they should have gone at least some way to putting that right in last night's friendly against West Ham.
The head coach said he would treat the match as if it were the season opener against Cardiff a week today.
In truth the opposition meant that was hard. West Ham had top quality Premiership players on show but ones who are a week behind Saints in their preparations for the new season.
But this was more about what Saints could do rather than anything else and there were some encouraging signs even though it is fair to say they go into the first day of the Championship season not the finished article.
The major pre-season concern has been the lack of goals, with only one netted in three first team friendlies up until last night.
There still appeared to be a major lack of confidence in the final third until Saints scored - and suddenly you could visibly see the players start to produce the belief Poortvliet has talked about as they began to think that perhaps they were good enough to compete.
advertisement
If there is still one problem it's that elusive final ball where Saints are falling down.
At the back despite a lack of pace and the occasional exposing of the full backs they looked very solid, Michael Svensson marshalling the defence well.
Lloyd James at right back has got to be the star of pre-season, having been excellent in every game he's played and very much looking the part.
He is not only defending well but gets forward and can deliver a great cross.
The holding midfield duo of Morgan Schneiderlin and Simon Gillett look solid. Schneiderlin we know is a class act, the question has been whether he needs a Gillett type or a more experienced head alongside him but they are a good pair.
When you get to the front players there is plenty of promise but it is here that the belief is at times lacking and that's where that final ball scenario creeps in.
Adam Lallana looks decent in the hole, Lee Holmes and Jake Thomson weren't equally so in the attacking wide positions.
When they do look confident they can deliver but that belief must become a permanent feature rather than a fleeting one.
David McGoldrick has set himself up to start against Cardiff with two much needed goals. His main problem has been trying to calm his enthusiasm to run non-stop and realise his role in this set-up is to be the predator down the middle.
But the one thing the youngsters do have is a massive appetite to do well and what's more to do well for each other - and that shines through.
Holmes had the first chance of the match and showed a decisive edge when he opted to shoot on seven minutes but Marek Stech turned it wide at the near post.
James made two great defensive blocks before, on the second one, the ball rebounded to Carlton Cole whose effort was saved by Bartosz Bialkowski.
But midway through the half Saints suddenly started to get going, keeping the ball well, perhaps buoyed by the realisation that Poortvliet's words that they can compete might have a basis.
First McGoldrick and then Lallana missed the target before Thomson cut inside and saw his curling shot plucked out of the air by Stech.
Saints really hit top form shortly after, when they scored twice in four minutes.
The first came on 32 minutes, James with an inviting, curling, tantalising cross to the far post and McGoldrick peeling off his man and heading downwards to beat Stech.
Saints doubled their lead on 36 minutes when Holmes took advantage of a loose ball after what looked a West Ham free kick that was never given and slid the ball into McGoldrick's path.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw Stech advancing and lifted the ball over the advancing keeper, a terrific finish for 2-0.
It could have been 3-0 when Holmes crossed to McGoldrick on 38 minutes but this time his header was directed at the keeper. At the other end Bialkowski did well to stop from Craig Bellamy.
Sadly, an old and unwelcome Saints trait returned towards the end of half - uncertain defending of set-pieces.
First Saints somehow bundled the ball behind for a corner, but with little knowledge of how.
Then from the next effort from the other side they left Callum Davenport unmarked and he duly made it 2-1.
West Ham made second half changes and looked hungrier and sharper for it.
Saints threatened first with a McGoldrick chip that never quite got going and then a Svensson header over the bar.
Thomson had a gilt edged chance on 54 minutes, through one-on-one after robbing Valron Behrami of the ball, but his finish lacked that belief.
It was past the advancing keeper but tamely wide.
Bialkowski had already scrambled away a Carlton Cole header but was helpless to prevent the Hammers levelling on 64 minutes.
Behrami got to the right by-line and cut the ball back to sub Zavon Hines who hit a brilliant low first time volley into the bottom corner.
The remainder of the match continued to be played at a high tempo but there was no winner for either side, the Hammers coming closest when Junior Stanislas tried his luck from distance but Bialkwoski, at full stretch, turned the ball round the post.
But for Saints the important thing was not the result but to capture a bit more of that much needed belief.
I was there last night and it really does look promising for the season. The Dutch duo really have got us playing some good football.True we need some more bite up front but that will surely come as the season progresses.
Its amazing how far we have come with NPs departure well done to Wilde&Lowe for having the balls to do it.
No doubt the whingers (who probably werent there) will find something to moan about. But never mind I am really looking forward to this coming season.

I wasn't at the match but from what I've heard there's plenty to be pleased about. We're not going to play teams like West Ham in the Championship and to be honest looking at the division there's plenty of crap out there.
Schneiderlin and Holmes look to be great signings.

While we obviously shouldn't get carried away over this result, you would have to be one of the most rabid Lowe haters not to feel a glint of optimism, if Saints played as well as reports sugggest. It is still very much early days and there is still much to improve, but perhaps we are beginning to believe this can work.

who ever stays away because of lowe after seeing what this team will do more often than not will be missing a treat...I was told burley played "passing football" sorry, after watching that last night he does not!!! That was some of the best football I have seen in years..
Holmes, schniederlin, gillit and james were absolute stars made scott parker, craig bellamy, lucas neill and co look like mugs..
watching James play like he did at RB made me feel physically sick at the thought of previous management playing jermian wright there so much..
If this is what Rupert Lowe see's as the way forward as we are cash strapped, THEN I WANT TO SEE MORE...

I too am getting very excited about the forthcoming season, the team is starting to work together very well, lets get some big crowds at sms and really get behind the lads and with a bit of luck and the wind in the right direction we can finish in the top two!

Well well, what a very pleasant surprise! Saints were great last night, and though it's certainly passing football, it's a million miles from the interminably dull fare served up by the likes of Burley and Hoddle. These players actually seem to know where the goal is; there was none of that horrible square stuff in the middle of the park and we even got to see (shock horror!) the occasional good long ball.
Schneiderlin was the best player on the park by a country mile, but how can we possibly hope to keep him if he can play like that?
Of course the rough and tumble of the Championship is another matter, but this was a great Saints performance by anyone's standards.
They could yet prove me and the other cynics wrong.....

As a West ham fan at the game i must agree that the saints looked good at time and hopefully they will do well this year as for West Ham it could be another one of those seasons. P.S Shame that so many Saints fans did not turn up to support there team! Hammers were there in force but thats a given.

The attendance would have been higher, but a few thousand fans, in red and white striped shirts, were at Hayling Island watching the Whale, and were most annoyed when they were told that it was Not Matt LeTissier taking a dip!

I would love to see some negative comments after last nights performance! I was there and was very pleased. We were lucky to stay up last season and last night played a decent west ham team. Yes it was just one game, but what a game! Great football. I hope JP continues what he is doing and ignores comments from negative armchair fans that you see on here!

Confident attacking football again!
Welcome back!
I know that there will be a number of posters that will suggest that fans should exercise a little bit of restraint because it was only a friendly game, BUT WHY?
It's our job to get excited ... isn't it?

I totally agree with all the comments above. Saints were outstanding last night and if they play like that for even of the majority of the season I think we will be looking at a top 2 if not play off spot.
I particularly like the look of Schneiderlin, he looks a class act! Lloyd James was brilliant at right back aswell. If this is Lowes plan then I am all for it if it produces games of the quality of last night.
If we can get St Marys full every game it will be a big boost for the players so come on you stay aways get back to the ground and support the TEAM not the management otherwise you will be missing a treat!
COYR!

Wow what a difference a couple of months make!!
Now we have got rid of the players here for their meal tickets we seem to have a squad that wants to play for each other. I for one have been on this website criticizing the board and the squad but i am truly optimistic for the new season. Fair play mr lowe i think you may have this one right. COYR!!!

I'm still aiming for safety, followed by financial improvement but a few wins in the bag and who knows.
My wish last season was for 3 wins in a row.
If we get a few of those - who knows, maybe it will be the biggest prize of all.
Up the Saints!!

Well, what an inspirational night! A good turn out of red radiators watching a well groomed team with skill, enthusiasm, determination and a genuine desire to give 100% of their best. The atmosphere was good, and fans left with a warm feeling inside. How refreshing. Just the tonic we needed.
For any red drainers still out there - my advice would be - quit dwelling on the past and change direction. Yesterday has gone, measurable progress has been made under JP and the chairman didn't even make the bench! Give credit where it is due. Good news travels fast. Rejoin the red radiators - - - otherwise you may find it difficult to get a seat!
Can't wait to attend the Stoke match to get another fix!

I'm now looking forward to seeing how the team handle Stoke, next week, which I see as the key pre-season game for the young'uns. Stoke will be more physical and more like the CCC teams we will face from next Saturday, and despite not liking Lowe, I wish them well for that game and the rest of the season.

In answer to your question, the late, great James W Dickinson springs to mind who, not only played a record number of times for Pompey, but also managed to gain 47 England caps, at a time when they were not handed out to every Tom, Dick & Harry.
MLT was just a big fish in a very small pond, who was adored by Saints fans, but who the the England selectors, (who were not Pompey fans)considered to be a just a good club man.

As a 65 year-old Cowes-born "Saints" supporter now Singapore-domiciled to defend the last remnants of the Colonial Empire, I am however heartened by the new regime - Rupert Lowe & the Dutch duet. Financial stability - to avoid falling into the same kind of abyss as the likes of Luton Town & Rotherham United now find themselves - can only compliment what I perceive (admittedly at a long distance) as some adroit professionalism from Poortvliet & Wotte in blending some Academy youngsters into a partnership of some professional self-belief with respected seniors such as Svensson. But next Saturday's away game @ Cardiff City will be an initial litmus test as to whether the new formula will stand up to the rigours of another gruelling Coca-Cola Championship campaign with those elusive Premiership promotion slots always at stake.
But Good Luck to "Saints" nevertheless from this supportive Singapore household

Well what can i say, light at the end of the tunnel that's what!
The Kids are Alright. Well done.
My only concerns are that we seemed a bit light weight up front and, can we play like this on a cold wet November Saturday away from home. Time will tell. We bossed The Hammers last night that's a good start.
Welcome home Killer. C-O-Y-R

So who do you think picked the England team when Walter Winterbottom was manager? It was the England selectors.
Yes, there are also England selectors for the England cricket team, so can understand why you appear to be confused, or perhaps I should say, 'stumped'.
I would hardly say that the current England team is an Old Boys Club, with Beckham being the exception to the rule. Now it appears to be any English player with Premier League experience - and they get fewer each year.
As both Hoddle and Venables had short careers as England's manager, can you come up with any more names who were jealous of LeTissier's skills, so would not select him?
Get real.
He was not the best that was available for England, only the best that was available for Saints.

Please by the result, but this was a Prem side with a number of key players missing, and really only warming up for 2-weeks time.
When we have Davies back in the middle next to Killer, and Davis back in goal - we could be the real deal!
Concern about the set piece debacle and the end of the first half - all too familiar.
Seen it written elsewhere - but West Ham do let you play. There are not many teams in the Championship let you do that. WBA managed to play ther way out of the league, but they had people who scored all over the park.
As for the crowd of 12,000+ - a reflection on time of year, and the fact it was a friendly. I wouldn't have gone even if I lived in So'ton, so I didn't stay away because of Lowe. Still won't come to SMS while he is there, but I will be at Derby when I get back from Egypt.
There is a lot to be positive about - but will we be out muscled? Will skill factor win out? I think our players may get kicked and intimidated in the league - but I'm hoping not.
Are they strong and fit enough to do it for 44-games?
Lots of questions only time will tell - don't forget Watford last year walking the league by a contry mile at Christmas and then faded badly. Only a week to go then it's for real.

I am over the moon at the reports given by those lucky enough to have seen the game last night. For the first time in several years we can actually look forward to the season. Well done JP and your team and three cheers for the youngsters. Still I can't understand why the sad supporters down the road have nothing better to do than post on our site. I have NO inclination to even visit theirs ( do they have one!!) cant wait to get to a game home or away.

Well done young Saints! i am really looking forward to this season and think can surprise a few people. It's great to see a manager who is prepared to give the Academy players their chance.
And the cricket is great too!

Last season your team was even worse than the one that was soundly thrashed 4-1 at Fratton Park, in the Old Days when you were sliding out of the Premier League.

Yes you are correct. I wonder who read that for you, because your command of the English language leaves a lot to be desired. eg what the hell is inbreding?
You did note that it was in the PREMIER LEAGUE, so you, my spotty faced friend, would not have been in contention, nor would the other by-products of Derby Road.
Call us what you like, whether it is Mongrels of Skates, it makes no difference because we would be Premier League Mongrels/Skates not Wannabe Scummers.

Oi True Blue (inbred), is that right your fans got voted the UGLIEST in the Premier League. Now theres a suprise,NOT. The years of inbreding are starting to show now,you should be called MONGRELS not SKATES. MONGrel, the new meaning for those who reside on that stinky litte island called TOILET-TOWN.
I note that your post was timed at 12.25am so guess you had just got home from attending the Gay Parade in Brighton. I hope you are sitting comfortably, then I'll begin.

I was at the game & was very happy with what I saw. I thought James & Surman did ok at full back positions, but feel we could definetly do with some cover. I just hope we don't loose any of our strikers & bring in a left back & a right back (hopefuly the moritz volz roumour is true). I also noticed that Kelvin Davis & Skacel weren't in the squad & as both players were linked with moves away, I believe these two players are most likely to be off (which could generate around 2 million). Sad to see Viafara go last wk, but that saves the club roughly 500k a year also. I beleieve if we can keep Stern John & Rasiak. Sign two half decent full backs & don't have too many injuries this season we will finnish top 6.
