Saints 2 Stoke 3 - Pericard nets on St Mary's return
Vincent Pericard
Vincent Pericard

FORMER Saints loanee Vincent Pericard netted on his return to St Mary's tonight.

The striker didn't manage a goal during his time at Saints under Nigel Pearson last season, but he hit the target in Stoke's 3-2 friendly win.

The Premier League newcomers took the lead in typical fashion after just two minutes, Mamady Sidbie working a free kick in the direction of new £5.5m striker Dave Kitson who needed no second invitation to lash past Kelvin Davis on the half volley.

Half chances came and went for both sides with David McGoldrick's flicked header wide of goal and Adam Lallana's skip past two challenges and low effort into the side netting the best of them.

McGoldrick had a decent looking penalty appeal turned down before Saints did equalise on 37 minutes.

It was a great move with Morgan Schneiderlin's pass down the right wing finding Simon Gillett. He got to the by-line and cut back to McGoldrick who finished low first time past Steve Simonsen.

For long periods the second half was a bit of a turgid affair, much more like a Championship game.

It took until 66 minutes for anything of note to happen in the second period, sub keeper Thomas Sorensen palming away Jamie White's curling shot.

Bradley Wright-Phillips took advantage of a fumble from Sorensen seven minutes later to get an effort on target but Andy Wilkinson was in position to get the ball off the line.

However, on 73 minutes Stoke went up the other end and took the lead.

There didn't seem to be too much danger as Pericard came forward with the ball but from 25 yards out he pulled the trigger, slipping as he did so, and the ball flew past Bartosz Bialkowski.

Stoke's lead lasted just three minutes as Saints hit back.

Grzegorz Rasiak, playing in the hole in the second half, drifted out to the left and crossed to the far post where Stern John was waiting and arrowed an excellent header into the top corner for 2-2.

However, the scoring wasn't done there as Stoke took a 3-2 lead on 82 minutes in unfortunate circumstances for Saints.

Pericard knocked the ball round Bialkowski in the area and looked set to dodge past him and slide into an empty net - only for Jamie Hatch to storm in and divert the ball into his own net.

A good result considering we fielded two completely different teams. When we start playing with the same team week-in, week-out then we'll start to see some rewards for all the effort. Bring on the new season! COYR!

Hmmm - I'm not quite sure how some people can be so positive about this - we lost AT HOME to a team that were a little fortunate to get promoted last season and who will almost certainly be relegated this season. If we are to have any chance of doing anything this season, it is matches against teams like this at home that we MUST win!

To me it is looking like we could be in for a repeat of last season, with too many soft goals conceded and too many good chances wasted. Believe me, I want to see players like Jamie White given their chance, but I believe we must also have some more experience in the side.

Personally, I would love it if we could somehow raise the cash to bring in a more experienced full-back or two, but I guess that is just a pipe-dream!

Oh come on!!!! Scored 4 goals in 2 games against premiership sides.....nevermind the soft goals against (tonights decider was an og!). We're scoring, and McGoldrick's looking like another class youngster with a future. I'm really excited with this new look squad and I'm sure we'll be top half of the table looking at play offs once the first choice team is set in stone.
COME ON SAINTS!!!

get serious jacko weve got teenagers and they've got a new £5.5m striker we need to build from the ground up so i say these two games are a great start in a long process. I say "well done lads keep it up"

Went to game tonight. Great performance from the youngsters, however a couple of points.
1) Where was Killer, does anyone know why he didn't play, I hope not injured again?
2) Whilst we have great pace and there was some good passing of the ball our defence was still not winning many of the balls in the air and I think this will be a problem this season.
3) Whilst not wanting to appear prejudice against many, of which there are many of our shorter players in this squad, we lack height in our team!
4) Very bgored of hearing the same old song from some of the crowd about "when I was young/my mother use to say/wash your mouth my son, etc, etc!' Perhaps a few more pro saints anthems are needed, any up and coming songwriters in the academy??!!

I think the lads did quite well tonight. There was an abismal attendance of only 5000 or so however stoke only bought about 10 of those. First half we looked very good, so I am feeling quite hopefull about the new season. Second half we looked a bit lightweight I thought. The quicker we sell Rasiak and Bradley **** Phillips the better both looked useless tonight! Although who will pay for them god only knows.

The biggest downfall of our team at the moment... (and i hate to say it) is our supporters! for god sake lets just get behind the boys on the pitch..regardless, and give them some support!!!! afterall..we are supporters aren't??? Its going to be a while before we can even contemplate competing in the premiership!! we have a great youth set up coming through the ranks, and and we have to be patient. LETS STOP MOANING AND START SUPPORTING!!!! Its not that hard to work out is it?????

We played attractive football at times, lacked a little stature against a tall physical side, but we matched them, out played them for much of the game, were faster and fitter too, and actually played football on the deck. Stoke were predictable, long ball, long throws. The younsters will get better, and thats a mouth watering prospect. soft goals are a worry, but I suspect killer would have handled them better. We do need his steel at the back, I really think he could make the difference between a ok season and a great season.

Its great to see a saints side playing with skill and confidance, nieve perhaps, but so much more entertaining than the cynical pros that sucked the life from the team over the last couple of seasons.

Listen, l am Lowes biggest critic,l cannot stand the guy.
But what l saw tonight was absolutely fantastic especially the youngsters in the first half.
They completely outplayed Stoke and if they would have come out in the second half, there was only going to be one winner.
Lowe has made many mistakes, without doubt, but l honestly feel this time he has got it spot on with the new management.
As l have said,l cannot stand Lowe, but if he is doing right for SFC l am prepared to finnally put all my differences to one side once and for all.
Lets just all forget about the past and look to the future with a clean slate.
Because l have been watching the Saints since the early 70,s,and what l saw tonight was brilliant.
Stoke had three shots and scored three goals, but thats football.
This bunch will get us back up,it might take a few seasons but on the evidence of tonights game its not if but when.
Its time for all of us to move forward together.

Stoke fan in peace, was at the game and i have to say that we did not deserve a win tonight but i think a draw would have been fair. im surprised that many Stoke fans turned up - between 2 and 3 hundred. no disrespect but we dont have any great rivalry and its a long way for a Tuesday night friendly!

Saints played good football and had us outpaced but outplayed? No! Had Lawrence and fuller played it would have been a different game as they have pace and both are good finishers. players like parkin and pulis are league one at best so dragged us down, we need to get rid of them as its unlikely they will feature next year. creswell and sidibe looked tired and contributed little.

As said above you let in far too many soft goals last season and on tonights showing will do so again next. You need a good centre half and a bit more height at the back and muscle up front. A few good spells from both teams and both teams goals well taken. (our 3rd excluded :D)

Good luck for this season

With Andrew Davies and Killer added to last nights team we look a decent side. It is certainly much better than the doom and gloom merchants made it out to be a few days ago!!!!
I am genuinely excited about the new season, we might not go up but we look like we will give anyone a run for their money and playing attractive football.
I hope the anti brigade either get behind this exciting young team or stay away and give them a chance to develop. COYR

How many games in the league will we play using 22 players?! No Killer, No Andrew Davies!

It was what it was, a pre-season friendly! Start judging us in about October.

I agree about the support - tragic. That has to be the wierdest football game I've been to at a big stadium!!

Where were all the people who went to West Ham with their half price Stoke tickets?

People are always wingeing that the club has no money but won't put their hands in their pockets. I know the cost of living has gone up and it's mid-week blah blah but you'd think with tickets being half price people would make an effort.

Anyhoo, rant over! I don't think we played as well last night as we did against West Ham - and please God, don't let Thomas start on Saturday - but there's hope for the season ahead. Last season our biggest problem was a lack of passion for the team and willingness to play well. I saw that passion back in pre-season and with the young'uns coming in, it looks like the more experienced players have had a wake-up call and are fighting for their place in the first team.

Bring on the Taffies............C

It was another good performance. Especially, coming back from 1-0 down. I was worried for a while. But after an excellent Davies save, it was all Saints

The only reason that Svensson wasn't playing is that 3 games in just over a week would be too risky after so long out. That means that he should be OK for Cardiff. What a bonus that is. And as our central defence looked to be the only real weakness we should be heartened by our performance. In truth, most of the problems were due to a lack of height at the back.

When we get Davis fit as well we will have one of the best defenses in the Division.

I thought we were OK in the second half as well with one or two good performances. For example, no one from the first half could have scored Stern's goal. I can see him coming off the bench to score a few, certainly to change the type of game being played if required.

BWP and Rasiak - no comment!

The player who keeps disappointing ids Dyer. It wasn't lack of effort but he never seems to quite make it. People think he is lightning fast but I say his pace is deceptive. He's slower than he looks! He never seems to be able to get outside of the fullback and deliver a good cross. He managed it once last night thanks to a killer pass inside the fullback which gave him a head start.

BTW it was Bialkowski in goal...
What has happened to him? He looked good when we first got him had the spell out injured and now seems a shadow of the player he was.

The central defense while v.poor last night was not entirely to blame for their two goals. The other players failed to pick up players arround the man who won the ball in the air, he should effectively be isolated from his nearest teammate then we dont have to worry about winning every ball we jump for. We need to improve this and to stop going to sleep every time the ball goes dead otherwise we are in for another long season.
Still in attack we seem to be gaining genuine confidence and are actively seeking to take men on with the ball. Thought Lallana once or twice showed some real promise. Stern John and Rasiak seemed to be competing with one another for the worst pass/shot which was brilliant.

I wish everyone would stop moaning. Im sooooooooooo bored with most people being so negative! We are not the only club in this position. Think about Charlton, Watford etc they need to sell to keep afloat aswell and they were only relegated the season before last. I think that JP has done a marvellous job on a shoe string budget! We have talent like Holmes and Schneiderin bought for next to nothing. I think people should get real! This club must live within its means. I wonder if we got off to a really good start, would all the stay-aways come crawling back out from under their stones? I think so!

So stop moaning- this club is being run within its means. Im not a Lowe Fan either, but we have to get real- COME AND SUPPORT THE SAINTS NOT RUPERT LOWE!

we went to the match last night. And for once I was a proud Saints fan. The boys are on fire and I recommend everyone makes at least one home game visit this season. Was fun that only a 1/4 on St Mary's filled up. Nice atmosphere, apart from the three chavs in front of us who managed to get thrown out. What a skill, get chuked out of a home, friendly, non-league game. Durrr.

You cannot buy tickets online for any club without pre-registering first, otherwise segregation would be a complete waste of time.

All the details on saintsfc.co.uk look ok to me.

I am a Pompey fan. I went to the ticket booth marked 'Away Fans', paid my money and sat with the Stoke supporters. No problem.

Personally, I think that segregation in football grounds has caused more problems than it solved. It immediately locates and identifies 'the enemy', which makes it so much easier for those who want to cause trouble. There are many 'loud-mouthed heroes' who will shout threats and abuse from the safety of their enclosure, but would not be so heroic if they were sat near to a big, muscular opposition supporter!
