Should Surman be back in the team?

THE key to Saints' survival could well be an attacking midfield over the last few games.

England under-21 international Andrew Surman has not been a regular since Nigel Pearson took over but there is little doubt he has the talent to change a game.

Do you think Surman should lead the way?

And, taking injuries into account, what would be your ideal midfield to boost Saints' chances of staying in the championship.

He's a great player on his day, but like most of the squad he's very much a confidence player.

I think perhaps we expect too much of him, forgetting that he is still only 21 or so.

He is an important player, but we shouldn't be building the team around him - he's just not ready for that sort of pressure.

whats the point of building the team around him, he wont even be here next season!!! If we get relegated or not!!

I'd go for a midfield of (l-r) Euell, Surman, Safri and Dyer, with places on the bench for Viafara and Hammill.

If we still had Skacel though, he'd be the first name down on the team sheet every time.

I agree he is a tidy player but needs to put on about two stone of upper body weight, so that a gentle breeze doesn`t knock him off balance.

he has lost a lot of stamina and confidence this season, but hopefully he can play differently under the new manager, maybe keep him in the left back slot

Alan, you are being abit harsh. I believe Drew Surman is a Southampton lad and really does care about what happens to 'his' Club which is more than can be said about most of the players at the Club at the moment. I don't think he will jump ship if we stay up - he is getting in the England Under 21 squad even though he is playing at Saints.

Here's to 3 points tomorrow - See you at Charlton.

I would use him at left back for the time being....

GK - Wright
LB - Surman
RB - Ostland
CB - Thomas
CB - Perry/Lucketti

LMF - Hammill
RMF - Licka
CMF - Viafara
CMF - Safri

CF - John
CF - BWP

We lack depth and quailty but I still believe we can win tomorrow!

COYR!

I hope you don't mind me asking, but is this Surman the same Surman that the SFC customers were ready to crucify a couple of weeks back?

Posted by: Alex, Horsham on 5:27pm Fri 11 Apr 08
Agree with Dan, Soton's line up though would not play Thomas, he's just a bit of a donkey to be honest, especially considering how well Perry and Lucketti played together.

Come on Saints 2-0 on Saturday, John and BWP

Excellent point, very well made. There can be no argument Sam I'm afraid.

You obviously were not at the Bristol game considering the two centre backs were the best players on the pitch(Perry & Lucketti) Also Euell had his best game yet in a Saints shirt so not sure why NP would drop him, also Wright had a decent game.

Only the miserable few Sam. Please don't tar everyone etc. Not good or fair practice.

Surman would not make the top half dozen nominees for player of the year, that tells it's own story.
If you compare him to last season when he had Bale and Skacel to compliment him there is no contest.
Any scout watching him lately would be wasting his time, he just has not stood out from the rest.
Once we get someone in with a left foot and pace we'll start to see what's in his locker.
I'm at work again so good luck today.
COYS.

Was it a coincidence that, although there were a lot of postings on here by a person calling themselves 'People in glass houses' or some such name, questioning the honesty and integrity of Harry Redknapp, that when I mentioned the name Grobbelar, the posts on that subject were pulled!
I wonder! Did I break a pane of glass in their greenhouse?

Or perhaps they were taken down because they had nothing to do with the question asked in the article?
