On Monday we published an extract of Michael Wilde's exclusive column for the Daily Echo's pre-season supplement. Today we publish the whole unedited version from the Saints football board chairman.
AS we look forward to the start of a new season, it seems hard to imagine that only three months ago the club was only one Leicester goal away from relegation and possible administration.
As a Saints supporter, that is certainly not something I would ever wish to experience again.
advertisement
That experience made it absolutely clear to me that a fundamental change of direction was required if the club was to survive for any length of time outside the Premiership.
Unlike many other clubs, Saints has been blessed with Premiership quality facilities. But this blessing has proved to be a serious hindrance to our financial survival outside the top flight.
In this simple sense, the club has become a victim of its own success, a situation only made worse by fundamental structural inequities within the national game. If these inequities are not addressed by
the powers that be, I can easily see a situation where we will see the extinction of a significant number of league clubs over the coming few years.
Unfortunately, some supporters are becoming complacent about the threat of administration.
There is a belief that there will always be a "white knight" that will come to the rescue and that the club will always survive, in perpetuity for the benefit of the community and its supporters. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The ever increasing numbers of league clubs facing financial difficulty will inevitably lead, in my view, to the extinction of some of our most historic clubs should something not be done quickly to redress the financial imbalances that exist within the industry.
The recognition of this very real threat to our club led to a change of board composition during the close season.
There has been the introduction of a new streamlined structure designed to enable quick, efficient and effective decision making at a time of financial crisis, where the success or failure of the club could hinge on the board's ability to be responsive to the challenges facing it.
In making these changes, we have been able to remove petty politics from the boardroom, and have adopted what we believe to be a realistic and sensible approach to the problems facing the club.
The board is now fully focussed on both the financial survival of the club, and on ensuring that we remain competitive in football terms.
Although promotion may seem a long way off based on last season's performances, I believe that with the approach we have adopted, this is an achievable and realistic objective.
Of course, promotion cannot be guaranteed, but we must be able to make it the basis of our aspirations and ambitions at the beginning of every season.
This has required major changes at the club over the summer and has involved urgent and necessary cost cutting both on and off the field, and the introduction of a new coaching set up with an emphasis on
youth and entertaining football.
We believe that at a very fundamental level those working within the club must be committed, motivated, and have a desire for success above all things.
This has been reflected in our choice of coaching staff, and in the evolution of our first team squad where "playing for the shirt" has become an important part of our coaching philosophy.
As many will know by now, we intend to give our youngsters every chance to realise their true potential.
Age will not be a barrier if they are good enough.
Our approach has been, wherever possible, to renew or extend the contracts of our most talented young players to enable us to build a squad that can continue to improve over a number of seasons.
If this approach proves successful and promotion is attained, then our squad can largely be kept together and we can continue to evolve and grow as a team, rather than needing to undertake the major squad surgery, which usually accompanies elevation to a higher division.
We see long-term continuity as an essential element in bringing success.
In Jan Poortvliet and Mark Wotte we have two exemplary "no nonsense" coaches who fully understand the philosophy we are trying to bring.
I am delighted they agreed to join the Saints and help us realise our vision.
Jan and Mark, together with Dave Hockaday and Stewart Henderson, have had an intensive pre-season, getting to know the squad and understanding their strengths and weaknesses.
Players have been released or sold who do not fit into the style of play that we are seeking to introduce.
New players have been brought in who will be able to contribute positively to the new tactical approach. Motivation, application and professionalism, in addition to footballing quality, are now pre-requisites for our squad players. We realise that without these, success will be difficult to attain.
In this regard, the club has been fortunate in that it has an academy of some considerable quality, possessing a number of youngsters who are capable in the short to medium term of making the step
up to the first team and carving out a reputation for themselves.
We believe that our approach will reinforce our academy's reputation, and make the Saints the destination of choice for many of the country's top youngsters who are vying to make their mark in professional football.
Of course, any team requires a foundation based on strength and experience to hold it together and to successfully compete, particularly in the Championship.
We continue to seek the best blend of youth and experience with the more mature and experienced players in the squad acting as role models for the younger players - on and off the pitch.
Our goal is to develop a culture and squad capable, not only of attaining promotion to the Premiership, but also of staying there.
However, we must be realistic in the short-term as it may take some time to achieve our goal. For example, if the club fails to secure a swift promotion we must accept that in the future, it may be necessary to let some players go to other clubs to further their careers.
If this proves necessary, this will at least help provide us with the necessary financial resources to continue competing for promotion.
Player trading is vitally important for any club outside the Premiership, as is the ability to identify, attract and retain the most talented youngsters either from the UK or abroad.
Saints have been extremely successful in this regard in recent years and we will seek to ensure that this continues for the foreseeable future.
The success of Southampton Football Club and its parent company is totally dependent on success on the pitch and this will remain our absolute priority.
Whilst much is made of the land assets of the company possibly providing a financial lifeline to the club, in reality this will not manifest itself for many years, if at all.
The club must operate in the here and now and that is what your board is determined to do.
If further opportunities arise to improve the club's financial position, they will be examined on their merits at the time. This will hold equally true in respect of any bona fide offer received to acquire the share capital of the company.
With so many changes, the support and patience of our supporters will be crucial.
There is no magic wand that will guarantee promotion - simple dedication, commitment, and hard work is what will be required.
At the highest levels of sporting endeavour, confidence, belief, and mental strength can also make the difference between winning and losing.
This is where our supporters will be vital and where they can directly contribute to our success on the pitch.
With the strong and unwavering backing of our loyal supporters, especially when things do not appear to be going our way, I believe our team, and in particular our younger players, will be able achieve great things.
I, for one, am looking forward to the new season with optimism.
I am looking forward to seeing how our youngsters develop; to seeing exciting, attacking and enjoyable football, and to experiencing the ups and downs of the Championship season.
We are in a highly competitive division with very few points between a play-off place and a relegation berth.
If we can play well consistently, anything is possible.
Football has been plagued, for far too long, by the minority who take pleasure in playing the blame game and deriding other people's efforts.
There is no place for this attitude at Southampton Football Club.
We need to look beyond this, to be constructive, committed, to work hard, play hard, and then together, just maybe, we can achieve all that we desire.
Michael Wilde,
Southampton FC football club board chairman

I for one don't care what anybody else has to say on this story, but there was nothing in what M Wilde had to say that I wish to disagree with here. He's absolutely right that the next 2 0r 3 years are going to see the death of some historic clubs, and I would like SFC to be one of the clubs moving upwards towards financial safety rather than slipping further into debt and dying. Income cannot be increased massively at the moment, so the hard budgeting and cost cutting that has taken place make a lot of sense. I am quite happy about the new coaching structure and personnel that have come on board, and am looking forward to some exciting games to come.
I believe that some good performances on the pitch in the early part of the season will see match day numbers increasing, and with it, a small but steady increase in club revenue.
Without the fans, the club cannot continue at this level, and I think it would be short sighted to stay away from the ground in some kind of protest against the board, whatever your feelings are, unless people really do want Saints to die!
I'm a Saints fan, and would be whoever ran the club and wherever we are in the league (or in what league) so all I'm interested in is next Saturday and beyond. Success would be brilliant, but I'll take whatever comes along this season

Reading this I get the impression the board is trying to build a business around the football team where previously, when Lowe was chairman, my impression was the team was just part of a business. I am encouraged even more now by the changes that have been made since Lowe and Wilde have returned.

I dont think that anybody can realistically disagree with anything that is said here, I am sure that there will be a few who have gambled this year like we did last and will find the going tough financially if it fails to come off with highly paid "stars", which can only help teams like us - assuming that the finances are going in the right direction.
Support the team, with good start to the season I'm sure we will see the moaners start drifting back which only goes to improve finances even more.

Why is Wilde getting so much coverage by the Daily Echo ?
Wilde has credibility and is all PR spin with no substance.
Lets start talking about the £2million investment Wilde "PR'D" in 2007.

This is quite a lucid, objective statement by our chairman.
In fact, I'm getting very encouraged by the new realistic and (mostly) postive breeze that is beginning to blow around St. Mary's. After such devisiveness and abject negativity surrounding the club over the last year, I now feel the once proud ''spirit of Southampton'' is returning again. Yes, I was anti Lowe, Wilde, Poortvliet...but now I can see some changes and what's trying to be achieved..and I'm completely on board.
Our new approach is clearly the way forward..not just for us, but surely for most other championship clubs who, like us, can't attract Sugar Daddy's.
I just hope we can prove the doubters wrong..and I hope we can win back the fans that are still disollusioned with the current setup. Our club needs everyone's support right now. Jump on the promotion train..next seasons gonna be one heck of a ride!.
The future's bright - the future's red & white.

No doubt the gullible lemmings will lap up this PR masterpiece.
When it all goes wrong what will Mikey say then ?
Having said that is this the same Mike Wilde that brought Hone, Dulieu et all into SFC and these same people hijacked the club for most of 2007 ?
After posing on thesaintsforum and making a total idiot of himself when exposed you would of thought the idiot would be in hiding.
New chairman please ! One with credibilty

Let's say Saints do get promoted and then benefit from the wealth of the Premiership. Do you honestly think for one minute that Wilde will give a toss about other clubs in financial difficulties !?!?
Course he won't. He's just using these well worn story about finances to make some gullible fans feel that only Lowe and Wilde are the ones who can save us.
Such is their ego, such is the fantasy world these two live in.
The absolute first and foremost priority for Michael Wilde is to get back the money he spent on shares. The second priority is to make a profit on those shares. The third priority is Saints fortunes. Yes, those three maybe linked, but Mr Wilde, spare us all the blubbering emotional blackmail. It don't wash.

Biggest losers will be the creditors, many small Southampton businesses trade with Saints. Administration could mean disaster for them.
Administration MUST be avoided at all cost and I believe that the (like it or not) best solution lies with the new regime in the Boardroom.

Tracy, Wiltshire Saint and Ray:
Very well said! Do not be put off by the whingers having a go at you for your positive views. I do not give a toss who wrote the Echo report - everything in it makes sense. I am neither pro nor anti Lowe and the Board. I simply want Saints to shine this season, and I think there is reason for them to do so.
I genuinely believe the anti-Lowes (not all, but most) would dearly love to see the Club fail so that they can say 'I told you so!"
Well, not for me, I support the Team and its manager and coaching staff. Always have, always will. I do not care who is in charge on the Board, as long as he/she/they run a tight ship with financial prudence. Then let the team do the talking for us on the Park.
Tracy, Wiltshire Saint and Ray, thank God for supporters like you!!

I agree some "fans" would like to see the club fail, that is evident by some of the posts on these message board and inparticular those who want the club to go bust (how can a fan want their club to go bust?)

Err... anyone at the game? I went, first half brilliant fast, passing football. Second half, team changed, Rasiak, Dyer, Phillips Etc back to same old rubbish, boring football.
I am excited!!!! not one long ball, only Surman gave the goal away, brilliant goal, quick throw ins, free kicks, short goal kicks. The kids in the first half outplayed premiership opposition.
If I were a Stoke fan I would put money on doing worse than Derby...!!

cough up real money etc etc:
What makes you think you are the only season ticket holder who goes to SMS? What makes you think Tracy et al doesn't have a season ticket and doesn't go to SMS? Do you have the evidence, or are you just spouting off without real thought for the facts?
You are a typical moaner and whinger who, because you do not like Lowe and the Board, wants to see Saints and SFC fail. Well mate, you are not a supporter at all with your stay away 'lets hope they fail' attitude!
I too have held a season ticket for a long time - apart from a short break in the nineties for over 30 years, so wind your neck in! I want SFC to survive and be successful. I don't give a toss who is in charge at Board level - I just want to see success again, and I will do my bit by being there every home match and a good deal of aways too. OK, I was unable to attend tonight's friendly, but once the season kicks off, I will be there.
If you have had enough, then go away and don't bother posting on here. True supporters will support the team through thick and thin, regardless of results, league status or who is in charge.
SMS will be richer without your so called support.

Why would I want to get a baby sitter for? I do not have any children.
Just how old am I then as you have had your season ticket for more years that I have been on this earth.
When have I ever said Lowe is great? I've only said I think he is the right person for the current task of sorting out the finances.
Yes sure I'm optimistic. I believe things can go well this season, should I be a doom munger like so many people are in these forums instead? Is that what would qualify me as a 'true fan'? or maybe I am a 'true fan' because I attend matches regardless of who the chairman is?

Turn coat Wilde you are a joke!
Why is your colums censored, when there is a overwhelm dislike to you showen by so many fans on this sight. So much so the piece is removed and replaced with another verson of your spin!
You got us in this mess. You have changed your allegiance when it suits you so many times already! You always come out with clever words and then deliver nothing. You say this is the way, then no this is the way. The way to Liverpool is north!Your only aim at this time is design to split the fans and cover your mess.
Don't blame others!Don't look to turn facts into an aid tool to suit your purpose. You owe all Saints fans a big apologie, and your not man enough to do so. Talk is cheap! You and the board need to deliever action, not excuses! Really hope more is not coming later, as you obviouly have it all qued up in your comments.

How tired I am of reading all the negatives about Rupert and Co.
He may not be a born and bred Saint, but he IS a successful businessman and organisor.
I've been a Saints supporter since Charlie Wayman got the goals (who he, you'll say!)
I've also put my money where my mouth is and bought 10,000 share a few months ago - they've lost 10% but so has everything on the stock market.I bought the shares because of my passion for the Saints. How many of you moaners are prepared to buy even a few hundred shares? (only 27p at the moment)Can't you all understand that the Club (and PLC Company) has been transormed in just a few months and saved from oblivion? Understand that this is a business, not a private club. In the few months that Lowe has been back (whatever you think of him)we have returned to sensible financial management.
It's most unlikely we'll get promotion this season, and if we did it would be a Derby County repeat. Let's look for a consolidation and upper half of table and take it from there.
Meanwile COYR!

Peter Godwin:
Good post - some more optimism. Blimey, my friend, you are giving your age away talking about Charlie Wayman!! He joined Ted Bates in 1947 I believe, and retired from Saints just a few years later. If I remember correctly he scored around 100 goals for Saints! (I saw some of them!!)
I better shut up, or I will be disclosing my advancing years!!

there is a distinction here..the pro Lowe & wilde fans are the intelligent ones who are interested in the football, and though i despise stains I think Lowe is doing a good job
the whingers and anti Lowe fans are the same uncouth, unintelligent bunch who are known as the stain yellow bellies. All they can do is sing anti lowe songs, slag off the team, add nothing constructive, then run away very fast
ho hum sums it up

I would just like to say to all those people who keep saying they hate the board members for "ripping the heart" out of the club, please take your blinkers and rose-coloured spectacles off, and speak to supporters of a few other clubs.
I think you will find they are saying exactly the same, the PRODUCT of FOOTBALL has changed beyond recognition in recent times and this is not the fault of the chairman of this club, or any other.
Blame the greed of players and their agents taking money out of football, if things continue how they are the bubble will burst and, as Wilde says, many historic clubs WILL fold.
Some people are prepared to stick with it to stop it happening, others are hiding under the table reminiscing about the good old days.

My wife got me a meagre 500 shares for my 60th. I don't know what she paid but we both laugh at the current 32p.
I smiled at the post which says you brought the shares to make money. I got my shares because I love the Club and if I had any more money I would have gone for a few thousand myself.
I believe in telling it as it is and I agree that something is very different this season from the last 2.
With a little bit of hindsight (I hate looking back) I sort of had a revelation that George Burley was actually a very, very poor Manager ande I think that is when the rot set in.
We now appear to have a strong management team, a financially sensible Board, some good young players (maybe a little bit of attitude from some of the "senior" players - not sure yet) and a fan base that is beginning to wake up to the fact that the Club will die unless they support it.
And above all, if we get promotion Graham and Peter become offical "fat cats" wallowing in our new found wealth and 2p dividend.
Up the Saints!!!

What Wilde says in his article is positive and enthusiastic and this all helps to promote a level of confidence in the players to do well. I don't give a monkeys whether Wilde means what he says just as long as the team does well this season.

I think Harry Redknap was worse he seemed to only be using us to get a better wage out of Pompey and jumped ship as soon as they offered. Or how about Steve Wigley who managed to lie to 30,000 people that he knew why all those big men were kicking that little sack of air all over the pitch. A long ball merchant who's transfer policy was to go out and waste huge sums of money on lumps of **** that he was frindly with. Neil Macan, Gavin Strachen , and Paul Telfer spring to mind. He left us with a legacy of poor players and a poor style of football.

I've been a Saints supporter since Charlie Wayman got the goals (who he, you'll say!) I've also put my money where my mouth is and bought 10,000 share a few months ago - they've lost 10% but so has everything on the stock market.I bought the shares because of my passion for the Saints.
Be honest...you only bought the shares cos you thought you'd be buying in at the bottom and get a nice fat return on them when they go up. Hey, why didn't I think of that before...I'm gonna buy some shares in Saints too and make me a fortune! How's that for optimism.
Good on you, Peter.
Not sure about the burley comment. I think Harry Redknap was worse he seemed to only be using us to get a better wage out of Pompey and jumped ship as soon as they offered. Or how about Steve Wigley who managed to lie to 30,000 people that he knew why all those big men were kicking that little sack of air all over the pitch. What you can't see is what their Operating Expenditure is to their Income/Revenue. I'll take a reasoned guess that they are running at considerably more than a £5m pa loss.
Difference 'down the road' is that they have an owner/benefactor who is currently investing large amounts of money (don't ask where it comes from!) in the expectation of making a large profit when he sells up.
Don't for one minute be under the illusion that 'Sacha' is a philanthropist. He's not and nor are his (allegedly) gun running partners. The Russian 'biznezmen' are ruthless. They won't continue to pump money into the club if the new stadium/housing/shop
ping development does not go ahead.
Also, anybody done the numbers on the transfer dealings since 'Arry has been involved? I'd wager that the ins and outs balance sheet including agents fees (excluding Muntari) will be showing a considerable loss.
Much as it hurts to see their success, I know where I'll rather be in this and forthcoming seasons.

I believe that in their last years accounts - P*mpey had a loss of £23M.
Timebomb waiting to explode.
IMHO
BTW on the subject of this thread, Wilde may have changed his tune. A poster known as 'Saintmarc' on TSF gave a viewpoint in the last 12 months of the future which involved property development surrounding the stadium and in the Southampton area.
The theory was to not rely on the performance of the FC to finance the PLC.
Many on TSF alleged that Saintmarc was MW - don't know if that is true or not...
[bold]Seems like he's changed his mind on that as well then...or has he?
There's a question to ask - anyone from the Echo willing to take the plunge?[/bold]

i currently work for a business that, due to circumstances in the current property market, is struggling to survive with a vastly reduced income compared with our 'premiership' status last year. we have had to implement a number of cost cutting measures which includes staff redundacy, reviewing our suppliers, advertising less etc... what we feel we have done is streamlined the business so that we can react swiftly to any changes that may occur to either take advantage or avoid further financial pressures. this was the right thing to do as i'm sure most of you would agree, to safeguard the future of the business.
you can see where i'm going with this, right?
lowe and wilde have done what is required. they have a duty of care.
what is now vitally important is that we support the team on matchday and give them the confidence to play knowing they have the will of the fans behind them.

Did he go to a public shool?
Does he use words like 'bunkum'?
If so, he deserves all abuse that is thrown at him.
If not, then he is a sensible businessman, making the best out of a difficult situation and deserves your respect and admiration.

Firstly, I think the ‘vision’ on the pitch is not flawed, we are not going to lose every game - I like the new coaches and think we have a chance of success. Now to the real issue out there affecting fans and the fact that whether the prozac fans like it or not, we have a problem that is not just going to simply disappear in a puff of smoke.
The return of Rupert Lowe.
Reasons to dislike Rupert that have nothing to do with his accent or any other lifestyle issues.
• A catalogue of errors that led to our relegation
• Not investing significantly in the team in our first season as relegated
• Blaming everyone but himself for any problems
• Alienating the core fans who have been there through tick and thin
• Spending the club’s money on his own personal PR battle when what the club needed was investment on the pitch
But most of all…
Just not being man enough or just have some humility to admit that he’d made poor decisions that concluded with our relegation from the Premier League when it didn’t need to happen.
Now, if he would come out, admit that he’d made mistakes that has led to our massive demise, that he has learned from them, that he is getting a much reduced salary and no expenses he’ll get a little more respect.
Unfortunately, this is a man who told his own PR team that he could defeat the media (egomaniacal) and has the humility of a despotic African leader. I am not stupid enough to think he is going anywhere but when 20,000 or more stood for him to go, for him to come back sticks in the neck. The people had their say and the people have subsequently been pi$$ed all over by his return – does this not make sense to anyone with a modicum of understanding of what it takes to be principled!
Saints do still belong to the city and 5,000 last night, 12,000 against West Ham reveals much of what the people in this city feel deep in their hearts. This feeling is not going to go away just because fans who are going slate those that aren’t. Is that what we want anyway?
So, message to Rupert is do some of the above Rupert and you may begin to win the fans over and get them in to provide them with the revenue you require to run your business. Do not underestimate the ‘customer’ you so desperately need.
