Saints need to confound history
Egil Ostenstad
Egil Ostenstad

SAINTS will be bidding to throw the history books out of the window at Ninian Park this weekend.

In the last 20 seasons, they have only twice won their opening game of a league campaign - and one of those was in the first of those seasons, 1988/89.

Back then Paul Rideout scored twice on his debut in a 4-0 Dell romp against West Ham.

Glenn Cockerill and sub Matt Le Tissier also netted.

The only other time in the last two decades Saints have started with a three-pointer was in 1999. That was when Egil Ostenstad's late winner gave them a 1-0 victory at Coventry.

Only 2 wins in the last 20 opening fixtures? I personally blame Rupert Lowe for this terrible record on the basis that he's posh and likes hockey!

I blame him anyway (got to blame someone)

Rupert Lowe is innocent. It was someone else what done it, what ever it was. I don't know who did it but you must all stop being beastly to my hero Rupert Lowe the saviour of SFC. Just remember it was he who got us into the Premiership in the first place, it was he who enabled us to produce great young players, something we had never done before. No one but Rupert could have got us a new stadium and I am sure that if Gordon Strachan had played Rupert in the Cup final team then we would have won the cup. Just remember that this club would have been nothing without our good old Rupert so stop being nasty to him. Attend the games and give him your money and stop having a mind of your own. Be like all of us Lowe luvvies and just stupidly, blindly, deferently hand him your money. He knows best what to do with it which is not to invest it in strengthening the playing squad. Be like me and love Rupert and hate all those nasty people who are horrid to him. Rupert does not deserve all the abuse directed at him for he has made Saints the great club they once were! God bless Rupert Lowe the man who made Southampton Football club and made us the envy of all other football fans.

Dear FailedAtEnglish,

I think stripey realised the sarcasm of Warrington Saint and decided to blame Lowe anyway (adding more sarcasm by saying "got to blame someone").

Did you really not get the double sarcasm?

He doesn't worry me I live in a suitcase but the downside is that I frequently get this blokes hand shoved up my backside. Maybe mr Lowe will take a potshot at him for me.

Christ, what a humorless bunch of people post on this site. Even the most minor joke just sails over everyone' heads and brings down more abuse.

Top tip - don't use irony, people just don't get it.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to about the new season is moronic chanting from Saints fans about killing Portsmouth supporters. Perhaps, given that we can't unite around the Board, the Chairman, or the Team, we could unite around the fact that songs about gun crime just aren't funny any more. Really not funny.

meaning of rupert (just for fun):

Rupert is derived from the Latin Rupertus, which is a loan from the Old German Hroberahtus; thus it is a variation of modern English Robert.

The name Robert is derived from Germanic roots hrod and beraht or berht meaning "fame" and "bright". After becoming widely used in Continental Europe it entered England, where an Anglo-Saxon cognate of the name also already existed with the Normans.

I thought shall I respond or go and cut my grass with nailclippers. Alternatively I could go and polish my lightbulbs.

I think I'll go and polish the lightbulbs and inwardly consider how you begin to measure people's misunderstanding of the real world.

I'll finish by saying "Attend the games and give him your money and stop having a mind of your own. Be like all of us Lowe luvvies and just stupidly, blindly, deferently hand him your money." is a mark of the silliness of the poster.

Just remember that ARMY of VAT Inspectors, Inland Revenue staff who pore over the Cluib's books.

The money goes into the player's budget, it buys us better players, it pays off the Club debts, it gives us a future. It pays for the Academy, it brings in the new blood of bright young players, yes, it gave us a new Stadium - the pride of the South Coast!!!!!!!

Never mind who claims the glory, it was the fans who paid for it.

Look forward, not back.

Now, where's my duster? Those light bulbs need a good old polish.

I must first add how annoying it is that everyone on this site appears sooooo gloomy. We all know the score, we have a young team, a new coaching team and Mr Lowe in charge but we are still a Championship Club and we will remain a Championship at the very least until the conclusion of this season. That's 44(?) matches for us to get behind the lads, accept the decisions and keep the faith. On the basis of what I've seen so far, we can be proud of our youngsters and it's not inconceivable that we could actually have a good season. Let's at least try to be positive please.
Moaning aside - what'll team be for Saturday? First game of the season, away from home...JP would be happy with a draw, so a pretty defensive line-up to start I think; Davies, James, Perry, Svennsen, Surman, Wotton, Dyer, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Holmes, John

I wonder what the derivation of "Woopert" is.

Probably Hollywood circa 1963.

The only trouble with Hollywood is that you need a bit of alliteration (Can't be bothered to check the spelling).

So you end up with Woopert

Rubbish.
John has figured in pre-season games, as has virtually every player not injured.
But John did not start against West Ham or Stoke, and is not in the team that Jan has already said is his starting 11 for Cardiff.

Or didn't anyone tell you????

Try going to a game every now and then, you might even enjoy it!

A club is measured by its fan base, Man U 70000 for a friendly last night. We get 5000 and our fans are split on many issues and argue, The only income is from the fan base, its about time Lowe tried to build bridges with the fans as it is clear to all of us as the main reason for the split is him. All you get is F**K off if you dont like Lowe well if we do their wont be a club.

If you dont like G Brown you wont be told to leave the UK then.
Come on its time to start to pull together before its to late.;

I dont think that money is necesarily what is needed in this leauge. I would be extremely suprised if Derby and Birmingham go up, even though they have spent millions. I think its more important that you have a team that gel together and we certainly have one of those! So lets all get behind the boys. Less of the negativity, it just splits the fans and makes for a dreary atmousphere. You never know we might have a fantastic season!

There are a few of us who have seen this team. The rest of the posters are going on history, media betting odds and a dislike of the board.

The people who see this young team play great football don't care about anything else.

The first match of the season, as soon as those who haven't seen this team, see them pinging the ball around, working their socks off and the sheer pace of it are going to be boweled over. Any thoughts of Rupert Lowe will be forgotten, just delighting in how the team is playing.

For experience read slow, lethargic, poor passing, long balls. The older players that have played with the youngsters with the exception of Svennson and Perry have looked out of place.

I find it hard to justify McGoldrick playing ahead of John and Raisak too. In the Stoke game he did very little apart from score his goal. He offered no threat in the air,his marker constantly beat him to the first header and at times his positional play was terrible. Would much rather see John in that role as at the moment his all round play is much better.

Don't use irony MC? You seem to. And what does the word christ mean? I am from the planet Earth.

Chin Chin.
