Pedal car Grand Prix draws out the stars and the crowds
 |
| Rory McGrath |
THOUSANDS of people
turned out to watch the
British Pedal Car Grand
Prix in Ringwood yesterday.
Desmond Swayne, MP for New
Forest West, waved the flag to start
the race.
There were cheers as drivers
from 35 teams navigated the
course in the centre of the town
for two hours, competing to complete
the most laps in the time.
Celebrities Rory McGrath, pictured
above, and Paddy
McGuinness also took part, as
part of a TV series to do with
wacky sports.
The annual race raised £15,000
for charity this year.
The Tenovus cancer research
laboratory at Southampton and
Lymington's Oakhaven hospice
will share half of the money
raised.
The other half will be split
between Ringwood's Young
Firefighters' Association and the
British Liver Trust - both charities
are backed by the town's
mayor, Cllr Brian Terry.
Ringwood's streets were
renamed for the race in honour of
the principal supporters.

No mention of the completly ludicrous decision to close a small section of main road resulting in a 10-15 minute diversion, surely there had to be a better way!

Absolutely brilliant day out for the whole family more events like this should be held to boost community spirits, as oppossed to moaning about small diversions.

[italic][bold]Ringwood’s British Pedal Car Grand Prix[/bold][/italic]
It takes 12 months to obtain a road closure which has to satisfy ALL emergency services and ALL other parties such as highways which includes the ROAD DIVERSION which in turn has to handle articulated lorries. Apologies for inconvenience caused.
If anyone could build a 200ft bridge for 2010 we will present this as part of the road closure.
[bold]FUN BEGINS HERE:[/bold]
Ringwood’s British Pedal Car Grand Prix
With the sun shining on 15 deep crowds at the amazing the 21st anniversary of Ringwood’s British Pedal Car Grand Prix, celebrities Rory McGrath racing in Team No 1 BARTON MOMENTS & Paddy McGuinness in Team 19 BARTON PUPS flew in complete with their production company Channel 5 to make an hour long programme to be shown soon.
The Wave 105, Team No 2 came in 17th place as Wave’s presenters Andy Jackson and Steve Power gave it everything they had and covered 53 laps and wishing that they had trained a little more seriously for the GP.
Only 10 seconds separated winning Team No 28 GREAT CENTRAL RACING and Team No 33 RADIO ACTIVE RACING, having completed 66 laps of Ringwood’s of the one kilometre race circuit. Mike Lingham-Wilgoss provided the exhilarating race commentary as teams were fighting tooth and nail for the top prize with teams locking wheels and tipping on to two wheels, only just recovering before crashing out.
2006 winners PATERSON BANGERS picked up third place with 64 laps completed.
PINK PANTHERS, Team 31 were the Concours D’elegance winners for best judged car and 13 year old team leader Katie Stride received the gleaming Trophy and bottle of champagne. Best under 16’s went to Team 34 CRAZY FROGS completing 58 laps.
Spectators standing in front of the Magna Mazda podium were sprayed with Champagne as the celebrations took place. TV crews captured the moment with banks of media cameras close by.

Maybe Mr Southampton could have walked or not used his car that day - now that would be truly green.
